Nice trick but what about metal fatigue? Wouldn't the torsional stress cause it to break much easier?
@Ragnarok043
@Ragnarok043 7 лет назад
yes it does work harden the metal, but you can counteract it by annealing with a torch
@Sbullakis87
@Sbullakis87 7 лет назад
erdemk0 I agree 100%
@lasersbee
@lasersbee 7 лет назад
erdemk0.. Was thinking the exact same thing. It would be more logical to roll the wire between 2 stiff, hard and flat surfaces.
@roccocroce
@roccocroce 7 лет назад
What I was thinking. I've done this with a few materials and noticed considerable brittleness regardless of how ductile the material. Maybe if you just twist really slowly without overheating the wire?
@William_ar98
@William_ar98 7 лет назад
i did this by hand once and i breaks really easily

I've used twisted bailing wire for as long as I remember. I'm 68 and I first used if hanging mufflers on old cars as a kid. Great material to work with. And as long as it's not over twisted, metal fatigue isn't an issue. Strong and long lasting "bail-out"..
@eurobum2012

I like roll the wire back and forth between two perfectly flat pieces of wood, marble or tile.

@jadenkrosis3087

I like it :) The material is likely coat hanger wire which is called black muffle. It is a soft and very malleable material and its pretty tough. Its made to be twisted, stretched and bent all you want to a point, of course. It is not heat treatable, I mean a guy can hit it with a torch or toss it in a draw oven for a while at any temp you like but it wont make any difference and it will not anneal this already pre-annealed wire. It looks as though it is stretched very close to its limits so I imagine the idea is to make straight rods/wires/cables that arent meant to be bent too much more after this. This is a pretty cool way of doing it.

Neat trick, but in my experience it weakens the wire considibrally
@conniestevenson226

Its nice to stiffen the wire but if it bends much will prolly snap
@pyroslavx7922

I prefer a "good" used salvaged, bent, twisted, kinky wire to "bad", brittle, weak micro-cracked internal overstressed one. Try scratching it - pulling your fingernails (or teeth ;-) over it and you will feel it is cracked, even if not visible.
@grexursorum6006
@grexursorum6006 7 лет назад
Not bad... but the wire gets birttle due to that, doent it? The conected wires look quite awesome... nice idea!!!
@or2kr
@or2kr 7 лет назад
only the coating, you have to do something seriously wrong to make the wires themselves brittle
@polyjohn3425
@polyjohn3425 7 лет назад
+Otto Knabe no, this kind of torsion will make the wires very stiff, far less flexible than they were beforehand, and also decrease their tensile strength considerably.. You can fix by annealing, but just twisting them will make them much weaker.
@or2kr
@or2kr 7 лет назад
+PolyJohn probably, I just meant that it won't suddenly change properties, its still just metal... I guess this "trick" is more for looks than usability
@OminousPinapple
@OminousPinapple 7 лет назад
Otto, No.. it will change the material's properties. The stress on this metal will make it brittle. It needs to be annealed before use.
@kentvandervelden

Well done video. Many people saying this will not work and seem to have good explanations, but I do this pretty frequently to join insulated wires into cables by twisting them together, solid and stranded. So far, not a problem, just keep the pitch of the twist reasonable. Have not thought to use it to straighten a wire.

Neat idea, but it will definitely work-harden the wire, and you end up with a very ripply surface. Much simpler is just to stretch the wire slightly, without twisting.

I don't know how much this weakens the metal, but that's allot of turns, I like to put one end in a vise and grip the other end with large pliers and jerk it, until its perfectly straight.

You wouldn't do this if you know about Young's modulus. It will break soon because this whole twisting process imitates bending and straightening wire many times.
@UnbeltedSundew

Works better if you spin it while in tension (ie. pull back on the drill).

I'll also use square jewlery wire as small drill bits for drilling holes in plastic or even soft wood. It breaks often but ::ascii shrug::
@Tricknologyinc
@Tricknologyinc 7 лет назад
No thanks. It's wire anymore. It's twisted wire. If you're just making some crafty artsy fartsy thing, you may not care, but if you need to maintain the strength of the wire, even if you anneal it, you have fatigued, cracked, and stressed it, as well as multiplying the stretching done further from the center by twisting it. Even if you anneal i and you haven't accidentally drawn it beyond it's malleability, You have now completely redistributed all stress applied by tension. You have also greatly distorted the surface shape. the proper way to straighten wire is to run it through 3 rollers set to bend it so slightly from a straight condition, it will simply spring back to straight. Actually, simply tension the wire and plucking it to vibrate will do much of the same thing! You have discovered how people twist wire though!

..And you get a very straight piece of wire that is almost useless from fatigue.. It's certainly a cool trick, maybe as a trick to impress your friends, but i can't imagine a use for a wire twisted that much.

I think you can use the same technique but instead passing the wire through a small orifice as you pull. This was, the wire won't get twisted and weak.
@jamesperkins2552
@jamesperkins2552 2 года назад
But the wire would be to brittle to use after that. You take all the plastic deformation potential out of it. Every twist puts the grains under more tensile stress, causes cracks to spread, etc. you are forcing creep on every void and imperfection in the metal. This is how metal fatigue happens.

Boba Fett yeah I figured that much. I was wondering if the metal fatigue would just cause it to break.
@jangisgand6140

@playfullburito
