I think the best blue with black is a deep royal blue. Probably 40 years ago I saw a very fashionable friend of my mom's wearing a dark royal blue and black color block sheath dress with black sheer hose and high heels. Stunning. I don't like dark navy with black, the blue has to be lightened up for it to work.

One morning, when I was living in NYC, I literally got dressed for an event in the dark. I didn't realize until I arrived at the event that I wore a black dress, black heels and NAVY tights. I was horrified and had a terrible time. I thought of taking off the tights, but it was freezing. I now keep all my navy and black completely separate. I write B or N in Sharpie on the label of my tights. Never again, lol.

That’s happened to me, too. Fortunately, there was a pharmacy in the building that sold some tights, so I bought a black pair and changed. I still sometimes end up with one black and one navy sock, I wish they would make navy a little lighter so I can tell the difference, before I go out!

Personally I love this color combination but when I do it I usually wear a thin heel strappy in teal. It looks great and I always get compliments. The small pop of teal just balances the deep colors

Navy and black is one of my favorite combos - I especially loved Dakota Fanning’s outfit. I love dark colors together - brown and black as well, charcoal and pine green, etc. Dark color combos - in cool tones, my preference - feel mysterious and soothing to me.

I think black is a diva and navy blue is a diva and both on one stage can be difficult. And for me it is also difficult to combine both colours. With jeans it works for me. Maybe it has to do with the material of denim.

At the risk of sending too many comments.....lol....I think the reason your black dress didn't work with your navy silk trench is because your (exposed) legs break up the color scheme, if you know what I mean. The long black trousers provided a column of black so the jacket was highlighted. Also, the safari style of the jacket lends itself better to trousers than a dress, as despite having a dressy sheen, is casual in style. My 2 cents worth!

One of my favourite outfits is black jeans and navy/indigo cotton sweater. (Both are very slightly naturally "washed".) An artist friend commented that it triggered a pleasant "vibration". I certainly feel wonderful wearing the combination.

In my opinion it did not work with the dress because of the nude of the legs. Wearing black opaque tights would make the outfit similar to rhe one with the black trousers. Love your FCL channel.

Yes navy and black seem to work when there is a greater contrast of colour. There is a better balance when you wear the short blue silk jacket with the black top and trousers; it looks purposefully put together whereas when you wear a blue jacket with the black dress the jacket looks like an afterthought; there is no ‘flow’ to the outfit. I like Victoria Beckham’’s outfit too except I don’t like the bag. I can’t see it properly but it looks like she is carrying her collection of vinyl records! Her frame is very petite and I don’t think the bag works for her. Might have better carrying a small briefcase if she is carrying work items. Thanks for a very interesting video. DONE.

The electric/cobalt/royal blue with black was very popular in the 80s. I remember wearing a dress in that blue with a black blazer and accessories. I agree, Pippa’s outfit works. You have such a great eye, I doubt I’ll disagree on any of your yesses or nos.

i prefer the navy if its not too black and has a texture or shine to it. i had a navy polo neck with silver flecks that i liked wearing with black trousers. i think mat navy and mat black feels too heavy to look at. i liked the small dash of silver to break it up, reminds me of the inky blue black night sky and stars then.

I finally bought the navy silk trench coat from Lilysilk. It looks a feels beautiful! There is nothing like it in the shops. Fantastic for spring, summer and travel, so lightweight and it will elevate any outfit! I am surprised they haven't made it in more colours.

Thanks for this video 😊 I adore navy and black! It adds an extra dimension and depth to a dark neutral outfit; however, I don't like the electric/royal blue and black - it's too 80's for me. I love VB's outfit - so chic. 😍 I think the dress would work better if black tights were worn - I think nude tights almost give an extra 'colour' to the outfit. Navy and black work well but only those two colours together maybe?

I agree that the navy should be lighter and not so dark that it’s almost black. I also think the ratio of black to navy is important so that one doesn’t overwhelm the other. For example in your outfit there is a large portion of black with the top and slacks and the navy trench is almost an accent.

The silk trench worked with the pants outfit because the fabric textures were complementary. You mentioned lighter navy blues going better with black; I like dark navy with charcoal. Also, I was thinking that your red tweed jacket would look fantastic dressed down or up with black or navy.

DONE. This was a great video. Personally I like navy with black but I agree that not all shades of navy are great. There has to be sufficient contrast. With respect to your navy blue trench coat outfits, I did prefer it with the trousers more than the dress. For me it was because with the dress the proportions or ratio were too equal. With the trouser outfit, the trousers (being long) and top were a higher ratio than the trench coat and therefore created more of a visual difference. I hope that makes sense. It is interesting to see that the same trench coat doesn't quite go with a black dress but goes with a black shirt and trousers. I think it might be the complete column of black color balances out the trench coat more than the shorter dress. Thanks for another great video. :)

I have been wearing black sweaters, shirts and blazers with jeans for forever. I love the look and think it is very sophisticated. There is always a good contrast, even with the darker wash jeans. In terms of other clothing pieces, it really depends on the contrast between the blue and the black, so I think we should think about pairing different shades of blue (not just navy) with different textures with black. Sometimes an outfit that is just so-so may be lacking in both contrast and proportion. IMHO, proportion is a critical element of sophisticated style.

For me, combining colors evokes a feel or mood. If I want a formal or business feel, I may shy away from certain color combinations that feel casual. If I am looking for something playful or casual I will steer away from the color combinations I associate with a more serious mood.

Done. Syling navy with black is tricky. I think Brigitte Macron always does it well. I wear a black turtelneck and a a navy blue tunic together in winter. It works because of the different textures the tunic is satin, the turtelneck is cotton. My favourite outfit is the combniation navy blazer with black dress and of course VB.

DONE. Navy blue is my new neutral. Not that I've not worn blue or navy blue in the past. There was just more black in my wardrobe before. I like that navy blue is seasonless, especially when used with white. My first Lilysilk purchase included a sleeveless button down navy silk blouse and a sleeveless navy silk shirt dress. I think what I have learned from you in previous videos, that this video highlights for me, is that texture and sheen make a difference.

People in the U.S. don't usually pair black and navy. Men will wear black shoes with navy pants/suit. It's actually a very difficult color combination to full off. I think it's much easier to wear a royal blue and black or a medium blue with a slight texture, such as a heather texture or shine. I think I know why your black pants and top work with the navy jacket. The eye scans the black from head to toe and registers "black". Then, the eye sees a different texture and a navy with a sheen to it. Now, the eye sees a black outfit with a textured shiny fabric which just happens to be navy. It's more harmonious to the eye and easier for the eye to read the outfit as "contrasting". Not as much black shows when wearing the dress with the navy jacket, so the eye is interrupted and tries to adjust to what is navy and what is black.

I went to a wedding years ago, I wore a dress that was a black and lighter shade of navy, I also,wore a necklace that had both those colors entwined together , with black heels, I received many compliments, I just think you can wear black and blue as long as it’s not a very dark navy

Navy and black are 2 dominant colours. If you want to wear them together you need to Be conscious of the contrast, tones of the blue (ie which tone is more dominant the black or the orange which is mixed with pure blue) and fabric. If more black is mixed in with the pure blue it will not work as well as there will be little to no contrast.

Interesting about the black and navy I only heard about that recently, apart from jeans and black. I have a pair of dark blue boots. They wouldn't look right with a black dress I don't think but I can wear them with jeans and a black top or with a blue dress. So long as the outfit looks deliberate, with the right accessories you won't look like you got dressed in a hurry in the dark.

You definitely need a bigger contrast between the blue and black. Some shades of "navy" blue are so close to black you don't notice until you're very close. My mum always says it's better to have a contrast than a bad match when it comes to colours. A cobalt or peacock/electric blue would be a very good contrast as you can see the shape of both garments.

Hi Marie-Anne, I would like to comment on the outfit with black trousers and navy trench coat. For me it works because the length of the coat elongated your legs and the coat also accentuates your waist and you look fabulous!

it is less strong, the second with pants, it has to do with the line of the dress which shortens visually. I like this for sure! I would look great in this outfit.

I think the outfit near the end with the sheen of the blue trench coat works because the sheen reflects light to create dynamic patterns of many different subtle tones within its particular hue of blue. Were it not for the shimmering effect, the outfit would not "sing," because there would not be sufficient contrast between the blue top and black slacks to attract the eye. The black in its stability and purity of tone is a perfect foil for the kaleidoscope of rippling blues. The top is also beautifully cut, but it's the fabric's surface movement that makes the outfit radiant.

I need to add that I believe more of a color contrast between the coat and the other garments would have made the outfit too busy. The dynamic light play of the sheen of the coat is just enough to capture attention, so black, the absence of color is probably the only choice that would properly set off the ordinarily closely-related dark blue.

I think you hit the nail on the head about contrast!👍👍👍👍. I don’t think the VB outfit goes. Not enough contrast for me, but I think you in the black dress with the navy jacket goes because there are your legs for contrast. But the same with the black trousers is not enough contrast for me. But in all honesty I think you are one of these women that, as the saying goes in the UK ‘would look good in a bin bag’. Meaning some women have the ability to style anything in an amazing way! I too favour VB's outfit. I think she carries the large bag to make her seem even smaller, as they say a larger person should carry a larger bag. She could not be any more petite... Thank you for introducing me to Lilysilk. The garments are beautiful, and very reasonably priced in comparison to many other high end designers.

Marie-Anne, I have always liked navy and black together but I do think it’s the contrast of the colors with style and fabric of the garments contributing to if it goes together or no, as well. The trench coat ( which was stunning) looked ok with the dress but fabulous with the pants! I think the contrast of the long line of black from the pants helped with that. The juxtaposition of the amount of black and navy plays a great deal into why it goes together so well in some outfits versus others, in my opinion. Loved this video, it makes me think and analyze my own closet! ❤️

I struggle with wearing navy and black together. I've heard growing up that the two colors do not go well together. This video was very helpful. However, I have to say that I loved the look of the black dress with the navy Lilysilk trench coat. I thought it looked very chic and elegant.

I have just bought a pair of navy blue trousers and teamed it with a black camisole and a Lilysilk short sleeved navy blouse. The lace on the camisole peeking out of the blouse looked much better than I would have thought. For my eye it is either an accent of black/navy or reflective quality of the pieces of how this works - light plays a big part in colour perception for me. Very good topic I like to banish my preconceptions.

Love the VB outfit, as well as yours. Isn’t it interesting how denim is so versatile! I love the sheen of the silk, navy trench coat with the black skirt! Could you pull the two together in a scarf tied onto a neutral bag?

Done! Hello! I do not usually wear navy blue and black. Except for jeans, so this was helpful. I never knew how to style it. I liked the electric blue dress with the black coat, it popped out. Also the black and blue outfit with the bag that brought it together. Your outfit at the end with sheen looked good. The other outfits I wouldn't personally do.

I think the pants worked with the navy trench because it was a continuous expanse of black. The dress showed your skin, so it was like adding another color/adding a contrast to the black making the trench look “off”. Not sure if I explained this well. DONE.

My favourite was Pippa’s outfit. I agree with you, you need a contrast somewhere. Either a lighter navy or a different sheen to the fabric.

DONE I like the Pippa Middleton and Victoria Beckham looks as well. I think the black with navy must look very intentional with everything else exactly right in line and proportion. If it looks like they weren't paying attention to what they put on (perhaps appearing to mistake the navy for black...in the Dakota Fanning look as the example) then for me, it doesn't work.
