In this video I discuss my strumming technique for the electric guitar.

About me:
My name is Anthony Chisnall. I'm a musician & songwriter.
My channel is these things:
1. A place to share my music - both songs and instrumental pieces. Much of the music I write features in...
2. Tutorial videos about music composition and production
3. An outlet for me to discuss all things musical - including technical break-downs of software and tools that I use, as well as more wide-ranging discussions of topics that interest me.
I play the guitar (electric, acoustic, and bass), and record all of my own synth-based sounds myself too, but I can't sing very well (huge understatement!), and so my wife, Pauline, who has a lovely singing voice, has come to my rescue. You'll hear her on all of my songs.
All of my music is written in Steinberg's Cubase (currently Cubase Pro 13).
I try very hard to make my videos PRACTICAL and no-nonsense - if I don't use a feature, I'm not going to waste your time trying to sound like an expert on it! This is the stuff I use day-to-day, so I think that's also what you'd like to hear me talking about.

Interesting topic! I've been playing for decades and usually use my fingers, partly because with _very_ dry skin I often drop plectrums, and compensate by gripping too tightly. I've tried sticking abrasive paper to them, with limited success. Recently, however, I came across Fender Mojo Grips, which are nitrile sleeves that fit over plectrums. With these, I've played whole gigs without dropping one plectrum, and without having to clench tightly. Well worth checking out. Another product is "resistance bands", used for post-operative physiotherapy/exercises. These are really thin, super-sticky rubber. I've stuck pieces off them to plectrums (with superglue), again, with great results. Regarding pick thickness: I played a dep gig with a soul/funk band a couple of months ago. One song was James Brown's "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag", and I simply could not play the fast strummed part (fifteen down/up strums on a D9). I was using a Tortex 0.71mm plectrum, and it was too thick. I ended up with a 0.5mm one, and solved the problem. It's absolutely true that the guitar's tone changes with plectrum thickness, and it became a bit weedy with the 0.5mm. Still ok, but thicker ones sound better.
