Very cool Brock! I'm just at the doorstep of woodworking - I think it is mandatory after you hit 55... lol. I can't think of anything more satisfying than cutting down and milling your own wood from a tree on your property and making a potential heirloom piece of furniture out of it. Looking forward to seeing the entire process start to finish. Thanks for sharing 🤠

I am getting ready to buy a track saw for this. It just seems like a quick easy way to do this.

Good idea when processing air dried lumber is to bring it inside to acclimate. After drying inside, straight edge one edge with a skil saw or bandsaw to ruff widths. Then leave the resulting cuts to relax. Thickness with a hand plane or planer later. There are many ways to process hard lumber. Best wishes.

One thing I've always done differently is to remove the straight edge I would have just snapped a line and cut it with my circular saw. It's easier than doing the sled thing. I'm a retired finish carpenter.

Great job Brock! I just did the exact same thing to take a bunch of random rough cut 4/4 walnut down to usable 2/4 yes 1/2 inch, for a miniature grandfather clock for my wife. Lots of work with a 12 inch planer. the project turned out awesome. I love Walnut!!

I have made a straight edge on pieces with a live edge by snapping a chalk line on them. It worked ok for how particular I am. I use 6'' trim. Everywhere. If you had a sawmill the set up time and cut time to do that would be less time than it took to rip the plywood that youall did.

Awesome a router sled would be great for flattening wider slabs. I need to build another one but out of metal I also need to build a bigger shop.

The lumber you milled for me is all dry and ready to use. I started with some of the most warped pieces for this video

I've got a pile of oak saw logs that will end up a lot like the lumber you cut. Thanks for the useful information that may help me with the process!

Based on the size of the pieces you are working down to, you could skip the planer sled and tablesaw initially by using a chalk line to give you a straight line on the rough board and then use the bandsaw to cut out the strips (a little wider than needed so you can run them on the jointer to straighten them). The strips coming off the bandsaw will relax some from any of the internal stresses in the board, but will give you a stick that should be easier to work with have less twist to deal with. Looks like some nice wood to be working with, have a good one!!

Can you accomplish the first approximation of straightening by putting the slabs in a steam chamber?
