How to strip Romex. There are many ways to strip romex wire. These are the easy and safe ways to strip romex and not have to worry about cutting the inside wires. This video was inspired from watching another channel telling people to strip romex in a highly unsafe way.

My friend love your videos. I'm the guy who's changing careers. You know what I bet I could use harbor freight tools for a fraction of the cost. In my old career I can take someone's gallbladder out with a Walmart knife and a bottle of wisky lol. Like in medicine if your great at your craft you can use any tool to get the job done.

I have the Southwire version of that Milwaukee romex stripper. Only use it from time to time when doing something around the house with romex, but got it when I was running some flourescent lights in the garage....That tool is great, and a time saver. I wouldn't try the knife version as I'd likely be getting bandaids or stitches with that method.

Great video thanks brother. I like the way your doing it. I learned something and I'm old. I just replaced my klien strippers with a set of Channel lock brand. Klien strippers are great but after 20 years plus you get a little like me don't want to work. I have done a lot of wiring on heavy equipment and Simi trucks and trailers. I completely rewired two houses weather head to the meter from the meter to the panel then the house. I have only just cut about an inch or two from the end then just peal it back. Cut the insulation off strip the wire put the bend in it and be done with it. The hardest thing for me is putting the right wire on the right terminal. Being a mechanic I think you could see me messing up a few times. I don't mess around with anything over 220. Like your videos keep up the great work see you in the next one thanks again brother

Yeah, I could see people getting all crazy with the razor blade cutting too deep. Sometimes I will just grab hold of the ground with one hand, the rest of the wires with the other and pull them apart to strip the sheathing. Whatever way that doesnt nick the conductors is all good. Anyway blah blah blah thanks for sharing man

Looks pretty similar to twin and earth cable we use in Ireland all we do is split the end down the middle with a snips grab the earth and wrap it round the tip of the snips and pull till its stripped as much as needed

It's all the feels. Ya got to have the feels for which ever method you use. All will work without knicking wire, all will knick wire too, when used improperly.
@BradsWorkbench
@BradsWorkbench 6 лет назад
Yea I definitely agree with that, however some methods increase your odds at knicking the wire while others decrease it. But you’re right, there is no full proof way. At least none that I know of yet
@ronsshed886
@ronsshed886 6 лет назад
Tough Tool Reviews the problem with the methods that decrease knicks arise as soon as you run into older wire. I like the romex ripper method for beginners, but even it's not perfict. And what's with all the resi hate 🤣🤣🤣 Ladder logic is just a fancy 3way switch. Step down from that start/stop high horse. 🤣🤣🤣
@BradsWorkbench
@BradsWorkbench 6 лет назад
Lol meant no hate towards residential guys. I just think the average joe is way too intimidated by electrical work. The job is pretty simple but (and i think I say this in one of my other videos) where the residential electrician shines is his speed. Even though I know how to wire a house it will still take me longer than a guy that does it for a living. Oh and as far as the start/stop yea I agree but when you get into start/stop + forward/reverse + dual speed wye start delta run motors, it’s a little more complicated than a 3 way switch lol 👍🏼
@ronsshed886
@ronsshed886 6 лет назад
Tough Tool Reviews lol. I'm just being salty. Tired of resi work, and even worse light comercial, waiting to get out of school before making the jump to industrial.
@BradsWorkbench
@BradsWorkbench 6 лет назад
I have found it much more rewarding. Rest and commercial get boring to me. Industrial you get to play with some extremely high voltage. It made me laugh when I first heard them call 480 low voltage. Then there is learning about all the motors and installing 1000 hp motors. I’m on the maintenance side so there is always something new breaking down or problem to fix. The construction side would probably be a little more mundane pulling 500 mcm cable, etc. So I definitely would recommend going to the maintenance side of industrial work

What I do is only score about 8in of jacket then at the last inch or so I cut the jacket on the 1 side I'm scoring ( all 1 motion). Then, with your fingers you can remove the jacket and cut the jacket off with the utility blade. No worries of nicking the wires because the last inch is going to be stripped during trim out anyways. The "Romex strippers" are notorious for knicking wires in a fast pace environment during rough in and can cause shorts or cause gfis and afcis to trip after trim out. Not fun troubleshooting when u don't know what box has the knick. Saving a total of maybe an hour on an entire house is not worth the time it takes to troubleshoot 1 or more issues

If you’re talking about uf cable.. I’ll usually pull some extra, take a pair of dikes and separate each conductor. Use side cutters and another pair of pliers to pull sheathing apart. Cut off the extra you pulled and gripped to as it will probably be slightly damaged.

Dude why did you dig into the wire with the blade. That is the correct and best way. Lightly score the sheathing, then use slightly more pressure at the end of the wire so you can peel it back. Then cut of the sheathing at the back of the box. Leave a min. of 1/4”.
@BradsWorkbench

Brads Workbench I’m talking inside the box. If you know the amount of pressure needed, lightly score the sheathing with the blade on your strippers and you can pull the sheathing right off. No damage to the paper even if you know what you’re doing.

Industrial electrician explaining stripping romex? So let's assume your wire is roughed in, stapled and landed in a nail on box... Now you use your needle nose pliers to chew the insulaction off. What do you do when you knick the insulation? Pull it out and start over? Tape it up? Push it to the back of the box and hope it doesn't short out? I've found the razor knife to be quickest and cleanest. You probably would too with practice.
@BradsWorkbench
@BradsWorkbench 4 года назад
Well I definitely did not start off in the industrial setting, i've done resi, commericial, industrial, and even low voltage/communications work. This video also isnt meant for the professional. Its meant for the DIYer or beginner. Pinching and tearing the jacket is definitely much less likely to knick any of the wires than using a razor blade. Its the main way I did it myself when i first started out in resi work and never once had an issue. But that being said, if you've found a way that works for you and you're confident in it, theres nothing wrong with that. Thats also why i showed multiple ways using different tools. But in my opinion, i definitely can not recommend using a razor knife. 🤷‍♂️
@OsmarPonce
@OsmarPonce 6 лет назад
Clearly not a residential electrician. Using a razor blade is the best and fastest if done properly. Better off sticking with industrial
@BradsWorkbench

I actually did use to be a residential electrician but found it way to mundane. And I agree it probably is fast but it is definitely not something I would EVER recommend someone do. There are just so many other safer options out there, why risk it?

@himynameisjc91

Why are you even taking a chance of nicking the conductors anywhere past the very end. You can literally slice the Romex down the middle at only the last inch of the wire end. The Romex will naturally split from conductors/ground when you start peeling them apart. Then you can just cut only the Romex off when you have stripped what you need. Come on son
