Guys! I am 55 years old and have coins stored since 1971 that my father bought. This is easy, remove the oxygen supply from the equation....go to Fin feather Fur or Harbor Freight or some gun show and get a $10 ammo can, drop a pack of the dehumidifier form the monthly new shoe's box your wife brings home, then use cheese cloth from Dollar Tree to wrap them in layers, or the brown paper most bullion dealers use for shipping (NO PLASTIC WITH PVC), like a lasagna, and it will NEVER tarnish. Ammo cans keep ammunition for more than 50 years without going bad, NO HUMIDITY in them and you can fill it up with gold weighing 80 pounds and still strong enough to grab by the handle. And, you can bury it if you need to. Neither water nor heat will kill it.

@florida stacker this vid really helped a lot for the tube storage question I had. But one thing I was waiting for in this vid was the storage solution for the 10oz bars once they are in capsules, in case you wanna keep them as scratch free as possible. And efficiently stacking of 10oz too. Great vid man,full view and thumbs up brother. I love shiny silver.

I guess it's a good idea to buy coins in tubes instead of buying loose coins. Otherwise it is complicated to buy tubes separately, and it is not cost effective to buy dozens of capsules for lose coins. Most tubes contain 25 coins, others 20, like the Phillarmonics.
@CyrusOfNaias
@CyrusOfNaias 3 года назад
Tubes: I like the circular Whitman tubes. They have twisting tops, and are very clear (at least when you first get them!), so you can see what's in them without fuss. I agree on the non-twisting tubes. Very insecure. Even if you're very careful, I don't like tops that can just pop off if you drop them
@floridastacker

I forgot to mention those! Even had them sitting on the table next to all the other tubes. The video was getting long and i just flat out forgot them during the tube part and moved on. Yes, they are a nice option for seeing the silver :)

5:00 - Most plastic flips should NOT be used for storage. They release PVC which will damage a coin's surface. Only use those for temporary transportation, etc...and then don't forget to remove them.

Milk spots can develop months, even years after purchase. I have had coins develop spots in capsules and tubes. Tarnish doesn’t seem to be a problem, but a couple of the 2020 ASEs I bought had slight toning on the edge when I got them. Doesn’t bother me as bullion coins are bullion coins. Most of my more numismatic coins in capsules rarely spot, like proof ASE’s, and Perth Mint stuff. Queens beasts and proof maples tend to spot pretty bad over time.
@floridastacker

Thanks for sharing and yes I am experiencing what you stated with milk spots myself. Several of my capsuled coins have developed spots. I never capsule a spotted coin so they must have developed over time.

I put all coins and bullion in capsules. I purchase all gem bu and or bu. Even an American Eagle bullion coin. For me I’d like to keep everything in the best condition I can. Not worried about losing the premium in a capsule because I have the option of removing the capsule if I go to sell the item. As far as tubes I also have the tubes that the capsules fit in. This is just the way I personally like to store my silver.
@Nattleby
@Nattleby 3 года назад
I started out doing that, but it became too expensive and bulky. Now I only store numismatic coins and the most pristine bullion coins in capsules. The rest go in tubes, Especially generics. Even buying BU, a lot of bullion get spots. The worst are Britannia’s, but ASEs spot a lot too.

A couple of criticisms The money you're spending for these capsules and capsule tubes negate the extra money that you might get back on selling. These methods also greatly increase the storage volume required. I think it's best to stick to tubes and monster boxes

While I get your criticism and do not refute your logic, why? @@floridastacker I know! It was useful info and you have helped me with getting correct fitting tubes before :) I'm commenting to add to the discussion and they are factors that should be taken into account. The extra costs of capsules and volume it takes for storage is something that should be considered. I know it goes against the “if you can’t hold it, you don’t own it” philosophy, but don’t overlook Gold & Silver IRAs! I have a few IRA’s and just transferred the smallest one from a Putnam mutual fund into a precious metals IRA (with Entrust Group). VERY easy to do. Purchased the metals from SD Bullion. The only downside: IRS rules dictate your metals must be stored in a depository… if you take shipment, it’s an”IRA distribution”. Since I’m older than 59-1/2, I can take delivery of some or all of this inventory without penalty. My plan is to fully transfer this silver & gold to my stack at home over the next 5 years. Just wanted to put this out there for awareness, since I haven’t heard anyone posting about it.
@floridastacker

I will be doing a Gold and Silver IRA video (finally) next month, maybe October. I agree with your reasoning it's really the viewers. It takes a lot of time to research, write, record, edit, publish, etc. on a topic that won't get more than 1000 views over 30 days and maybe +3 subscribers. However, it is one I have not covered and so it is time to do so!

Every BU coin or round I have is in an airtight capsule. Silver Eagles, Maple Leafs, Morgan rounds, etc. Why wouldn’t I? If I have a BU coin it’s silly to let it degrade. I’m not an investor, I’m a hoarder. My stack is a hedge against a failing dollar and hyper inflation. I don’t sell anything in my stack. But that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t take care of them. Besides, capsules are cheap, and I enjoy doing the small amount of work it takes to preserve them. I also use BU coins as Christmas presents. In a capsule with foam they make a nice little gift that doesn’t break the bank.

A great presentation on how to protect coins. The next step is to protect capsules from scratching. I put every capsule and 2x2 into its own 2"x2 3/4" ziplock bag like the one you removed a new capsule from. I then store them in double row boxes designed for 2x2's, which is more space saving that the Guardhouse capsule box. This allows you to easily remove a coin by pulling on the top of the bag and you can also make notes on the top using a permanent sharpie.

Great video. Thanks for the info. How do you store larger 1 kilo bars? I was thinking to wrap them in silversmith's cloth and put them in ziplock bags?
@floridastacker

I believe I responded to your email but for the public record cool, dry, dark place. Box is fine and adding any sort of moisture absorbing product will help prevent tarnish over time.

Always good to see helpful tips videos. What’s your second favorite maples tube? Sometimes the first choice isn’t available
@floridastacker
@floridastacker 3 года назад
Well i like the Retro tubes best but they are very hard to find. I'd say the clear silver dollar tubes but they only hold 19 when the lid is all the way on. You can get 20 in them, but the lid isn't fully twisted to do so.

Just twist the lid on the tube and they all open easy
@floridastacker
@floridastacker Год назад
If only that were the case. I've found the Guardhouse tubes eliminate the need for long finger nails or some tool to pop them open. Sure some are easier than others to pop off, but considering how often I pull things out for videos I went with the easier option of the twist off

I was walking home when I walked by the Mint in Ottawa. I saw that they sold some 10 oz bars and, as I had some cash from my graduation, decided to get one on a whim. However, when I got home I realized that the plastic seal that it came with was broken. Is this a severe issue? I understand silver tarnishes quite quickly and I wouldn't want its value to decrease (though I've been reading online that tarnishing apparently doesn't). I've just put it into a food ziplock bag that I sucked all the air out of and then stuffed it into a little watch container for now. But my questions is what should I do? Order one of those little containers you had? Or would it be fine out of the plastic? Many thanks!

@floridastacker Год назад
I have a few bars with ripped plastic and yes they will tone in that area over time. It won't really decrease the value so to speak but some potential buyers may pass. It's up to you if you want to capsule the bar. They are nice but be careful sliding them around as they scratch easy (the plastic) and over time they start to look less appealing with a lot of scratches. I like to keep my bars in the original plastic if I can, but have capsules on a couple I like to show in my videos

@floridastacker

The lighthouse capsules are a little different. I am sure they are perfectly fine but they are sized a little different and didn't work as well with my tubes/boxes. For me the guardhouse boxes work nicely so i went with the guardhouse capsules to ensure the right fit.

Cool video. I keep my silver airtight sealed. But I must tell you, I handle it with my fingers. Mostly on the rims and edges though. I love the feel of silver. I feel better after I touch it, for some reason. So I touch it all the time. I just can't help myself. I love silver. I have some gold too. But in my eyes, silver is so much prettier.
