1 tip From a 68-year-old-guy who grew up shooting a recurve bow: be careful you don't twist the bow on its axis (i.e., left or right) while bending it across your leg. Doing so can cause the laminate to pull apart and ruin your bow (lesson learned at age 15).

Back in the 1950's my Dad delaminated a 25# Bear recurve I had saved for, before I had a chance to shoot it the first time! I cried. Fortunately, the local shop was able to epoxy the bow. Someone in my family still shoots it. Lesson learned: Never let anyone "show you how" with your gear until you are sure there is no other means to accomplish the task.

The stringing is done with ease according to this method, and I don't feel that the bow is being stressed. There is no lateral pressure applied to the bow at any time, and the limb is bent no more than when it is drawn. The PSE Kingfisher is a very sturdy bow, with a very strong magnesium riser and fibreglass limbs. I wouldn't be able to warp the bow if I wanted to. It might warp weaker bows, especially ones with narrow limbs, I don't know. If someone could present evidence of bow warping, I would be keen to see it.
@baronburgamot243
@baronburgamot243 7 лет назад
Anthony Marr yeah same. Lots of talk of warping, nothing to actually support the assumption.

what length of string do you use? i lost the original string and i bought a 53-inch one but i don't think it's long enough. maybe i'm just not bending the bow enough

Its been nearly a decade since i had a working recurve bow. Im in my mid twenties and only just received a new one as a gift. I was ecstatic but had forgotten how to string a bow in this way, because my only working bow was a compound. Thank you because this helps immensely, while i was a bit trepidatious at first due to the fear of snapping the limbs, i was able to string it with a fair amount of ease. Once again, thank you for the short but very helpful lesson.

Your welcome, but get a bow stretcher for long term use so you don't twist your limbs
@SystemofEleven
@SystemofEleven 9 лет назад
I was taught that you have to be careful with this method and pay close attention to where you're putting the pressure on the limbs, but it's still a valid and pretty easy method. You can't really damage a good bow unless you apply the force improperly (hence the being careful part) and are putting too much force into it. I actually can't use a stringer, though I have one; I lack the pure arm strength to pull the bow straight up, even with a dinky 25-pounder. Basic human physics, it's easier to push than to pull, and easier to pull horizontally or down than up, which is why levers and pulleys exist. But yeah, still be careful doing this! One of the reasons for doing it farther forward is to better control the force applied and limit torque.

I think I will get a stringer. I learned the method shown here but with my new 60lb recurve, the lower limb likes to twist as I bend the bow to string it. It sometimes leads to the lower loop popping out of the notch while under high tension as I try to string it. Bad news.
