Never break your tungsten. Grind them in half and then snap it. break it, then look at it in a microscope and you'll see why.

I think one of the reasons that this method comes about is that people by the cheap diamond wheels which only work for MAYBE cutting ONE tungsten rod. If you buy the more expensive diamond wheels, it's EASY to cut tungsten, and you can do it many many times. Just my .02

I don’t have a microscope, so please tell me why.

@Eric Hinshaw Tungsten is not a ductile metal, it is amazingly brittle, if you bend it, it will 99.9% fracture along its axis. The fractures are bad for controlling the arc

@@mjktrash I appreciate the info. The day after I snapped a full pack in half and pre sharpened them.😂

@Andrew Poet All is not lost, half of your rod tips (at least) should be fine.

Couple things. 1. Some Tungstens you can break to shorten, others you will split/fracture. 2. Depending on the gas lens & flow rate, the stickout can be way longer than the cup ID. 3. For low amperage you want to use smaller electrodes like 1/16 & 0.04".

A size 8 cup is way bigger than needed for general work i always use a 5 cup. Aluminum and steel. Only for stainless i use a size 12 cup

Another way to get a few stubby tungstens is to just dip the tip on accident a bunch as you work. Everyone one will have to ground down, and you'll have a whole bunch in no time.

I just got a ck17 and a Furick stubby kit for my Millermatic 215. I'm just starting TIG. I'm a MIG master. I didn't know how the plastic bushing came off, I figured it was just pressed on, but I didn't want to mess up my new Torch prying on it if not.. Glad you made a video on it. Thx

I used to point both ends of my tungsten but I’ve jacked up both ends and it makes it tough to get out of the collet.

The best tip on this video is to grind both ends of your electrode so no more messing when you touch down to metal, it just allows a quick switch around.

2.4mm tungston wich is your 3/32 is o ly good to 3/32 steel you need 1/8 the 3.2mm tungston for anything over 150amps and that's good to 1/4inch steel at 225 some.guys will push 250 but I'd use 4mm tungston for 250amp and if your doing aluminum dosent matter the aluminum size you almost alllllll ways use the 3.2mm 1/8inch so it balls better

How far does the tungsten need to stick back into the torch?

Actually the most questions arise in the differences between the #17 & #9 torches and what does and what doesn't interchange. It's easy to find that the 17 is rated at 150 amps and the 9 is rated for 125 amps but what other parts can be use & how to identify which is for which is another story. Good video, nice quality.

You should never crack your tungsten, you should use a proper cutting tool like diamond or a cutting wheel that you use only on tungsten, cracking your tungsten will cause hairline fractures and will cause arc instibility no matter how well you grind it. Also without proper eye protection, cracking tungsten does increase your odds of getting a piece in your eye, or worse somebody elses eye, and despite having safety glasses on, the more dense the material the mare embeded it likes to become. Just a safety tip.
