Many people have to take their state Master Electrician licensing exam several times before scoring a passing grade, as a lot of states have very difficult exams. Here's what I did to prepare myself for my exam, and how I passed it on my first attempt.
If you're getting ready to take your exam, I've got timed, simulated practice exams for Residential Wireman, Journeyman, and Master Electrician. Click here:

If you're at all like me, you were nervous as hell when it came time to take your state exams. Or if you haven't taken them yet...dude...we all get you. We were scared too. Even those of us who were extremely prepared. I've taken all of the exams, and every time I had nervousness. Each time, however, I took my time, studied the material ahead of time, and passed the exam.
Now to study for your Master Electrician exam...that's a whole different beast lol. I studied for a year before I took the exam. I knew that there would be a definite step up from the Journeyman exam, and I wanted to pass the Master on my first attempt. I knew to do this meant I'd have to study my ass off and scrub through all the literature, magazines, videos, podcasts, and practice exams that I could get my hands on.
I spent a lot of time creating sample problems based off of problems I got from books and magazines like Mike Holt's stuff, and EC&M. I studied at least an hour every day...for a year. Believe it or not, I even studied on my honeymoon. Ya bro...I was serious about this. And it ended up working out in my favor. I passed my first time. I recommend getting your hands on anything and everything you can for studying.
I have a list of books I've read on my website. Https://www.electricianu.com/books - I also recommend getting a subscription to EC&M magazine for all of the code articles that are in there. Buy some of Mike Holt's books, listen to Paul Abernathy's podcast @Masterthenec and maybe even take some courses from him to help study code. Take my simulated practice exams www.electricianu.com/practice..., buy books like DeWalt's practice exam book...do everything you can think to do. Then, when you think you're ready...you will be. Take the test. And you know what, if you fail...it doesn't mean you're not ready...so many more people fail than pass. Just means you have a little more studying to do, and then you just need to try again.

The DeWalt practice book is awesome. That’s the only book I studied and I passed my journeyman exam the first time. Learned so much from it. But I wouldn’t just do the tests. Whatever questions I got wrong, I made sure I reviewed the methodology used to get the correct answer to make sure I got the concept.

@@chrisb8870 it’s all very close to the questions you will be asked. The most important thing is understanding the methods used to get the correct answer. Also, make sure you have tabbed your code book because it saves a lot of time when you’re searching for a code article.

Failed my test rhe first time by 1 point. That was a steel toe kick to the crotch! Passed it by a mile second time around. Test is all about how well can you navigate the book. Id highly recommend taking a prep class. The instructors know what's coming and know how to prepare you accordingly. Strategy taught to me was when given the test go through it and only answer the basic questions you know off the top of your head. Second time around answer the ones your confident you know exactly where to find the answer. Leave all calculations to the end remember all questions hold the same point value but some can take 1 min some can take 30 mins. Never leave a blank answer. If you have to just guess it can't hurt you. Also take alot of practice test the more your immersed in code the better off you will be.

I've done a lot of technical exams over the years, and I've found that practice exams are one of the most valuable parts of the preparation process. Even from the beginning, when I know that I don't know enough, taking practice exams helps get my head into the wording of the questions and answers. Then, as I gain information, it has a framework to fit into. Later, as I get closer to ready, taking a variety of practice exams will show me where I'm weak and need more effort. I've never failed, although there were a few close calls. I'm not a very good student either. But practice works. The coaches that pissed us off as kids weren't wrong.

17 years ago was 2003, the State of Texas TDLR took over jurisdiction from the local cities around that time. If I can remember they grandfathered and issued A bunch of licenses without requiring A test, as long as you had your hours in the trade. Still a lot of licensed electricians in Texas who never tested.
@Ephesians-ts8ze
@Ephesians-ts8ze 2 года назад
@@TexasCardShark that is true. The stipulation if I remember right was that you could grandfather in as a master if you could account for 20,000 hours working in an unincorporated area. To me it was a slap in the face to every electrician who was ambitious enough to take the masters test. There are lots of so-called master electricians in TX that probably couldn’t pass a journeyman test. I grandfathered based on that I had already taken the test adopted by the TDLR as the state testing agency (formerly known as SBCCI). But with the broad spectrum of professions that the TDLR provides licensing for (electricians, barbers, midwives, auctioneers, massage therapists, etc.) it’s obvious the state licensing program was just a money and power grab

Learning massachusetts codes and national codes, circut theory, electrical machine, and electrical safety. I been a industrial maintenance mechanic for 14 years..mostly in the manufacturing machines and systems. I know I will require a minimum of 4 years in the field hands on training under the supervision of a master electrician.. I already have a little bit of knowledge in industrial electrical systems like, motor controls, relays switches, automation, servos motors, plc, ac and dc power, three and two phase. But i know I still have alot more to learn. I can't wait to go for my exam and get my license. I'm also getting 2000 hours of credit. In massachusetts the requirement is 8000 hours before being eligible for state exam. I will be going thru all your contents so I can learn a few things to help me out on this journey..its my dream to become a license electrician. my background is in industrial maintenance mechanic combining that experience with a electrical license, will open alot of new doors and apportunities. Man, you are great with all techniques. You put together great study guide for yourself. I only had 2 weeks to learn before my PMMI Industrial electricity 1 test. Test is on Monday with crush course I received from my Apprenticeship. I am freaking out about it. Language in books and language on the test completely off. I wish someone put some kind of short learning practice for it somewhere. Thank you for your video.

Dude I just passed my test, first try in NJ, i watched this video 2 years ago and I told myself this was out of my league. 5 months ago I got the mike holt exam prep book. Tom Henry calculations book, and I took an exam prep course. 5 months of studying 2 hours per day. I got 93% on NEC test 78 on fire alarm test and 74 on business test. PSI allowed me double time as well with a simple doctor's note saying I have a hard time concentrating under time restraints. 26 years old and a licensed electrical contractor in NJ. Watching your videos definitely gave me the confidence to take that test so thank you sir.

I just registered to take my nj exam on march 27th. Ive heard about the double time with the doctors note. Who do you have to send the note to? And will it change my day that i already have scheduled?

Great advice i have 18 years working in the field with no classes just taught by the old guys on the job. The mike holt code prep course (16 weeks 4 hours a week) helped me alot in being able to find the code not only know the code. I go take my masters test Saturday time to put all the hard work to work.

You have some great videos and these are very helpful getting prepped for testing. I was wondering if you have any advice on preparing for C-10 Electrical Contractors exam. What you did to prepare and how different it is from master electrician exam.
