I was on these for 20 years due to acid reflux and now got off them. I know bread, pastry and fizzy drinks would trigger reflux. To get off I changed to a diet based on Prof Spector's research on gut health. I eat a lot of salads and also yoghurt and fruit, nuts, fish, some lean meat. No sugar, v little carbs. Aim is to get my microbiome healthy and diverse. Took about 3 weeks to really start working. No reflux, losing weight gradually but don't feel as hungry anyway, more energy and drive. Another tip is to use ginger if you stray into foodstuffs that start to trigger reflux and also chamomile tea.
Thanks for this comment. It makes it easier for me to start this same thing. I've been on it for the same 20ish years and the acid reflux keeps me from sleeping. I hope I can be the same!
@@cissem4025 might be, but think not, as gluten free bread still gives me indigestion. As a footnote to my original post although I felt much better on the diet, the acid reflux didn't entirely go away. It seems to be linked to post nasal drip and irritation I'm my nose. Due to attend an ENT consultation.
The ENT confirmed reflux and added Gaviscon Advanced at night in addition to the omeprazole. I also went back to the Gastro guy who did a barium meal and ot showed I still had a small hiatus hernia. A lot has happened since my first post but not been able to stop omeprazole. Although I'm back to a low dose. I'm now concentrating on losing weight not just having a healthy diet. Need to lose at least 2 stone to take pressure off hiatus hernia. Have always been better when I had less weight.
My elderly mother was put on this for no reason we can ascertain (as she hasn't had acid reflux, etc) and she was on it for 6 years! 6 years! She has exhibited serious symptoms including pain in her back and joints, loss of all strength, vomiting, severe fever, and rigors. She has also been suffering with regular UTIs. She has been anemic too. I asked the doctor if she could come off it and could she come off straight away. I got a shrug and was told it'd be fine. So we took her off cold turkey. Thankfully, absolutely no problem. Then again, she never had any acid! Anyway, after 5 days, all her symptoms disappeared. So that's 2 ½ years of very bad quality of life thanks to the incompetents in the National Health Service. The NHS in the UK is frighteningly incompetent.
I am coming off slowly after being told I need to take it for the rest of my life. I have had all manner of issues since taking it. I was getting flare ups almost immediately after taking it every other day and as the clip stated take over the counter anti acid on days it was bad. 2 months on now on only two a week and nothing in between. Hopefully off completely in a couple of weeks and see how it goes. In the UK they seem to just give you everything and do not tell you of the long term effects
That's because there was no requirement to have strict budget control. What they should do is run preventative health checks each year (some do this) rather than purely reactive responses when something happens. The cost of those health checks generally far outway the cost of long term prescription drugs and / or the cost of treating those side effects you mention here.
I'm in the process of coming off these tablets and what struck me is I was put on them to coincide with an arthritis drug to protect my stomach. I've not taken those drugs in years yet am still on omeprazole? The NHS doesn't check in on its patients when it should because it can't. It doesn't have enough money or resources anymore to look after people properly.
I was prescribed PPIs (omeprazole) for over 30 years for acid refux, which has progressed to GERD anyway! I quit taking PPIs 4 years ago (at 58) after I was diagnosed with Osteoporosis (DEXA scores of -3.0 in hip, improved to -2.4 this year). In the spine, neck too. Shrunk 2 inches, 6'1" to 5'11" in height at my annual physical (that's what made my doctor suspicious in the first place, and immediately ordered the DEXA scan). The greatest irony is that I was in excellent shape; an avid runner (20+ miles a week) all my life, and in the gym 3x weekly. I had ZERO clue about the OP. My new doctor was also surprised. She told me to immediately stop running and lifting weights, and was amazed that my first symptom had not already been a collapse on some remote running trail, due to a catastrophic hip failure. Now I am really watching my diet and still trying to get on a meaningful, less intense exercise program to stimulate bone growth. Refuse to take anymore Prolia after 4 years of that (worries about possible side effects....of another med....again). And, am controlling and watching the GERD so I don't also develop esophageal cancer in the future. The above is probably way too much info, but it's my story. A healthy, active, life changed forever due to 1 prescription medication.
I have been on omeprazole for 40 years. I thought I had gerd now. Biopsy showed PPI Effect, that is the parietal cells grow and look like cobblestones. It causes gastritis which feels like gerd. I am discontinuing it today.
Thank you for the explanation. I am stuck on Nexium and every time I tried to stop my stomach would go into hyper acid production and just regular anti acids do not work in that moment. So thanks for the explanation of the other drugs that help with coming off of it. I am down now to Nexium every three days and it is manageable, so I can't wait to get off of it completely.
I been trying to avoid taking these meds that many doctors have been trying to get me to take. I did take one from an e/r visit and it gave me severe lower abdominal pain. Ive tried a lot of supplements and nothing has healed it. Im leaning towards surgery but still a bit nervous about doing so . Hearing others say they have been on ppis for years and cant get off was incentive for me to not start to begin with if all possible.
Sorry I will never stop using Omeprazole I use to have to take 4 boxes a month of baking soda I was dying of having to take it for acid reflex I have been taking Omeprazole for about 30 years and I can eat anything I want before I couldn't even drink water without getting acid So for that I will take it till I die sorry
Thank you so much for your service to others, others who've had our precious bodies abused by medication, often for many years, by overworked GPS . Or there is the other shady situation we don't wish to think of, is of our health care practitioners taking bribes and or worse, putting monetary incentives, over the care of the patients or their needs. I've seen the reps turn up at lunch time to smooze with the Doctor. The healthcare system needs a full transparency policy, to protect the vulnerable. Remember Doctors?, " First do no harm ". It's the solid oath you took , and I wonder how many are going to look after this period of time, and come to regret the choices they made at this time. 🤔 Ps I always ask the pharmacist before bothering the GPS xxx
Doctors are one small wheel in the cog. Go to the top of the chain - politics… lobbying… big pharma… It’s not all bad. Modern medicine is a marvel but when you introduce money to anything there’s always a potential for the well to get poisoned 🤢
I was instructed years ago to take as much of this as needed to prevent acid. I had been on two a day for years. Recently, I was able to drop to one by adding the supplement L-Glutamine, and then went off completely by replacing it with an all-natural antacid pill I found on Amazon. I was also (and still am) taking a Tums tablet most every night. Just the other day I went back on a single dose due to unusually high acid reflux issues, but after seeing this video I'm going to go back off them again.
Highly recommend looking into your food insensitivities & food allergies- as that might be the underlying cause of why your stomach is acting up. I worked with a naturopath for over a year and had great success.
I was on 40mg of omeprazole for 17 years. I tried to cut back to 20 but my acid reflux was pretty bad. It took a few weeks to get my body used to 20. I did 4o Monday, 40 Tuesday, 20 wed, 40 thu, 40 Friday , 20 sat, 40 sunday. THen it was 40,20 20 40 20 20 40, then 40 20 20 20 40 20 20 and now I'm on 20 with no problems, I am using same technique soon to move from 20 to 10 and then 10 to 5 and then come off if possible. I'm 39 and started to take them when I was 21
You can do it. Just take it very slowly! it took my like a month or two to go from 40mg to 20. I'm going to cruise on 20 for a while and then 15. Prilosec is a great drug. it's been around for 30 years. many people who come off completely tend to go back on at some point so as far as I'm concerned, if I can get to 10mg every other day to control symptoms, that's he goal
Luis I too am 39 and have been taking ppi's since I was 21 as well. About 3 years ago I tapered down and went off for 7 months. I suffered immensely every single day of that 7 months, it was unbearable. I finally couldn't take it any longer and went back on. It's been shown that most patients can cut their dose in half like you did, but coming off completely is another story. I tried going to new gastro drs. in hopes they could help, but they act like they can't understand why I would want to come off of them. It's insane. I don't know what to do and can't find anyone willing to help. Anyway, I really hope you have success getting off this stuff.
OMG, never tapered off PPI, and was lucky to not have experienced anything, just a bit of mild GERD, I did start the 8/16 fast for about a weeks & have now moved on to the 18/6 fast, I was only eating one meal per day anyway, but my downfall was years of munching chips and chocolates at night. I’m eating my main meal everyday bewteen 2 and 4, a good healthy substantial meal, then oatmeal and fruit for dessert, or one slice of Ezekiel toast with banana, cinnamon and a little honey. Two cups of decaf, morning with 1/2n 1/2, and late in the evening, just black decaf, or coffee, I’m never hungry, but I do get cravings to munch fir no reason,p, definitely a case if mind over matter.
@@PharmacistTips Hello i stumbled upon your channel trying to look for a specific answer but i believe you can probably answer my question. I was just prescribed omeprazole for gastritis which has made me unable to sleep or eat the past 24-48 hours. My doctor said it might not kick in until tomorrow so i was wondering if you can take omeprozole and zantac in the same day but at different times? tums work to reduce acid in my stomach but dont last long enough to sleep a good amount. any advice would help I commented on this video and not your PPI video in case if you would have a better chance at seeing it here. I'm on 40mg x 2 daily and have tried cutting down to 1 a day a few times since last summer, but I wind up with stomach pain and back on twice a day. Had an endoscopy last Oct. with some issue and was told to continue taking the meds. This time I'm trying to take 40mgs x 2 every other day and then just 1 pill in between. Been a month now and so far so good. Thinking I will try going 2 days with one pill and then two 40s on the third day and see if that works. Ever since this COVID happened nobody wants to do anything, including me. Video appt. next week with my doctor finally. Thanks for the tips although my problem doesn't seem to be acid indigestion/reflux. Or maybe I just present weird. Also I thought they pulled Ranitidine/Zantac?
Do you have a hiatal hernia? I was diagnosed with one, and I took 40mg but over time I reduced it to 20mg. Nowadays I'm only taking 10mg a day because I am extremely careful with what I eat and avoid any stress. A life with no stress is a life with no digestive issues.
Excellent video! direct and to the point. Pharmacist seemed liked he really wanted to help people and was not trying to sell something like every other video out there.
The following are amazing to help with symptoms and wean off PPIs: -Slippery elm powder -Marshmallow root tea -DGL tables -Pure aloe vera juice -Throat coat tea
Why dont doctors tell how long to take this medication? My ENT gave me this medication for acid reflux and it had 3 refills. So Ive been taking it for about 8 weeks and 3 days ago I started feeling weird. Migraines that wont go away with pain relievers, difficulty breathing, and heart palpitations especially at night to which I cant sleep.I would not have been on these meds if i knew you should only be on it for 4-8 weeks.
yeah i had signs of gastritis after an endoscopy but before my doctor even got the results back for the sample he sent off, he prescribed me protonix for a full year. I was like seriously? I'm one of the cases that very rarely has symptoms, so what the hell
@@geddoe316 yeah i was told i had IBS but may be i have celiacs docs said we have done all tests we can but despite going vegan for months having issues with my upper stomach, I was put on anti acids without having any symptoms myself and then stop the anti acids and then started having acid reflux all the time
I was prescribed Omeprazole 23 years ago and just left on it. At the time I drank and smoked but I have quit both, drinking 20 yrs ago and smoking 18 yrs ago. I want to come off them and I'm going to see my doctor. I'm in England. Thanks very much for a great video, and I wish you a very happy and healthy New Year.
I now take 1 tablespoon of organic apple cider vinegar in a glass of water immediately after my evening meal at 6 pm and then rinse my mouth with cold water due to possible long term acid erosion of my teeth and all acid reflux from 11.30 pm to 1 am has totally ceased.do not eat puddings or chocolate late evening .all works for me thankfully .
I found 20mg was to much really, wonderful when you are on it but really bad when you stop, I found 10mg per day was just as effective, and keep going for a few months to let things settle then reduce the dose to 5mg per day then 2.5mg per day, over a few weeks, you can do this easily by opening the 20mg capsule and pouring the contents which are small spherical balls evenly into empty clear gelatine capsules ie one 20mg capsule makes four 5mg or eight 2.5mg capsules, and when you stop taking any the acid stays away, should you feel a bit of acid returning just one or two 2.5mg for a couple of days should be all you need, it worked for me...
@@vananhnguyen6646 It takes a while, after my symptoms had gone which it did on 20mg a day I started taking 10mg a day for a few weeks and I was ok, so then went down to 5mg a day for a few weeks then started to miss a day, to be honest I would forgot to take them and my acid stayed away, occasionally it comes back a bit then I take 5mg for a day or so and it goes away again, but do avoid hot spicy food and fatty food, I'm about 90% clear of acid burn now just have to be careful what I eat.

Simon Davids I have been on these over 20 years too. I got on JOHN ROSE (you tube) for the Juiceing. The celery juice in the morn on an empty stomach has helped me. I got off the Omeprazole without telling the Dr. they never told me it was for a short time only they keep giving it. I read about side effects. Just try it and you will see it can heal you. Do not be a fool eating what hurts??? Change your crazy eating. We all do it. Just eat healthy and stay healthy.
OK. so I take 20mg capsules a day but want to try to get off it. Can I take the capsule apart and sprinkle some of the beads on applesauce and slowly decrease?
Fairly informative. Thank you. Quitting cold turkey after 14-day treatment for a severe ulcer that lasted nearly 9 weeks. Have had a lot of heartburn and a bit of gas in the first couple of days. Bismuth and peppermint seem to help a bit, but I may need to try of those H2 blockers.
Thanks for the kind replies. By the time I got to the doctor the ulcers had passed, but they were just part of a much larger problem. I was diagnosed with chronic pancreatitis, so my whole digestive system is out of whack. I have to take pancreatin with meals to be able to break down fats, in particular. I still have heartburn, but it's usually manageable with mints and antacid (calcium carbonate). I took ranitidine for some time, and it helped quite a bit. I think it's had some bad PR lately, though, and has been pulled from a lot of shelves.

I'm a retired Paramedic and after 30 years of high stress 2 failed marriages and consuming enough beer to float a battleship I ended up with several ulcers, gerd and was diagnosed with barretts esophagus disease last year and have been taking Omeprazole ever since. I really want to stop taking it, I started working out which I did off and on over the years to try and stay in shape and have maintained a weight of 180 lbs on a 5' 10" frame, my fear of reducing the Omeprazole is that the Barretts will get worse which could lead to cancer. My goal is to not take anything stay in shape reduce alcohol consumption and live a stress free life wish me luck and any further input would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
Tricky situation, Barretts is serious and may warrant continued use of omeprazole. All you work with diet and exercise should allow you to use a small dose or maybe even step down to an H2 blocker.
I been taking it on a low dose for many years due to a hiatus hernia and now I have Barrett’s which I only found out a year ago.Im obese and as I’m a woman in my 60s I worry about my bones and long term side effects of taking this drug.I already know I have polyps in my stomach. My doctor has never mentioned that I should stop taking it.
stress and anxiety is the one thing that multiplies my stomach acid. i have gastritis and ulcers & gerd all from stress & anti depressants. got it at 28 :'(
You need surgery mate, you probably have several issues going on at once. Part of life (our insides fail and get worn out too). I'm 38 and was on 40mg of somac for 6 years. I had surgery to solve my problem. I'm one of the few who don't have a hiatal hernia orrelated diaphragm issues, but I had a non functioning Les/Los, as in it wouldn't open and close normally, it would just stay wide open. Surgery was the only thing that resolved it for me and I'm off meds totally.
acid reflux has 5 main causes ..overweight putting pressure on the diaphragm and LES ..age related weakening of the LES ..hiatal hernia ..H Pylori infection causing gut imbalance ..bad diet of reflux triggering foods
Iv been taking Lansoprazole 30 mg per day for over 20 years (I’m now 64 male) because I was diagnosed with a hiatus hernia, Would love to stop taking them and get my stomach acid back to normal

Great video about Omeprazole, however a step further would be to have them check for food insensitivities or food allergies. And try to have them reduce intake of foods that their body doesn’t like. And reintroduce at a later date.

Problem with doctors in uk they will just keep telling patients to keep taking them as they won't understand why people want to come off them. A friend of mine has taken omeprazole for 35 years and now has knee arthritis, gallstones, severe pain in stomach and right across abdomen as soon as she takes a mouthful of food, now AFIB. She feels awful, generally unwell all the time but has tried coming off them with little success. Severe acid rebound even trying to do it gradually. She says it is a nightmare.
Have been taking it’s for years. On,y 20 mg once a day. Tried to wean off but found out I have a hiatal hernia, ulcers, and Barrett’s esophagitis (precancerous). Also had my gallbladder removed. So, no I’m stuck to stay on.. but I lift weights and take magnesium supplements and eat healthy
These tablets omeprazole are horrendous for the body long term. They were only designed to be taken short term like a month or so. Doctors have taken the easy way out and prescribed these to anyone with acid reflux without looking at causes. As usual just treating the symptoms. It is like if you have a water leak in your house just shutting the water off without treating the cause. I know someone who has been taking omeprazole for 35 years, they now have all sorts of problems, arthritis in knee which is severe as no fluid in knee, gallstones, fatty liver, and now AFIB. They experience severe pain when taking a mouthful of food and feel generally unwell all the time. I would advocate never taking these for more than 2 months. She wants to come off them but there is nowhere that advises how to wean off them safely. She has tried cutting down gradually but ends up with severe acid pain. These tablets are truly a nightmare.
I've been on omeprazole for 2 years and I ran out 3 days ago and have had a severe headache and insomnia for the past 2 days I have multiple sclerosis I'm gonna have to go buy it otc bc these headaches are insane
I was on omprezol for 40 years when my gi scoped me up and down and told me my guts from top to bottom were pulp loaded, I stoped taking all of them and started drinking 1 tablespoon of raw red Briggs vinegar instantly my gut was better. Plenty of videos on this. I haven’t suffered indigestion ever since I did it.
Totally fucked up after stopping such medications. Even after completely changing my life style, the withdrawal symptoms are a living hell. Worse are the episodes of head aches and dizziness. The whole medical profession seems to be screwed up. For a short term relief, you give us pain for a lifetime. Have stopped these PPIs for the past seven days and life is a freaking hell. But would not want to return to such a bad marriage. I am getting bouts of acid regurgitation, dizziness, severe headaches, nausea inspite of all lifestyle changes. The way your chest clamps up seems like you are experiencing an attack!! Have to cross at least four weeks for these side effects to subside.
How long does acid takes to work ?!! I started taking it this month 40 milligram morning and afternoon , looks like is not shutting Down my acid , acid getting worse !😭😭
When I try to get off omeprazole i can't eat. Everything i eat gives me acid reflux and I vomit. I'm going to try skipping a day or 2 or 3 in progression.
David Fullagar. Same problem here. My doctor’s advice: Expect to gain weight for 18 months...this will remain constant for another 6 months, after which you will once again have control. It was true and stopping smoking was the best thing I ever did...only wish I’d done it earlier .
Thx so much. My Dr asks me to confirm my meds every year and I’ve been on this over 7 yrs and my mom had a kidney transplant & I see I shouldn’t be on it at all! Thanks for this!
I was on 20mg for 15 years and previously tried to stop taking them but found the acid reflux too much. At the beginning of this year I went to my doctor who gave me a plan. Reduce 10mg for a month then stop taking them and instead, take Ranitidine 300mg once a day for a month then reduce to 150mg or Ranitidine for a month, then 75mg for 2 weeks then graviscon when needed. It’s been 6 months now and I don’t have any acid reflux. I do try to eat none acid forming foods but mostly just eat what I want.
I have been taking it for years and cant get off of it. I take 20mg. What if we can continue it to alternate days and meanwhile also take Multi Vit supplements to off set the side effects? Any ideas? Also got my b12 checked it was ok - how my vit D and Zinc levels were low. D is OK now but Zinc is still low and I am taking supplement for it. The other issue I have is anxiety which I think is related to BOTH: the use of Omeprazole; AND if I dont take it then due to acid and bile in stomach. Go figure 🤔
My doc refuses to take me off Omeprazole; I've taken it for about eight years. I've been trying to get him to get me off it. Recently, he proscribed Famotidine. Is this a better solution?
I was on omperazole for 6 years than tapered down in the wrong way. Not like this. I am suffering extremely bad for 2 months now. D R yes, but you have to cut out all processed food, it is refined food that is causing the problem to begin with. Apple cider vinegar is excellent, take with juice of an orange/lemon with a spoon of honey. Do not dilute any more than necessary.
Took Cider Apple Vinegar for Arthritis did not help with either the Arthritis or Acid Reflux. My doctor told me to stop taking it as it would make the reflux worse. I am now taking half the dose of Omeprazole with a view of coming off it completely.@@SciSciToys

For all those people who have stopped pantoprazole cold turkey ...lemme tell u my experience on successive days after I stopped pantoprazole- 1st day- almost no symptoms 2nd day- a bit of acid reflux ..took antacid twice 3 Rd day - omggg soooo baaad...had very painful acid reflux for nearly the entire day..took antacid four times 4 th day - again took antacid four times 5th day - took antacid three times and had quite a lot of reflux 6 th day- had reflux while eating breakfast in the morning then no reflux ...and now having reflux at night ..took antacid twice today and will take one before bed if symptoms are bad Guys talk to a gastroenterologist and try the tapering technique first I guess...I'll keep updating my symptoms so that if anyone is depressed do know that better times will come.
@@vananhnguyen6646 actually it didn't work for me . I shifted to two tablets of ranitidine for some days and now I'm on one tablet of ranitidine for a day . As long as I take one tablet of ranitidine before sleeping I have almost no symptoms. Have to slowly taper off ranitidine too 🥲
All my symptoms seem to say I have too low of stomach acid. I've been on 40mg daily for over 25 years. My digestive tract is totally messed up. I don't see a way out.
How did you rupture your diagphm . I hurt my diagphm on a foam roller n I've been on omeprazole 3 months . I want to get it off. How long were you on this n how did you stop it. Please lmk n also did you hear creeky noise in your chest from diagphm injury?
I had an allergic reaction to it. Bad headaches, facial swelling, heart racing and dizziness were the main ones. Most people respond well to it but I'm one of the few that doesn't.

I’m in a vicious cycle. I think I have heartburn because I’ve gained about 25 pounds so I’ve been prescribed antacids but these are bloating me and stopping me lose weight as easy because these tablets slows down your digestion! What do I do?
