Learn how to stretch watercolour paper properly. I demonstrate two different methods of stretching watercolour papers. One method for the thick quality watercolour papers and one for thinner lower quality watercolor papers.
Whether you are a beginner or a more advanced watercolor painter I am sure you'll find something of interest here.

Hi Paul …. So pleased to see you back. I find your instructional technique easy to follow and have gained a great deal from your videos. Thank you. One tip I have concerning sketching paper is to use 1000 gram white lining paper which is readily available from DIY stores in 10 metre rolls for about a fiver. The 1000 gram is ideal for pencil sketching and picture planning. I have also used it with watercolour provided the paint is not too wet. I have made an A4 and A3 template out of MDF and after 30 mins or so with a modelling knife I have a huge pile of art paper which I leave under a weight to flatten before use. Ideal for practice. Hi Paul. We love all your content 👍 We've stretched good quality, thick watercolour paper as suggested here and in many other videos. When dry, it's perfectly flat/'stretched' and seems fine, but when we start painting it buckles. What do you think is going wrong?

Not sure why that is happening, it should be fine. Perhaps you are using far too much water when painting?

Tell us about your board. Recommended size. Is it plywood, masonite? How thick? Decades ago I took a water color class in college, and he had old newsprint fastened/with tacks, then we would add the cloth/paper and tape it with masking tape if I recall correctly.

The board is plywood, I wouldn't worry about the board, any board will do the job.

Thank you! I just started to watch your videos, it is amazing. But I am only beginner (literally today was my first day when I took brush in hand :D ) . Stupid question - after such stretching, I just have to start using ''wet on wet'' teqniques, as we usual do?

Yes, but you might want to let the paper dry and stretch properly before you start.

Thank you very much, did my first stretch now. Just want to know if the Leyton watercolour book/block, 300G wood pulp paper, the ones that are glued around the edges, also needs a stretch before painting?

Or use 640gsm Saunders paper or 524gsm Bockingford. No stretching required!

How thick is is quality paper? Any way to gauge the difference by appearance or is it just based on brand name papers? Thanks so much!

The best paper is hand-made paper which has a rough edge and sold in single sheets. Watercolour paper is sold by weight 150gsm or 300gsm the higher the number the thicker the paper and therefore less likely to buckle when water is applied.

Hi Paul! Thank you so much for this instructional video. I have a question. After you've stretched your watercolor paper, do you keep it on your stretcher and paint? Or do you need to remove it from your stretcher then paint?

I'd keep it on the stretcher, paint then cut out the paper.

Hi Paul. I'm yet to begin with watercolour painting again after a big break of well over twenty years. I've tried to find the gummed tape here in New Zealand at various stores in our city and couldn't find it anywhere. I went into a specialist Art Shop and the guy told me that the manufacturers had had a lot of complaints from artists about the gummed tape. It was not sticking and becoming unstuck, so the manufacturers aren't producing it. That's why it's not been distributed in our shops. Could I use ordinary masking tape? PS. The paper tape works well provided you do not put too much water on it. However, you could try masking tape not sure it will work. If not looks like you'll have to experiment - good luck.

Hi Paul. Absolutely totally unable to source Artists Gummed Brown tape, so thinking because I'm just beginning in watercolour (again), will just have to persevere with masking tape. Thanks for your advice. Francie 🙂

What is the difference between hot pressed and cold pressed paper?

Cold pressed paper has a slightly bumpy, textured surface, hot pressed paper has a smooth surface finish.

Thanks for the instruction...BUT....I noticed that the board w/ the wet paper has two red spots in the lower left corner and the 'dry' paper doesn't. The wet paper was quite 'wrinkled' when you taped it all around. I have been taught that you should soothe the paper out as much as possible BEFORE taping it, which you didn't do. It appears that the two papers, the wet and the dry, are two different attempts.

No, but unless it is very good quality it may well buckle while painting, in which case the paint may pool. Which is not a good idea.

Because unless you use very high quality paper it will wrinkle when wet, therefore the watercolour will pool. Stretching avoids this.

Unless you use top quality watercolour paper it is likely it will buckle when wet, causing pools of water. Stretching paper eliminates the buckling of the paper.
