I’ve been playing for 45 years I would strongly encourage any beginner level guitar players, and combined this lesson with the caged System (they’re pretty much the same thing) It will take longer to learn to shred but the finished product will be well worth it. This is a great lesson.

Hi from London, UK! Firstly, thank you for creating such a simple, easy to follow video. I’ve been playing for 30 years and am super average having never had lessons / dedicated more time to it. I’ve pledged to get better over the coming years using RU-vid, and videos like this are so handy - thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge! Finally, keep the beard - Jerry G would no doubt look on admirably. Peace ✌🏼

This was the most helpful lesson on introductory soloing that I've ever seen/heard. I've been playing for about ten years on & off, and always struggled when it came to any premise of soloing. It was pretty much limited to randomly dancing through scale patterns. This is a great start and can't wait to start experimenting with it. Thank you!

Great beginner lesson, Ian! Once folks get this down, the next step is playing all of the chord tones for each chord in the same spot, and there are numerous spots, so there's a lot to learn, but it's doable!

I've been jamming to a few backing tracks with this and have taken a major leap forward in lead playing. I'm the rhythm guy who gets to take a solo now and then, and that's fine. But... I am soooo glad I did. There are multiple online and in-person instructors I’ve been learning from the last 5 years and I do learn from them all but you, by far, are the best at breaking things down and getting concepts across. And your passion for guitar and being creative is contagious and inspiring. Plus somehow you make it feel like we are truly in a “room” working together. So as I started watching this, I was thinking this wasn't going to be useful because it was kind of simple. Then I sat down with some tracks and it was really helpful. THEN I started connecting this concept to triads i have been working on the D, G, and B strings and it really clicked. It's not always just the concept alone, but when things start to relate to one another, that is a real breakthrough for me!

I’m a singer/songwriter/frontman who started in open tuning. Have wrote some great rock n roll tunes on there. Even some ballads. Have relied on other people for gigs & recording the music because I’ve always wanted to stay in “my lane”. Around December last year I fell in love with the Dead. Jerry Garcia, his playing, it’s changed my life. Was jamming with my friend and did a pretty decent solo on his standard tuning. Didn’t really know what I was doing but I’ve always had an ear I trusted & believed in. He amped me up & since then I’ve been encouraged to learn this instrument, truly. I’ve seen many teachers on RU-vid. IAN, YOU ARE SPECIAL BROTHER. In these months, I’ve soaked up this knowledge of your holy grail. I’m so proud of myself and of the journey this has been & will continue to be. Currently I’m visiting Minneapolis, going to Paisley Park tomorrow. 2 weeks ago I performed with Richie Cannata at the oldest rock n roll club in NYC(my hometown born & raised there). I HAVEN’T EVEN WATCHED THE VIDEO YET LMAO I just wanted to say thank you. Cheers to you. Cheers to your family. Glad you’re posting. And may you continue to light the way for others brother. Peace ♊️🌒🥃

All it takes is one explanation or way of teaching something and somehow it clicks. I’ve heard so many things about soloing over this and playing over that and none of it made sense because it gets cluttered and lost in the tedious process. This was a very basic but informative (huge) lesson that has opened a door that will lead to other doors and greater expand what you’ve taught here. Thank you.
