We're stuck indoors for at least a few weeks.
If we're healthy enough to be bored, we've got an opportunity: get a head start on the drums.
This week's video is "how to stop sounding like a beginner", but that's a misnomer.
At every point up to the present, I could use the material in this video. After graduating from music school, when I was playing professionally, throughout my teaching arc. The basics never get less important.
But what are the basics?
Maybe it's stick control and coordination exercises. And if you've got years to inch your way up the skill ladder, those resources are great.
But what if we used the quarantine as a "forcing function"? What if we "parkinsoned" ourselves?
(Parkinson's law states that a task will swell in size and complexity to fill the time you allot to it.)
Short deadlines focus the mind. If you've got only 90 days to set fire to your "beginner" ships, and chart a new course, you now no longer have the luxury of focusing on the trivial many things. You have to choose the highest-leverage few.
I've been like a broken record about this, but I believe those few are playing clean (or kit control), feel (which includes time), and improvisation.
Those are the "necessary and sufficient" skills of "high level drummers".
They're necessary, because you don't find any greats without them.
They're sufficient because they're the only skills greats have in common.
(Try telling me Will Champion and Tony Royster play the same type of solo. Or that either of them isn't great.)
Great - so we focus on those 3 things. But how?
Well...video.
Please enjoy:)

In 40 years of playing in dozens of bands!! No one has EVER asked me to play more/busier!! No band member, engineer or producer!! No one has ever asked me to play a solo!! Plenty of engineers and producers have asked me to play less!! Dozens of times I've been asked to leave ghost notes out, even though I play them well!! If you want to get the gig as a drummer!! The drummer I'd aim to be as good as is.................Ringo Starr!! There is a very good reason why he is Gregg Bissonete's hero!! He is the epitome of "musical!!" drumming!! I really feel for new, younger drummers. Who get to watch all these perfectly eq'd drums, played by monster technical drummers on you tube and feel they have to be able to do the same!! They don't!! Just grab a few Beatles albums and play along!!

in my opinion, the beatles are not a good example of the drums. i have nothing against them, its just that they are so simple that if you stick to playing them, you wont know how to improve. I would just say keep practicing to any music you like!

@@PEP. Of course drummers should study all the greats, and aim to become as technically proficient as possible. Indeed some styles of music. Prog Rock, Jazz etc require extremely high levels of technique. My comment was mainly aimed at young/new drummers who I feel should get together with other musicians and make music as soon as possible and not feel they need to be some monster drummer to do so. I do get where you're coming from tho. Thanks for the comment.

I just read an interview in the last Tape Op with Patrick Carney where he said that when Dan Auerbach came over to record the first Black Keys record, the drummer didn't show up so Patrick just ended up playing the drums on it even though he wasn't even a drummer lol. Within a year they got picked up by Fat Possum Records and were touring professionally. Perfect example of someone who learned exactly what they needed to sound good (and quickly).

I love that you brought up this simple beat for beginners to work on getting tight and consistent 6:28. 30 years ago, when I was giving lessons, this was one of the first things I taught a new drummer. Then when they had that tight and consistent, I would bring in my band mates and we'd play Living After Midnight with them In the music store, and they would light up. One kid was 4 or 5 and I found out through his brother years later he stayed with music and picked up different instruments as well. It can't all be rudiments :)

One of the insights I picked up over the years of recording engineering was that getting great drum sounds in the studio isn't about what drums or mics or room or processing you use necessarily, although they are all important, it starts with the player and exactly the idea you call kit control. Producing good sounds on the instrument is inherent to the individual drummer and can't really be separated from their skill at keeping time or performing their role in the music.
