I've organized fabric all kinds of ways over the years, but my new favorite for yardage is the comic book storage method, and I show you how to do it in today's video.
Comic book boards are archival quality, which means they won't damage your fabric if you store it on the boards for a long period of time. Once the fabric is wrapped around, they look like mini bolts you can store on a bookshelf, which is very aesthetically pleasing.
You can also fit all kinds of fabric on it. In addition to quilting cotton I've stored 108" wide backings, flannel, garment fabrics like, coating wool, knits, even sequins.
I love how this looks and you can absolutely do it too. We are partnering with our local hobby store to be able to bring you comic book boards at a lower price than you'll find on Amazon. You can grab them here: shop.quiltaddictsanonymous.co...
You can also grab the alligator clips I used at this affiliate link: www.amazon.com/dp/B093FK1WQC/...

You room looks beautiful. My only suggestion would have been to measure the length of the fabrics before rolling onto the comic boards. Put a small piece of paper w yardage under the little clipping holding them on the boards. This way when you look at the fabric you know how much you have, enough or not.

I have all my fabric organized on boards like this. I bought some small blank stickers to write the fabric info on - length, width(for apparel fabric), source, content, etc. I just put the sticker on the side of the fabric. It’s been working out great!

I have used the ruler method and do that on my fabric. I’m going to switch to the comic book board to have it easier to access on the shelf without having to pull from the middle of a stack.

I started doing this a couple years back and it’s the best. I sew everything from quilts to apparel to lingerie and it works great for every type of fabric.

I’ve been using comic book boards for several years now, I was happy to see that you were able to put 108” on the boards also so that will be my next step!

All good tips. May I add that since i'm more of a garment sewist and have more variety in thicknesses, I can't estimate at first glance the amout I have. So, I add the lenght and whith size on the top of the board. Since it is already laid out, not much more work but makes it a lot easier to choose your fabric when you know that you need 'this' much. I can't tell you how many nice piles i've destroyed before finding long enough lenght needed. Also write any other info like fiber %, or already prewash, or includes extra bits and pieces from a previous project. It is an investment in time well spent. For the boards, often I need fabric- store size so when I receive packages in plain boxes or a trip to Ikea, I cut the big size I need, Strong enough for 10-12 ++ metres of upholstry, drapery, wools... Also 'long' bobby pins ( for hair ) work better and don't break. now I just need a bigger room....

This looks gorgeous! I really, really appreciate you taking the time to show this with garment fabrics (especially that wool coating!). I mostly sew garments, and when I've seen this method before, it's always been just with quilting cottons. I'm so excited to organize my stash this way!

This video has expanded my underxtanding of what can be stored on comic book boards. :). I picked a pack up a few months ago and immediately found them helpful for measuring with as a visually impaired person, mine are seven by eleven inches and it's a snap to cut them down to whatever length I want. They're also super sturdy and I'm using them for makes in mixed media. So the only reason I got them was for fabric storage and so far have used them for everything but. %_^ It was helpful to see the different lengths and weights of fabric on your boards.

Thank you for your wonderful tips! I’ve learned so much from your great videos! I am a beginner quilter and am just beginning to build my stash and organize my fabrics. I purchased the comic book boards and wrapped some fabrics. I thought it might be helpful to jot down the yardage in pencil at the top, on the exposed part of the board, so I’d quickly know how much fabric I had without having to unwrap it. It’s worked like a charm! And I will be getting those alligator clips for sure! Thanks again! 😊

I have being doing this for years and love it! When I have a lot of fabric to do, I put 2 strips of masking tape on my table indicating where I need to fold it so it is the right width to start wrapping around the board. It is easier as I don’t have to fiddle around with the fabric and the board each time to get it right, as I can’t eyeball anything to save my life! I use plastic coated paper clips to secure the fabric as I find alligator clips are not as flexible and can also become brittle over time.

I put my smaller pieces of fabric on comic boards last year, but I didn't think that it would work for my larger yardage. So thanks so much for showing your 108" and larger yardage pieces! Mine is stacked neatly on shelves but the fabric I want is usually on the bottom lol. I'll be putting my larger fabric pieces on comic boards soon as I have my table cleaned off!

I love the way your storage looks! I did mine on Comic Book Boards too and now have it stashed in my armoire. But I would love to see how you manage those widebacks! I just can’t handle that much material and would love to put them in my regular stash too.

I attach a small tag on the outside of each mini-bolt listing the yardage of each piece. I purchased large paper clips that are coated with plastic so they won't cause rust. I tug the yardage tag into that paper clip.

Inspired by your organization videos, I went to Target in search of clear stacking bins for my 5” precuts and jelly rolls. Guess what, they have those too and I’m so happy with the results! TY for a great vid.❤

What lights do you use in your sewing room / where your fabric is stored? I have led lights that are the color of daylight? Is my fabric safe or should I cover it? Thank you for your videos.
