Really enjoyed this, I get a pup in about 10 weeks and look forward to practicing what I'm leaning from your videos. Couple of questions, I heard that you leave the pup in its crate when you go to work. How long can you leave them without them getting distressed. Can you leave an adult dog in a crate when it's not with you, or should it be kept in a bigger kennel where it can run around. Thanks

If you haven't already gotten passed that maybe for next time, they say the pup can hold itself for 1 hours every month its is old, now mentally the separation issue depends on the dog.

We have been doing this with our Pudelpointer. When she’s looking for social attention (versus treats) she tends to escalate and growl/bite/nip. It’s super easy to ignore simple jumping or paws on the counter, but much more difficult to ignore the biting. We’ve been removing ourselves from her and she calms down quickly, but then many times starts back up again after a few minutes. Tends to happen more when we’re trying to do a task (like putting away groceries) and as a result it takes much longer due to having to remove ourselves from her multiple times. Do you have any suggestions to manage this?

Hey y'all! I know this is an older video, but would you be able to tell me who makes that toy, where you purchased it, etc? That looks awesome and my puppy needs a fun toy that doesn't squeak. He is a 15 week old labrador retriever that will be used for duck hunting in the future.

Hm our gsp pup is sometimes running and just running against something with her head. And often he climbs through the chair (the wooden sticks at the feet of the chair) instead of going around it. Is that normal? She is currrently 10 weeks old

I just picked up a GSP and have been watching some of your videos. I’m using clicker and was curious what is the best treat to use while training? Should I just use her dog food? Or treats? Im working on a few different things in small sessions each day but don’t wanna over feed her or upset her stomach to cause accidents while also potty training her since she is only 9 weeks old

We typically recommend just using your pups meal for their training session. If this isn’t enough to keep their focus, we have found Train Me treats are a great option as well!

For puppies, it's great to never ever feed them a free meal. Use their kibble as training treats. You end up building the value of their kibble, as well.

Is this something that you only work on during a training session, or throughout the day whenever the dog is in the kitchen? Our GSP spends a lot of time in the kitchen, because we don't want her on carpets until fully potty trained (she has an excitable bladder). We don't want to overwhelm her with training, but also want to develop good behavior for when she is an adult. Any advice you might have would be appreciated! Love the videos-thank you!

Elliot Graham thanks for the question. We can shoot a video, but I will tell you exercise and relative location of the crate can make a huge difference!

How do you work on proper training for a adult dog?
@happytrails5342
@happytrails5342 3 года назад
Same as a pup, but they may be more stubborn, I recommend using a command collar, As I said to someone else, and I recommend this over treats, ------------------------------------------------------------- If you don't want to use treats, then use a "command collar" its a plastic non aggressive pinch colar designed to mimic the mothers pinch. This is a much better way of training as your dog learns to respect you with no loss of love. With treats, if the value to the dog of the temptation or behavior outweighs a treat, or what It thinks the treat is worth, you will lose control of your dog. Not saying its not feasible to have a fully trained and obedient dog based on treats, but their is a difference you will see in the training. Your dog will look to you for direction rather then your hand for a treat, good luck and happy new year! Go through basic commands popping the collar upwards with increasing force until the command is met. Now don't get carried away, if the dog doesn't understand what you want, then it is just a useless punishment of sorts. Show the dog what you want atleast 10 times, then start correcting. For more information search of Don Suluvan the dogfather training. You can buy the DVDs and collar on Amazon but its basic knowledge and doesn't not really need the price tag it has. But the collar is extremely worthwhile. Here is one made by a more reliable brand then the knockoffs available. www.amazon.com/dp/B000A6BD5K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_imm_t1_WND.FbYNNB66D They work incredibly well and quick, my 10 and a half week old white lab has gotten the basics Sit, stay , off, leave it, go to your bed, and this way, not perfect by any means but absolutely not treats have been used besides peanut butter and a few treating her speciation issue. Its important you reward him/her with praise and have play sessions in between training sessions. It works incredibly easily and your dog respects you and loves you rather then expecting treats.

I'm wondering if giving her rewards while she's looking at your while you're eating might encourage begging? How do you make sure that she does not learn to beg for food as she gets older?

Hmm, lol you could type all that but simple question hahaha, I would think it would encourage begging as the dog is simultaneously learning that it can get treats by being close to you and quiet. I would think the better approach would be to have the dog lay in a bed or stay somewhere else. Maybe a crate, then reward that. Although I personally am completely training my white lab without treats.

My Gsp is 12 weeks old and we haven’t let her walk around the house freely yet. She tends to run around the house looking for things to get into or try to play with the cats 😂. So usually if I have something to do around the house like cooking or cleaning, she is put in her crate. Is this normal at 12 weeks? What would be a good first step to letting her walk around the house?
@StandingStoneKennels
@StandingStoneKennels 5 лет назад
Ashley Robertson we would keep it to fairly controlled sessions! Making sure you have the ability to stay focused on your puppy while they are playing around!

I may have missed your reason for not wanting them to have a squeaker in their toy.
@StandingStoneKennels
@StandingStoneKennels 5 лет назад
Ricky Bonnett this is only for future bird dogs. Birds can squeak when a dog grabs them. If they are use to munching on a squeaky toy this can develop a hard mouth.
