How To STOP/Reduce Single Strand Knots on Natural Hair

Adora Howell me too.. I've done everything and I still get single strand knots and my hair sheds a lot .. I'm about to give up .. it's just to much ..

Are you keeping your stretched always? She's right. That helps tremendously. I had no idea what single strand knots were until I became natural. When I was relaxed I never had any because of course the hair remained straight aka stretched. We get SSKs because the strand curls on itself. That doesn't happen with straight hair. So keeping it stretched as much as possible is going to be the best way to fight SSKs.

I use to have a lot of single strand knots, until I started washing my hair in twist. Before I wash my hair I completely detangle my hair using a warm water mixture of olive oil and aloe vera to encourage my strands to relax. I place my hair under a shower cap as I go to prevent it from drying out. I also use a deep conditioner ever other week and a protein treatment the week I'm not deep conditioning. After finishing my wash I make sure to ad a heavy butter to my ends, and then use hair pens not bobbie pens and stretch my hair around my head to further reduce shrinkage. Normally the two strand twist I put in my hair I usually wear for about 4 days. Every night before bed I lightly mist my hair with water, aloe vera , and jojoba oil. I then squeeze my twist gently to ensure penetration of my of the moisture and wrap my hair again. I am a 4C so maintaining moisture and keeping it stretched has been a life saver.

Adora Howell I have tried everything myself, and nothing helps and yes I trim too even though cut is more like it so I have made peace with my knots, I think the texture some natural have is a heaven for knots, my daughters do not have my problem with knots

Same. My thick 4c hair is riddled with SSN's and nothing will change it. I've tried everything but it's no use.

I literally have the same problem and I've found that wearing 2 strand twists (no extensions) have helped a lot because your hair is always stretched somewhat so matting is almost impossible

Moisturize your hair and twist it up like the other ladies suggested. But here it comes 😏 after you take down your twists try banding your hair immediately in 2 sections, or more depending on your length. I band my hair in two sections every night before bed using 3 or 4 hair ties. I make sure to leave the same amount of space between the hair ties so that it doesn't completely change/stretch the curl pattern. When I wake up I take the hair down and it remains stretched (unless it's ridiculously humid outside)

Bantu Knots work well too just dont make them too small because they will be super curly unless you are going for that look
