Old timers run the pads on concrete to deglaze them. Same with metal clutch disks. I use heavy grit paper. Great info. Thanks for sharing.

The rear brakes on my 2018 Sportster used to squal all the time. I swapped the brake pads to EBC sintered pads but they still would squal. Then I added a larger floating rotor (and a bracket offered by Lyndall Racing to run the larger 11.5 inch rotor on the 2012+ bikes that have the small 10.2 inch rear rotor) and swapping from the solid rotor to the floating 11.5 got rid of the squaling. The reason this is with the Sportster is because the caliper is a floating caliper (piston only on one side and the caliper slides slightly with the rear pistons) and with a solid rotor it squals. You can either run a fixed caliper to the solid rotor, or a floating rotor to the stock fixed caliper. Either will work, but the floating rotor is the easier option. I've since designed and am currently in the process of having a bracket made for the rear to run the 11.5 inch floating rotor, but with a 2 piston fixed Brembo p34 rear caliper which will be a significant rear brake upgrade since the rear brake caliper and master cylinder on the Sportster suck ass, and the stock rotor sucks ass too but I've already dealt with that hahaha
@DoubleDMoto
@DoubleDMoto Год назад
Never really thought about changing the rotor but that does make sense to help out. The EBC pads are the ones I’ve had the most problem with noise. The factory ones seem to be a little less noisy but definitely noticeable difference in braking. EBC for the win in that category. Thanks for sharing!

@@DoubleDMoto I bet my right arm if you have a 2012+ with the smaller rear rotor that a floating rotor will fix the noise! There are a few companies that make the 10.2 in a floating rotor if you don't want to buy a bracket for the 11.5 inch rotor. The 10.2 is a weird rotor because it only came on 2012+ Sportsters where the 11.5 came on almost every Harley in the last 20 years, including the Sportster until 2012. Then they upgraded the front from 11.5 to 11.8 and downsized the rear with a "better" caliper and master cylinder. I know Galfer makes the 10.2 in a floating model, but that is literally the only 10.2 inch floating rotor I could find for the rear of a newer Sportster, so going the bracket with the 11.5 floating rotor was an easy decision for me because there is so many 11.5 inch floating rotor options for Harley Davidsons. I went with 11.5 inch Brembo Series Oro rotors and they were great, and got rid of the noise and looked good. The front rotor got damaged in an accident where I was ran over, it got bent because my front caliper was clamped on the rotor at impact which caused it to bend when the front wheel made impact. So I upgraded my front brake setup again, and I am also getting a matching 11.5 for the rear, so if you want an 11.5 inch Brembo rear rotor for your bike meaning all you would need is the bracket from Lyndall (I'd even give you that too but I'd like to wait until I get the new rear bracket made and on the bike before doing that. The rear rotor only had about 3000km on it, it's essentially brand new. I'll be pulling it off the bike soon and hopefully the bracket will be coming off around the same time hahaha if you have Instagram add me @trucker_mac and shoot me a DM! galferusa.com/moto/product/96953/DF724FLW

Nice vid. My only comment is when you put caliper back on bike. Before you tighten the bolt squeeze the brake which aligns the pads, some bikes are pre aligned but not all. Then whilst squeezing brake tighten caliper which means everything is aligned inside caliper with springs and pads etc. like you I love tinkering and you tube has helped me no end. I have just bought a very corroded bike and have stripped it the brakes are horrendous. But slowly it’s going to be lovely again. Great sounding machine

That is a good point. Thanks for sharing! One of the members in my riding group found and old 1972 Sportster in a storage shed at his uncles house and the pads rusted to the rotors. It was a nightmare to get them unstuck. After a lot of time and persuasion they finally broke lose. So I understand. Ride safe!

Yep, just replaced front & back pads about 100 miles ago too & me & my wife took a nice ride last night & they started squealing, only the front though. I know what I will be doing on my day off on Tuesday, cleaning them & putting up X-MÁS lights on house,, prefer wrenching on bike though. Lol! Thank you for sharing!

I definitely prefer wrenching as well. Thanks for watching! I would recommend running the sand paper over as well as cleaning the rotors. Might have picked up some dirty in between the pad and rotor. Question what pads did you replace with? Trying to figure out which pads are better or worse for a future video.

This is exactly what I have been doing for many years every time I have the wheel off as a routine maintenance task. I would add to blow the parts off with air before you begin cleaning, and I use brake cleaner.

Blowing off the parts is a great idea! I’ve use brake cleaner in the past and it does work well. Just don’t like that it can damage some paints. Thanks for the great ideas!

Would you or can you use fine wet and dry paper on the disc instead ?
@DoubleDMoto
@DoubleDMoto 7 месяцев назад
I’ve never used it before, I would try it on a small area and see if it scratches the disc. If it scratches it a lot then I wouldn’t use it. Biggest thing is you don’t want to remove metal it is just to remove the road grime and clean it.

Curious to know why you use Electrical Contact Cleaner instead of Brake Cleaner?
@DoubleDMoto
@DoubleDMoto 2 года назад
I like to use contact cleaner as brake cleaner is a powerful detergent that can damage or stain some materials. Also brake cleaner can leave a residue and contact cleaner won’t.
@finnsgarageLLC
@finnsgarageLLC 2 года назад
Do you apply any grease to pistons and brake pad side mating surface?
@DoubleDMoto
@DoubleDMoto 2 года назад
I usually only put grease on the pin going through and little metal bracket it goes through. You can put it on the metal part of the back of the brake pad as well that touches the piston. Make sure you don’t put any on the pad side that touches the rotor.

@@DoubleDMoto Thanks for responding… I’m having some sort of friction issue with rear brakes after washing the bike. It’s very intermittent and more prominent when performing slow maneuver turns and using a little rear brake for control. It’s like a shuddering vibrations. I pulled the pads out clean them up and still having issue. The bike has only 130 miles on it, brand new!!
@DoubleDMoto
@DoubleDMoto 2 года назад
@@finnsgarageLLC I have cleaned them multiple times different ways and this is the best way that will definitely help. I will say that I do a lot of parking lot drills and I have to do this often as I heat the rear brake up.

How about constant rubbing or dragging of the pad?

@@DoubleDMoto no i mean why are my pads dragging n rubbing the rotors constantly? No free rotation
@DoubleDMoto

@@justaguy4real could be a misaligned brake caliper. They will always be some drag but they should have some rotation.

@@justaguy4real one thing I would recommend is losing the brake caliper bolts then spin the wheel. Press brake lever to stop wheel and hold the lever till you tighten the caliper bolts. That will help to make sure all is aligned. May need an extra hand to do this.

i was able to fix squeeking with water+shampoo and 3M brake cleaner. But after 10-15 km, squeek start again.
@DoubleDMoto
@DoubleDMoto 4 месяца назад
That is usually what happens with just water or brake cleaner as the “glaze“ is still left on the pads and rotor. You probably just cleaned out some dirt is why it stop for a short period and then once brakes got warm it will start again. Definitely try taking pads off and sanding the glaze off and cleaning rotors should help tremendously.

Always wear gloves and a facemask when handling friction materials, especially if you're going to create dust/clean dust. Some very nasty harmful materials in those pads. Some friction material still contains asbestos. Better safe than sorry.
