I noticed most people with very kinky type 4 hair normally have long hair from wearing their hair in stretched styles all the time! I noticed that with you, Naptural, and many other type 4 hair RU-vidrs.
Yes, indeed... I vowed around 2 years ago to never ever wash my hair freely again!!! I make 8 fat twists, take 1 apart wash that section and retwist. The same steps for conditioning/detangling! It made my life soooooooooo much easier, because I'm no longer overwhelmingly exhausted anymore by "simply" washing my hair!
Omg, what?? I cringe when I take a leap and go to a natural salon. I literally feel them creating tangles as they wash it freely then roughly detangle 😣. I can't imagine washing my hair freely EVER!
I've been growing my hair for over 6 years. I get a lot of single strand knots which cause further knotting and mass tangles. Thanks for the hair care tips!
Thank you for being so quick. I would've still been listening to the intro of another RU-vidr in the time it took to finish your video. I'll try using oils before washing. My hair doesn't like oils very much but I'll give it a shot because no matter how much they get trimmed, I get a lot of knots in the same week
In the recent past I have struggled with single knots also because my hair is very coily but I noticed if my hair has is moisturized with water when it feels dry that helps a lot.. I cleanse my hair weekly. Doing that lessens the knots also. If you leave styling products in your hair too long time & you don't wash them out on a regular basis then your hair could be drying out which causes knots. Just remember, oil is not moisture water is moisture.
You are one of my "healthy hair" role models. Your videos are simple, professional and catchy. Thank you for continuing to share knowledge with us; it's invaluable.
+Alta Jacob One product line that has worked wonders in helping me prevent and eliminate the dreaded "ssk" is "Camille Rose. My hair is 4c texture and prior to using this line it would soak up moisture rapidly. A hairdresser recommended the moisture milk and butter and it is great for twisting and wash & go and an all around moisturizer God-send (better than anything else I've tried).
I loved the shrunk look after my wash and go but after suffering terrible triple strand knots throughout my hair this weekend post vacation, I am done. I am sold with just sticking to the stretched look. it is way better than 6 hours of matted horror. Thank you for these tips!!!
I started getting knots when my hair grew long enough to bun... Now I know it's not the bun itself, I just leave my ends to do their thing. And my hair's curling game is strong! Now I know better. Thank you. :)
you are soo informative. I cant believe I had not subscribed earlier. you have very good perspectives. I am struggling with ssk right now. I was thinking I need to stop using these natural hair products because I didn't have this problem prior. Anyhow, I think I should plait my hair in the shower to help. it takes me forever to braid once I am out and the top already starts to dry. thanks for the tips.
I found that with my hair (combo between 3c and 4a) that once my hair got longer the knots were not forming as much as when my hair was shorter (5inches or so). I deranged my hair more often when it was shorter and I attribute my horrible deranging techniques to the problem as well. the shorter my hair is, the more likely I am to start at the ends and move up the hair more quickly because it's short. the longer it is (12 inches or more) it's easier to keep in loose buns without pulling my hair so tightly and the styles keep longer leading to less manipulation. that is my experience with single strand knots. I also found that the more I rushed through detanging (hair not as damp as it should be or hair completely dry) that is when I tend to develop knots further up the hair well past the ends. The ends is where the knots would appear when it was shorter and if I rushed detanging longer hair they would begin appearing further up the shaft, if that makes sense. I like your videos, thanks!
ayamejoy i have a twa about 4 inches or so and i get these damn know no matter what i do. I can't section my hair doesn't have enough length for all that. But literally i have ATLEAST 16 knots a day I haVe to cut out... no exaggeration. And i don't do wash and go's either. I put some water and conditioner in it but that's it really.
Thank you for your comment...its all making sense to me now. I recently cut my hair and BOOM uncontrollable fairy knots everywhere!! I don't remember having this problem when my hair was longer
Girl you have spoken the real truth. I tell people everytime, that the longer the hair, the less manipulation needed and knotting. They don't believe me. My hair is becoming easier to manage and has less knots, the longer it grows and I'm glad it's at that stage. Patience when detangling is key! You cannot rush the process if long hair is a goal. Thank you for such a great comment!
Girl I wash my hair in twist, condition them in twist, then untwist, de tangle, loc in the moisture and then double strand twist it right back up. My hair stays in these twist (that are moisturized daily) under a wig for two weeks and the process is repeated. Why I got these knots?? 💁🏾♀️
BeautiFuFu - Honestly, some of us are just going to get single strand knots no matter how well we care for our hair. I know videos like this mean well, but they sometimes give people the impression that they must be doing something wrong if they aren't able to eliminate their single strand knots. I've been natural for over 20 years, and the only time I never had to deal with single strand knots was when I kept my hair cut very short (so the strands were too short to get tangled). Other than that, I've always had them. Keeping the hair well moisturized and stretched certainly does help to minimize the number of single strand knots, but I've yet to find a way to eliminate them completely.
This video was extremely helpful, concise and very much to the point. Exactly all of the ingredients of what the best videos are made of. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!! 🤗🤗🤗
literally my whole head on the ends r in single strand knots. If I follow ur steps can my hair get rid of the knots or does this mean I have to cut all of my hair off? the single strand knots r literally everywhere!!!
Isabella Martinez Try dusting ur ends. I have learned that if every so often have to dust ends to get rid of ssk because they tangle and cause breakage. When detangle knots wet knot or oil and separate strands pulling DOWN NOT APART. ONLY DUST ABOVE knot. I am also trying out Bantu knoting my ends to protect. Hope this helps.
+827honey1 Another testimonial for pre-pooing! I'm so glad I found out about that - completely transformed wash day! If you try any of the other tips out, let me know how they go!
Coconut oil check Conditioner check Shampoo check Now I just need to aquire that silk scarf to make my starterkit complete. Thank you Asha for the inspiration and saving my hair! :)
This is very interesting for as it is such a contrast to what I know. I barely ever straighten, or rather, stretch my hair in any way (blow drying, twists or braids) i swim often and am fond of low maintenance :), so these techniques have always been more headache than lifesaver. I find that the knots/breakage come in when going from stretched to curled up hair on wetting and this is never a problem when I leave my head alone. Its definitely not the first choice for most naturals out there but just wondered if anyone other 'non-stretchers' noticed this?
Naturally High Thanks a million. I have been washing my hair in twists. This has made a huge difference. Also oil rinsing makes my hair so much softer. Super!
It's one you wouldn't expect! It's a protective style and you're ends are moisturised... What could go wrong!? Let me know how/whether it changes anything!
My issue is I do Conrow for my wigs. I take out the Conrows, then comb, then wash shampoo and deep conditioning. When it’s time to blow dry and comb is my biggest stress with my hair so difficult to comb with knots.
Thank you for this beautiful video naturally high! I’ve been wondering about the single stran twist as well. I would try washing and conditioning my hair in braids on my next wash day. The others, i think i have those down. Thanks again!
i tried all of these and i still have knots all over. I dont even wear my hair out, its always in braids. I even wash them in braids. going to do mini-braids tomorrow and give myself a small trim if its needed. its odd, but fascinating seeing a single knot on your hair.
+sassenav12 trust me, they used to bother me as well. Now I rarely get them! The overarching message is just to plait or twist your ends if they're damp or wet. I'm confident you'll notice an improvement from doing this. Sealing in the moisture helps as well! Wishing you the best!
I’m so not happy with my natural hair today. Last night I flat iron for the first time in almost a year. My hair was on my waist about an inch from my hips (I have a long torso) anyway; I had to cut my ends of course, but after inspecting them they still had so many knots. It took me so long to search and cut as many as I could. It’s the morning after and I still can feel them, some are up too high on my strands. All because I was wearing wash and goes for a few weeks straight. Can we just enjoy our hair without the annoying single strand knots?! I want to keep it long, but end up having to cut too much every year... I just can.🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️
Thanks I'll try those tips. I have single and double knots and it makes me sad because it breaks my length. So I remain the same length at some part of my hair.
+Patricia Suivant I know the feeling! I'm confident you'll notice an improvement from these tips. I see so many naturals wetting their loose hair and tucking it into buns - something I could NEVER do. Since I stopped doing that and leaving my hair wet and loose in general, I've noticed a HUGE improvement in their condition. Don't despair, I'm sure your situation will improve. Be sure to only use sharp scissors to cut the knots off - breaking them off causes split ends.
Oh wow, I started the Curly Girl Method in February and wash n go’s. I’ve been cutting out lots of knots. I wet my hair daily and put conditioner on it.
Thank you. So helpful. I gotta lazy and been wearing a bond for the last few months wetting and oiling and sleep and when I picked it out fuzz ball be everywhere. It was crazy. I'm going to braid my hair today.
Thank u for this video! I always thought moisture was supposed to help prevent them but this made a lot of sense. now I just need to try different styles!!!
Hi doll! Really great video, priceless info! I know when my hair was longer I pretty much did all these things so that I never experienced single strand knots. Glad u did a video to help others understand how and why they form! I have some exciting news for u too! I'll inbox you!
+Jiselle Lamont Great minds eh? ;) Thanks for taking the time to comment!! Did you spot your HEAVENLY leave-in at 1:00? Luckily I stocked up last time I was in Trinidad so I'll be good until June. I'm also ecstatic to hear about the good news! You absolutely deserve it!

I use all the methods you mentioned except one... But braiding hair even when it's in a bun or style? That was so simple, I cant believe I hadn't thought of it before. Genius!! Thanks for the tips
You should also use a satin or silk pillowcase or head scarf. Cotton is very dangerous for naturally curly hair because if the friction caused by tossing around in our sleep. So please ladies/gents, invest in a satin/silk pillowcase or hair scarf(anything that an protect your hair).
I have type 3a/b hair, I get single strand knots a lot on the bits of my hair that are at my temples, these two locks of hair seem too be 3b moving on too 3c and always feel much drier than the rest of my hair, and always have single strand knots, but I can't do a braid out just at my temples and my hair is too short too do a full head braid out as the back is only a couple inches long, I have a bob
i hate SSKs sighhh... at your into i was tiking off the checkboxes..idk i hate being afflicted by them, but i will try your methods and see if they work :D
+MyCrownOfCurls I'm sure the techniques will help. I also suggest sleeping in a satin scarf, moisturising regularly, and essentially NEVER leaving your hair loose and wet!
I have 2c-3a hair and I just learned about fairy knots after googling why tf I have such small knots in my hair!!!! Thanks for making this super informative video!!!
In addition, I comb my hair once a month on wash day. I tried finger detangling, but unfortunately my fine 4c strands don't stand up against knots. So I've given up and decided to go back to combing with medium comb on wash day before twisting. I noticed it keeps 95% of those lovely knots away. Notice I use a medium comb; small comb makes my hair more fragile and large comb does nothing. I think if I keep my hair twisted or braided (as oppsed to twist outs or braid outs) I may be able to switch to large tooth comb. We'll see what happens on this journey :-)
+Naturally High extremely Sad to say it's breakage. I just realize I'm experiencing protein overload due to over usage of my homemade henna infused coconut oil :-(
How old are the twists? Do you mean as a hairstyle? I always section these twists, pre-poo and plait them before I wash because they tend to get matted, especially if I shampoo them.
+SimpleeMelz nah! I'd have to loosen those, detangle and re-twist them and THEN shampoo. The bulk of my detangling is done before I cleanse. Adding shampoo to old twists makes them mat (in my personal experience). How does it work out for you?
+Nelly B. Glad you found it interesting. Thanks for your feedback! When I realised that moisturising my strands was the culprit, I was very surprised! I actually stopped moisturising for a while. Back then a lot of the RU-vidrs I followed would wet their ends and tuck them straight into a bun! That's a practice that always leads to knots for me. But luckily, there's no reason to sacrifice moisturising! :D
Sooooo great video! Im definately struggling with ssk. However, I just chopped my processed hair off today & when I do twists or plaits, my hair doesn't go all the way to the bottom; it just remains a puff at the end. Therefore stretching my hair doesn't do anything for my ends. what else can I do if twists or plants are a no go?
I think I'm just going to relax my hair.... Every solution tells me I need to "stretch" my hair. Stretching my hair is just temporarily straightening it without heat and requires a lot more time and effort. So why not just relax it?
Terena Rosa do what you think is best. There are lots of relaxed youtubers with healthy hair. There are two main things to consider: 1) do you prefer the look of straight hair? If so, this is an easy decision. 2) Are you willing to put in extra work to ensure your hair thrives despite the damaging effects of relaxer? There are all kinds of things you can do with relaxed hair and in many ways, it is more manageable. It all boils down to your own preference. Good luck, no matter what you do!
I have a question I have a good amount of single strand knots are they necessarily damage because my hair is still manageable and is very healthy and strong I plan on growing my hair out to my goal and get a 3 inch trim when I get their and just snip a few now and then until then so are single strand knots really damage
Thank you Naturally High! Yes this is very new to me. Makes so much sense! We I was younger my ponytails were always comed out to the ends braided or twisted. So that explains why I never had this issue with long hair as a child. It was very hard to get an answer for this question even from 'professionals' in hair care. Love your naturally channel! Blessings*
Hey Asha. Which protective styles aid in preventing breakage and retain more length and thickness from your experiences? Or which protective hairstyle did you wear most often? Especially when you were still mid back length.
I used to wear my hair in small twists, plait the ends and tuck them into a bun. This was helpful in that my hair was never too knotty as it was rarely loose. Hope this helps!
I do all of this and I still get them, but i try not to let it bother me too much. I try to eliminate as much as I can, but if all else fails, snip snip they go!
+Windgoddess78 yeah you'd have to be extremely strict to eliminate them all. Basically keeping you ends braided, tucked away and moisturised 100% of the time! Friction against clothing also causes them! It's okay to have a few but if they're hindering your length retention then you may want to be stricter. Peace and love! Asha
Plaits or braids won't stay in my hair once it's wet so I use some acrylic yarn to bind my hair in two strand twists (kinda like threading) before the wash and leave it on until my hair is 70% dry then I take it out and finger detangle. I avoid so much breakage this way.
I'm kind of a mix of 4a-c. Yes, it can dry out your hair, so that's why I only use this to keep things neat while washing my hair. After I do a bit of a turban with a cotton tee, I just hang out with cotton soaking up the extra water. By the time I add product to style my hair is just wet enough to keep it's moisture once sealed. Hope that helps!
+Sugarkikkis Okay see this is why the hair-typing system is so limited. I don't believe that kinky hair that won't hold a plait fits in any of those categories. We must invent our own system to include the nuances within kinky hair types.
Great tips, but... I wash my hair in sections but unravel each section when I apply shampoo then I rinse the section loose. No problem so far my hair is stretched by water. But as soon as I apply my deep conditioner my ends shrink like crazy and tone of single strand knots get created. I tried several masks and same result. Same thing when it is time to apply my leave-in so I now skip that step. I am scared to wash my hair now. Anyone having this issue? Any tips? Thanks!
+HereDianna I get that a bit, but with shampoo! This is why I'm looking to change to clay. This is my current full wash day routine: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PYVqWJDJWzw.html&lc=z13ljbqbtk3hj5sqv04cjx1rtniyuf4qjqs0k Maybe something here might help! I think loosening the sections while shampooing could be the major source of your knots. Check it out! x
My mom won't buy me scissors. I have single strand knots and split ends i have to end up tearing them out because she refuses to get me scissors. What do i do?
