How to stop rocking your child to sleep

*If you want to.
In this masterclass, I share the gentlest way to begin working on getting less involved when you are rocking, or bouncing your child to sleep.
You can get started on this at any age, but honestly, I wouldn't consider starting this until your child is past 12 weeks of age. Often infants need the extra help to get to sleep, it's normal and not anything that needs changing.

You may find the latest masterclass I posted helpful. There may be a timing issue if you're spending so long rocking.

Thanks for sharing your method! The goal is to get baby in bed sooner each time. When do you stop adding the 30 seconds from the rocking step to the holding step? And what happens if your baby wakes up when you're laying them down in the crib? Do you start the process again?

Agreed. What happens if baby starts to wake up again ? Or if the baby didn't doze off when we reduce the rocking. .

Hi, would love your advice on this please! My son is 18 months old and we are still bouncing him to sleep (on a gym ball!) he has never fallen asleep still and has always needed motion. We’ve tried before for a long period of time and it has been unsuccessful. I believe timings are right and we have a good routine and he sleeps through the night. Sometimes he does wake in the night but will roll over and go back to sleep. So I know this is possible. However he just won’t drop off to sleep at nap or bedtime no matter how tired. His bedroom is blacked out with white noise and bedtime doesn’t really take too long most of the time, longer for my husband than me. Anyway, we bounce him until he falls asleep, but we can put him down straight away. So from your video, we don’t need to bounce when he’s asleep or stay still etc. to work to reduce the timings. Also, a lot of the time, as soon as he falls asleep, he kind of twitches his body to signal that he wants to be put down. I hope that makes sense! So if we don’t bounce him, he doesn’t sleep, so we bounce but as soon as he’s asleep we can just put him down. So I don’t know how to stop the bouncing 😭 as much as I love the cuddles, he’s getting very heavy to do this now. He isn’t talking yet and understands lots but I don’t feel that he would understand me explaining to him what he needs to do. Please help! Desperate mama trying to save her arms and back haha 😂 wish I seen this video sooner!

did you figure anything out? i thought my nephew would stop needing to be rocked to sleep by now but thats the only way he can fall asleep and it makes it so exhausting because he wakes up times during the night and needs to be rocked by to sleep again.

I’m going to try this. My daughters 7 month turning 8 in just a week and she’s now waking up about 1.5-2 hrs every night. She’s nursing, she’s teething as well. Could this be why? I don’t know. But I want to get a good night rest and I’m slowly losing my patience...

Reducing the feeds during the night may help if she is relying on the feed to get back to sleep. Chances are 7/8 months old she will need to have a feed during the night.

Did you try this and how did you get on? Our baby is 6 months teething and waking the same as yours during the night.

What happened !!!!

@@catt698 I now have another currently 10 month old. What I’ve learned is that the worse thing I could do is put them to sleep while feeding them bc then I become the human pacifier. That not only creates soothing to sleep but also now they want to sleep with you. So it’s so sweet yes and adorable but for me eventually started to get exhausting. You don’t sleep well bc your scared you’ll squish them or your partner will, every time they move they’re looking for you to suck on. So I started to feed my son then read him a story then later turn the lights down and rock him and try to put him down. Took a few times but now it’s getting easier to put him and leave the room. As for my daughter when I first wrote this comment I had to put her to sleep for hours at bedtime until about 18 months and would occasionally wake up at night. Allowing them to sleep alone is much better for you to get better rest and serve your kids in a better state of mind.
