Erin, I love watching your videos because I feel like I am talking to a friend or neighbor about gardening. You keep it real with your consideration of time, cost, and amount of work. You are a practical gardener and your tips have been most helpful! I went on a Newport, RI garden tour this summer and one home was all dahlias...gorgeous. I have always thought about growing them but then decided it was too complicated and fussy. You have changed my mind! Your no-nonsense practical tips seem doable -so I'm going for it. Thanks! Thank you so much for this information. I'm living in the Netherlands in zone 8 but temps can get fiddly over here and I do see that the temp on monday might get to a freezing point and now I know I don't have to freak out and after that date it will go up again (night temps I'm talking about) so I've time to do as you said with digging them up and such. Love the tip about the wood chips as I was thinking paper for storing and I do need to get my dahlia's on the attic and hope they'll store well over there as I do have dry places but not frost free ones in my sheds. I'm a newbie at dahlia's so every info is very welcome. Thank you so much!! Greets from the Netherlands.

I do use large Tupperware containers but do not seal these boxes. I do not wash the tubers thoroughly. Having been fussy with washing in the past, using peroxide, I had more trouble with disease and drying. One year I realized that the tubers left in the pots of tender trees brought inside, lasted throughout the winter in zone 5b. So now I get fresh potting soil, lay the tubers out after most of the dirt is brushed off, dump the soil onto them, keep the lid cracked for air flow, check on them once a month, spritz and touch wood, near to perfect storage. I slip the tubers back in the ground early to mid April, even though we may have two or three snowfalls after. Every climate is different so you must think about house temp as well.

Last year I dug up my tubers, but never covered them with anything. Most got too dry, but I did plant probably 3 varieties and they still produced. I think I'll do better this year, learning along the way. I have sooo enjoyed them and all the arrangements that I am wanting to keep trying. With that experience I feel they were real forgiving to me, in Boise, Idaho (zone 6 or so).

Zone 5 ny and we get so much rain this time of year so I cut stems and dig same day otherwise they’ll turn to mush. I let them dry on my unheated basement floor on newspaper, then pack them in cardboard with peat moss and newspaper around and lightly mist a couple times throughout winter. Labeling tips are great, esp when you have a lot of varieties it starts to get even more important 😅

Interesting 🧐! Years back, I was determined to save my bulbs, I waited for the frost, when I went out to cut them back, the water in the stalks were frozen, and the tuber was mushy! So the next year, I cut my dahlias before frost, some sprouted in spring but most didn’t😪. I stopped saving them! You’re giving me inspiration Erin👍 , going to try again next year🙏

If you don’t have a basement, look for a cool place (45-50 degrees F is perfect but they can do ok on either side of that) somewhere else. I used to keep them in a friend’s heated garage.

I planted dahlia for the very first time this year and fell in love with it. I want to save the tubers this fall. My basement is heated 65F (18C). I also have a cold room in my basement which is not heated at all so temperature in that room is around 38F to 50F (3C to 10C). Is it ok to store the tubers in the cold room or is it better in the heated basement? I'm in Toronto, Canada (zone 5b).

@theimpatientgardener I know this is a whacky question but is it possible to store the tubers in a fridge? My basement is too warm and my garage is too cold. Thank you for this information. I do not have any dahlias yet, but I am looking forward to purchase for next season. When Is it time to buy them? I have both of those and got both from Longfield Gardens. They usually sell in a package of three which is perfect. (If you’ve seen any videos or IG posts where I’ve shown HS Date, that’s a group of three and it’s perfect). They usually put theirs on sale in December and I pick them up ASAP so I don’t miss out in the varieties I want. They will ship when you specify or when it’s right for your zone.

I dug mine up this weekend even though they wern't black and we haven't had an official hard frost. I just couldn't deal with the floppyness and messiness out in the beds any longer. It was a beautiful 60 degree fall day and I went to town doing fall cleanup. I have them out on the walkway getting rain to wash the rest of the dirt off, then planned on letting them dry out. I do have a milk crate i can put them in, and move them to a covered area outside to finish drying out. Do you think i've ruined them?

Great info! I'm in Zone 8B Seattle so I guess I will leave my dahlias in the ground. It's my first year growing them. I have well draining soil so I'm hoping our fall and winter rains will not rot them. My question for you is, I have changed my mind about where I want some of them, so I do need to move some. Would I wait until two weeks after they have died back to move them? Thanks!
@Seurnn
@Seurnn 4 года назад
They should be ok, I also live in 8B, but I have found that if I have other perennials nearby, sometimes they can "disappear" over winter, so it may depend on what is planted near your dahlias.
@lajpromoemailsbainbridgeis508
@lajpromoemailsbainbridgeis508 4 года назад
I’m in the Seattle area - the biggest risk is the potential for rot from too much rain. I dig mine up, but I know some people leave them in the ground, and simply cover them with a tarp or black plastic bag, and cover that with some mulch (so it’s not so ugly,), in the spring remove the mulch and the bag. Even with that approach, you will want to dig them up after two or three years or you will end up an empty spot in the center of the plant (as the new tubers will have formed on the outside of the clump.

I stored a bunch of tubers last winter (zone 5) and I put them in vented boxes in wood shavings, in a cool area in the basement... in May I brought them out of storage and they were all dry and shriveled up, desiccated and sad looking. What do you do (if anything) all winter long... should you check on them and mist them, or try to retain their plumpness through the winter? I lost 80% of my tubers... they just never grew again.
@TheImpatientGardener
@TheImpatientGardener 4 года назад
Deb Potter If it makes you feel better I think this is really common. So the trick with storing dahlia tubers is the right amount of moisture. Too much and they rot. Too little and they turn to dust. You’ve got the solution figured out already. Check on them once. Month or so and spritz some water on the storage medium if it’s feeling dry. I store my boxes in a big contractor garbage bag that I pull up or down. That helps keep some moisture in there later in the winter and keeps that more consistent without the plastic ever getting near the tubers. I leave the top open so there’s still some airflow too.

Hello. I am wondering if you use any fungicide like Sulfur on Dahlia tubers before storing them for winter.
@TheImpatientGardener
@TheImpatientGardener 4 года назад
I don’t, although I’ve read about it. One year I tried a method in which one of the steps was dipping the in a weak bleach solution. I haven’t felt the need to repeat that or try using a fungicide, but that’s just me.

I only have one dahlia now because none of my other tubers made it through my over-wintering process last year. The one I have is in a giant pot and many of its stalks are already open because they got so tall they broke. If it's in a container, do you think I should still wait until the frost of death? :-)
@TheImpatientGardener

Yes, I the same process applies. That said, dahlia tubers are pretty forgiving so even if you don’t do everything exactly this way they will probably be fine

@TheImpatientGardener
@TheImpatientGardener 4 года назад
Yes, that’s the ideal temperature but you can fudge it a bit. I have the exact same situation as you: unheated, detached garage and a heated basement. I store mine in the coldest corner of the basement, up against the outer wall and they do fine. That part of the basement is probably in the 50s most of the time but you might be able to push it to 60. If you can find a friend with a cooler out of the way corner you could borrow for a few months that might be best. But if you have no alternative, try the coolest corner of your basement. You have nothing to lose but a little time.

Help! We've gotten so much rain here that my dahlias are standing in water! They are wilting and I am afraid they will rot. If I dig them now, before a frost, will I get flowers next year?
@TheImpatientGardener
@TheImpatientGardener 4 года назад
Bayla Schauer Oh that’s a tough one. If they truly are in standing water right now there’s a chance your tubers could rot before you have a chance to dig them, so you might be best to dig them if it seems unlikely things will dry out soon. Rinse them off and put them somewhere cool and dry to dry out for a few days. Or you might want to just dig some now . It’s a little chancy either way so maybe that way you’re not putting all your eggs in one basket.

Have no need to here. Ours have been in the ground now for 25yrs and all I do is make a heavy mulch of farmyard manure in the autumn. They have produced a fantatsic hosw each year. Yes, we do not get the heavy ground frosts amd if the top one inch is frozen that is unusual, so if you ahve the same conditions then leave them in and cover them in muck.
