LOVE the discipline in continuing through the session irregardless of his restlessness. Too often people give up and teach that the bad behavior gets them what they want, out of the situation.

This video was a superb demonstration of how to teach a puppy not to bite as well as how to calm a puppy, and, incidentally, by way of clipping his nails. Pups find it scary to be on their backs because that puts them in a vulnerable position. As you say, a dog’s willingness to be OK with this kind of handling makes for easier vet visits and, in the case of my long-haired Australian Labradoodle, easier for the groomer. I also liked how you only praised Thunder AFTER he showed the correct behavior. Wonderful video with so may teaching points.

I looked up this video with my 9 week GSP pup just after a nice long exercise. Sleepy pup laid on his back in a daze, watched me trim and file, ate the treat then back to sleep. Hopefully….HOPEFULLY….Thats the trend 😅 Thank you for these awesome videos! Ordering the easy lead and some more from your site 😊

This helps so much. I've raised several large breed puppies, and all are now great with their nail trims as adult dogs. However, our newest border collie pup (from cattle working lines) is NOT going the same way. He is incredibly bold and stubborn. I am glad I know to stop the "syrupy" talk and how to address his biting and flailing now. I haven't seen it at this level before. Thanks!

This is fantastic! So many training videos the trainer uses pups who already are somewhat trained so when our own dogs don’t follow exactly, we don’t know how to react. This is so helpful. Thank you!

Finding this video made my day! I was able to trim my puppy’s nails the first time with some struggling on his part, but thought it went pretty well for my first time. Dremel came the next day, and he basically looks like Thunder in this video when I tried to use it yesterday. I see I made several mistakes that I can correct and get us back on track. Love the info on bite inhibition training as I have that going on too! Thanks for the great video!

Great information about starting young and being persistent. One of my gsp, a 3 yo girl i got as a Rehome situation. Her nails where very long and after doing her nails once i realized why.... haha... actually I like my grooming table, and loop for this... or a collar and a deck rail. More control, less drama.

My lab reacts the same way as thunder every time I clip his nails. I sat with him for 2 hours screaming. Each toe screaming louder. Thank you for the tip to not console him during the struggle. We started at 8 weeks old when I brought him home and was great with the first 3 trims. Then he decided no more mr. Nice puppy.

I have fostered puppies the last two years and i do the same thing; get them used to be held still. After a couple of sessions they usually calm way down when they get used to it and make it easier for their future owners.

How come the bite training is not more forceful? Holding his muzzle with a “No”? Is that too much for 8-9 weeks?

This is a good video that I wish I had seen a year ago. Unfortunately my Brit is now 14 months old and clipping her nails is like wrestling a bobcat! She doesn't bite but at nearly 40 pounds, it's a serious effort to get her pinned down enough so that I can actually clip nails. She's so squirmy that my wife can't (or won't) help. Do you have any suggestions to make this easier for a nearly full grown dog? Ray

Ray Thiel again. I was able to clip the nails on her front feet today! I sat her on a dinning room chair and it seemed like she couldn't get the same leverage she had on the floor. After the first foot was done, the second one went smoothly with only a little squirming. My wife distracted her by giving her a piece of her dog food after each nail. This may not be a universal solution, but so far so good. I'm not sure how to do the rear legs yet.

Hi i have a question about training with a British lab she is about 7 or 8 months old i am working on, e collar conditioning which i have done before with other dogs, but for some reason when she sees the remote for the collar during training she gets scared/nervous about it and she dose not want to come near me. But when she cant see me using it or dose not know i have it she is fine. What do you think i should do??
@petrishalee2315
@petrishalee2315 4 года назад
Hi! It sounds like she had a negative experience with the e collar and is now fearful. Your dog could also be gong through a fear period which is totally normal. I would suggest not using the e collar for the time being but rather conditioning your puppy to it. Hold the e collar and treat. Sit near the e collar and treat. Then work up to having the e collar on the neck and treat. Keep these sessions short and end on a good note, progress takes time. Especially with something that puppy has developed a fear for. Keep treating and using positive reinforcement with the e collar for at least a few weeks after the puppy is comfortable with it on. After that, you can use the e collar at low settings for a while then work up to normal levels. This will take time but you guys will get though it. Hope this helps!

I have a 2 lb puppy that is super wiggly as and so small I can barely find his tiny nails in the hair. How long do you actually wait holding him down before giving him a break If you are just trying to start by getting him to lay calm on his back?
@StandingStoneKennels
@StandingStoneKennels Год назад
If he is that squirmy, you should just get him calm on his back first. Repeat as you are conditioning him to be calm. Then re-introduce the clippers.

Does he ever freak out when the nail clippers come out? Do they associate the nail trimmers with that position and protest?

Good grief, after about 15 minutes it's probably time for a break. It doesn't ever take 15 minutes to trim their nails so why hold him there for longer than that? You talk about puppies having short attention spans and the window of time that's good for nail trimming sessions is not long but then sit there and talk and make it last forever
