That “I cannot live with myself any longer” really hit home for me. I love myself and I know I’m a good person, but it feels like there’s this other me in my brain constantly shitting on the me I present to the world. I have to consciously remind myself to be nice to me. Weird but ever too common

Me too , i can understand sis . This is a habit that ive had for a long time, but there is a way to reverse it through meditation and awareness.. just like any other bad habits we’ve ever developed ( alcoholism, drug addiction, junk food addiction etc) all takes time and discipline to break the habits. This feels really tough especially if you were mistreated growing up , its kind of like its engrained into your brain. Everytime that voice pops up , i disconnect myself from it, its not me, its not my thoughts , it’s literally a little demon voice :p haha. What I was getting at is, the less we react to the thoughts , the less power it has over us 🙏🏾 sending good vibes to you, we can do it 💜

Hmm not so much it the not being able to move forward.. Finding the right path. Fear of outcomes/other people's options.. Being secure. Some people just don't know or give a shit so the just put up with whatever life throws at them and just complain about it.. I see that a lot. I try to be a positive influence but its up to them to want to be a better person. To many people think the world ows them but really it's the other way round. All the best to you all xx

I don't agree. It all depends on what one's present consists of. Personally, I suffer from a chronic illness, which has led me to quit school, give up a career, give up the prospect of having a partner or a family, and live w/ a great deal of physical pain every day (I could elaborate further, but you get the gist). Prior to becoming ill, I was tremendously happy--living a meaningful life, learning, growing, connecting w/ others, etc. Now I'm completely isolated due to illness. So being in the present is for some of us, being w/ suffering. I can see how being in the present would be ideal if one merely had the everyday problems most people face, but for some, the present is tremendously painful and difficult beyond comprehension. (Sorry, I don't want to sound like a "downer," but rather convey that suffering and trauma are not always in the past or in a projected future, but regrettably in the present, the perpetual present.)

I too have this problem. I say "have" because it is there, but not always manifesting itself. I've learned to not grab hold of the negative thought when it comes about. It is a constant process of identification and action. I don't always succeed with letting go of the negative thought. On rare occasions, it seems, I allow myself to indulge in the bad self name-calling. Why? I don't know. Maybe as a pressure relief of sorts. I feel I will grow past this and not need it anymore. I sympathize with your struggle. It is worth the effort to get beyond it and be able to examine it for what it really is. Love...

Thank you Russell, as a 51 year old life long drink and coke user, I’ve finally realised I’ve got to stop now. My girlfriend of 4 years, who is very spiritual has been trying to get me to be more aware since we got together. She’s finally ended it and for a month I was drinking up to 15 pints a day, I hated myself. But I’ve been listening to Elkhart a lot and I googled how to stop the negative voices in your head. I’m gonna listen to all of the ones I’ve found on RU-vid. You’re the 4th so far and I really like the way you put it across. I started BJJ and I’m a white belt with 1 stripe, if it was for the 2 lockdowns and a couple of bad injuries I’m sure I’d have 2 or maybe even 3. I heard you made purple belt recently. When I hear/feel my negative voice, something that helps me, is to realise this harshness reminds me of my parents and it makes me feel compassionate towards them, because I don’t like to feel that must be how they talk to themselves too. Don’t know if that makes sense, but it helps me feel kinder to both my parents and me, when I perceive this.

I used to have recurring negative self-talk, often critiquing something I’d said or done. What helped me was asking 2 questions when they first begin: Is this useful? Can I be certain it’s true? Usually it was a no on both counts. It was then much easier to discount them and let them go.

Russell mentions Eckhart Tolle - I've been listening to his audiobooks lately, and one of the key things I've learned is to "observe the thinker", as he puts it. I have since noticed that it is more likely to be negative and whiny when the weather is bad or I am tired, but I have been telepathically talking back to it and telling it "Oh, thank you, that is very helpful", (LOL), and that it will feel better if we meditate or do some yoga, since that always calms it down and makes it feel better. It's just louder on bad days or in some situations, but "this too shall pass".

Mel Gibson is it? Perfect response, "oh ty ..." although strikes me as sarcastic. From what I understand the inner critic is not the enemy, but an immature response to the environment rooted in fear. It is easier to respond compasionately when you realize it is trying to self-protect, like a parent who panics and shouts at a child running into the street. With enough reassurance the inner critic can move out of emotional reactivity and become more grounded in reality.

You need to stop identifying with the thoughts completely. Watch the thoughts as they appear but be impartial and know they are not you and they are momentary. Thoughts auto generated. If you identify with them you will suffer.
@FedUpSouthernGirl
@FedUpSouthernGirl 3 года назад
“This too shall pass” ....my mother has said this to me often, when I’m stressed about not performing as well as I should in my career, or when I have been distraught bc of an argument with my husband (which honestly was probably over some matter that involved the emergence of the selfish child that still lurks in all of us, likely until we take our last breath). I think it is a jewel of wisdom that only those experienced, wise souls like my mother - who has seen harder days than I can even imagine- can pass on. The sadness of our present age is that we have dismissed these wise souls in favor of shallow celebrities and feel-good corporate messages. They are waning, these tried and true people, as is their timeless knowledge that what seems so pressing and absolute for most of us is merely another day’s problems, which should be shrugged off and learned from, during our journey towards what we think will make us happy. Cheers

My own struggles with self loathing has continually been a negating factor keeping me from healing, and acts as a a form of self punishment for things I have done that I have great shame and rightfully so. While listening to this message I had a bit of an epiphany while Russell was discussing the self and the act of self loathing. I am no longer the person that I was, and if I am, what will I do to never be that person again. “I can not live with myself any longer”. Self loathing will not resolve the sin, and I am not sure that I am even the same person as I was. My mistakes have paved the road up to this point and I have a choice to follow a new path and become the person who I want to be and be rebuilt in the new image that is grateful for my mistakes because it has given me the wisdom to know who I don’t want to be versus the person that I am meant to be.

I will overcome all these voices over time and become aware of the thoughts that are of low self-esteem or the acceptance of less-than-desirable outcomes. . It’s not about making it - it never was supposed to be about getting a good job and making more than my parents as I thought.

I want to share my own "I forgot my keys" story. Few years ago, while going to the rehearsal studio, I forgot my studio keys in home. The rehearsal studio is just outside the town and few kilometres later, when I realised that I forgot my keys, I told to myself "idiot", "moron", etc. . But what happened next, changed my perception of self negativity. Out of nowhere I yelled to myself this: - "what did you say?!" - "who gives you the right to talk to him like that?!" - "it's just a simple and unintentional mistake!" - "don't you get it that it hurts him?" - "c'mon man, protect him. Apologise and realise, that he is a part of you. Love him" As confusing as it may sound, I was talking to own self. At that time I was 26 years old, but I was talking to the one self that was 14 years old. You see, when I was a kid, particularly my father, he used to yell a lot of nasty stuff at me. It was downgrading. I memorised it in my memory and my consciousness. I perceived it as my own identity. That dialog/monolog that I had, was dedicated to 3-5 years old me, that is fragile, that is hurt. It was epic experience. As of then, I became much more aware of myself, of my past, of my patterns, etc. . Took me some time and now I am going to the gym with my father and we actually getting along really well. I often feel that my own mind is trying to kill me, like the voices in my head only wish to destroy me. My most logical reasoning for suicide is just to shut those fucking voices up, to find some kind of peace, some version of silence. My dad once told me, "No matter where you go you have to live with yourself". I'm working on quieting the self hatred and some days are better than others but there's always tomorrow to try again. Watching people like Mr Brand helps because I can identify with what he is saying in a realistic way. It's not the voices in my head that drag me down but how I react to them.

In my CBT I was given a list of intrusive, Negative thoughts that every day people have, Also my therapist told me about his own intrusive thoughts, Which opened my eyes, almost soothing to hear that I’m not the only one with these silly, negative thoughts. It’s all about your reaction to them that cause the problem. Brush them off as only thoughts. Also people with violent past have more tendency to think negative thoughts.

I want you to know, aside from the interruptions of your stream, this was very helpful. I relate to your position. Mister Rodgers was so wonderful in that regard, the man is my hero. Thank you, I will try my best and then some. I have stopped vices and managed to get a grip. I still smoke a lot of pot. I eat it, I drink it, I RSO, I nano CBD. Now the nano cbd works, 1st time in 12 years I found a cbd that works(tommy chongs). I don't think I need to mask the pain with thc anymore, if the cbd works. I am heading towards cutting out the grass now. It's my last real vice(morning noon night). I am going to need the bully gone in order to do this, I try to be proactive. This life shit is hard, my friend. I write songs, raise my kids and there is a lot to beat myself up about. Theres a lot to love. One of the voices needs to shut the f$$k up. Thanks for the video. when Russell talks about Eckhart Tolle, he came at it from a very shallow perspective (because he is rich or happy and comfortable or any number of amazing things that i wish upon everyone.) as someone who is very much in the trenches, so to speak, of depression and self loathing i can say that there is no one thought or day of epiphany. you hope every little thought that makes sense will lead to a feeling of finally being free of this baggage you keep! you cant have one day of epiphany and suddenly your healed/changed and everything is fine now. Russell should know this from his addiction. how much time and hard work and perseverance that takes to quit, he knows there can never be one moment of epiphany that changes everything, and even one thousand moments of epiphany wont change anything unless the person experiencing it actually acts on it. but the horrible thing about real depression is, you know what you have to do but there is no energy to do it. its like, i could do that thing right now or i could watch this show i like or just jack off or anything to escape reality. and this mental block is a real thing. it makes it sooooo hard to change unless you have responsible people around you, who take responsibility for helping their friend or family, even if its really "hard" to get them to see things from a positive perspective, and that's a very rare thing that hardly anyone gets to rely on. even if you are a prodigy, with everything to gain, without a so called "life" with meaningful relationships, girls, sexual events (which seem impossible after a certain amount of time hiding away just trying to survive) everything just seems worthless. its almost impossible to give someone "in the trenches" any advice, because everything already seems out of reach. a counselor might ask, "why do you feel this way" and you might say, "because its true". not knowing and yet knowing that you are distanced from the reality that everyone else experiences and there really is no way to get back to that "normal" dimension. its like Alice in wonderland, and yet the majority seem to be living down that rabbit hole. or maybe i'm the one down the hole. yeah the second one, for sure. anyway there will never be any one epiphany moment that changes anything for anyone, its not real....
