Picking? Squeezing? Fiddling with your acne?
Today I'll talk through my top tricks to manage that urge to interfere!!! The fact is that squeezing spots often causes far more pigmentation and scarring than the acne itself, so it's vital that you get this destructive habit under control.
We'll discuss these ways to get a handle on the habit:
1 - Your weapons
2 - How you percieve yourself
3 - Use makeup as a friend
4 - Distraction! Try checking out Dr Pimple Popper's RU-vidchannel

Dr pimple popper is a huge trigger for my acne excoriation. It makes me feel a huge anxiety about what's in my skin and I wind up going at my skin even when there isn't a zit to pop

I put on a face mask on my problem spots whenever I’m home not wearing makeup so that I don’t touch my skin . That and wearing makeup are the only times when I’m not tempted to touch my blemishes

I'm prone to picking at my acne, and wasn't really prepared to be moved by this video at all, but your point on throwing away the magnifying mirrors really grabbed my attention. Cheers to that! Here's to hoping I can kick my bad habit. 😊

I have a small magnifying mirror that helps me tweeze my eyebrows, but I invariably become distracted by any blackheads/spots and end up attacking them because of it! 😱

Thanks for this video. I'm suffering with a bad breakout along the jaw and cheeks, and washing my face does get emotional. It's interesting what you say about not taking makeup off as soon as you get home. I normally try to do this but then the temptation to look in the mirror is too great. Thanks Dr Sam!

Dr. P.P's show makes MY problems seem like a walk in the park! I like what you said about "confrontational distance." WHO is gonna get right up in your face and talk about your spots? Oh wait, I know an eight year old who would.

Hi! Quick suggestion. Can you please discuss the new trend in Vitamin C serums and tell us what is really necessary in our am routines.
@MzAnzu
@MzAnzu 7 лет назад
yes, and as you mentioned in your recent videos with Teresa Tarmey, that vit C could actually make active acne worse, if I understood correctly?

I don't think its new particularly..... been using them in practice for a decade....better formulation are becoming more affordable, its true. Antioxidants and SPF are the keys to good daycare.

Excellent advice Sam.... love your videos. Another strategy is tell those around me to tell me off if my hands go near my face! 2 years ago this majorly helped with jaw line acne... and they still point it out now! Harsh but it worked when I was my own worst enemy x

I came to the comments just to say that watching other people popping pimples would probably only make my own triggers worse. It would make me want to do it even more knowing that same type of spot is on my face and yet I cannot pop it. I think expressing the recommendation for watching this type of content should come with warnings.

Get a good skincare plan in place, and this will all get easier. It's a terrible place to get breakouts, men are fortunate to skip this pattern!

I really need help. I don't really have acne but if I have the slightest bump I will annihilate even if there's nothing but clear fluid and destroy the surrounding skin in the process. The juice ain't worth the squeeze and yet I still do it.

I used to be really bad at picking my acne especially when I was watching tv. Now, whenever I want to "check" on my spots (not too many anymore, luckily) I grab a little mirror I have on my living room table to "check" them. But I do agree with removing magnifying mirrors... I used to be very upset in the mornings when getting ready (with a magnifying mirror) because of my acne, thinking all people would see is the spots... but after (a long while) I realized that it's not all that bad in a non-magnifying mirror.

I don't understand the rationale behind not using powder. Some are problematic, some are not, just like with all makeup and skincare products. One of the least problematic are HD powders. They are one ingredient powders (silica). They shouldn't cause any problems and used minimally they blur and set makeup that doesn't set on its own, which is helpful for combination, oily skin, and concealer used in wrinkly areas. A good example of such. Powder is the NYX HD silica powder costing $10 at the drugstore/retail store. Long wear products also come in problematic and not problematic variants. You use waterproof mascara, your concealer is waterproof or it would fade away as soon as you perspire a little, and if your foundation is still on your face after a workday (8 hours) , it's water resistant. Personally I use a foundation labelled long wearing on a daily basis withouth problem (Loreal Pro matte), while the ones not labeled so have triggered breakouts (maybelline matte & poreless, Wet n Wild photofocus). Loreal Pro matte isn't as long wearing as Estee lauder double wear. That foundation looks freshly applied after 13+ hours which is incredible. That must mean it not only resists water, but oil as well, somehow. That one does give me problems if I use it regularly and if I don't remove it with makeup remover. Maybe the problem is extreme wear makeup with particular film formers. It would be nice if you investigated longwearing base makeup (concealer,foundation) to see what is problematic with extreme wear makeup. Vs long wear makeup, and vs wearing makeup that slips and slides and fades throughout the day.

Hi Dr Sam! I suffer from Trichotillomania which is a similar type of issue you were talking about in this video, only it's hair focused rather than skin focused. Any tips for that? Would love to see a video about recommendations for hair pullers, especially products that can help ease itchy scalps and can help repair/regrow hair. Thanks! x

My husband has these two spots on his jaw line and have been there for almost 6 months because he keeps picking at them. I tell him all the time to leave them alone but he doesn't listen to me; he doesn't even make sure his hands are clean. When they finally start to clear up, he will have a stressful work day and mess with them (absent-mindedly); by the time he comes early home they are red and inflamed again.

what do you recommend for these spots along the neck that just won't go away? Any particular products or skincare one should use to get rid of them if you shouldn't pop them? What are you thoughts on going to a facialist to have them removed? I have a neck full of them and would love to know why its happening and how to stop them. Thanks!

But they look so gross! I can't bear going out with obviously puss filled spots on my face, no matter how small! And they never stay covered with makeup! :-( Regarding powder, I use Laura Merciers transluscent powder to set my liquid foundation as I get an oily t-zone...is this not ok? Surely mineral powders are ok?
