The most important thing "religion" acknowledges -and meditation does not -is the fact you have to give to live. To give until it hurts sometime. That is a profound mission to undertake. Love is at the core of Religion (at least Western religions) and I'm convinced only love makes us human. What specifically is "controversial" about Sam Harris? Or are you referring to the fact that he identifies and articulates the absurdity of religion and religious people cant poke any logical holes in his arguement? He says that belief in religion either requires a person to be misinformed or willing to lie to themselves. May i suggest "forced meditation" as a starter? Be here in the moment. Then Wim Hof breathing excerises plus incremental cold showers. That should build a definition of what meditation feels like it. Hope that helps.
