What way do YOU usually use when you substitute yarn in a project? Please share your experience in dealing with yarn substitution. Thank you :-)

10rowsaday There’s a website, if allowed I can share the url here. I refer to it but I don’t think it helps me much because of my inexperience and constant self doubt, but it might in time and maybe others too. Thank you for sharing this information.

I am hoping I can substitute worsted weight yarn in a pattern that calls for DK. Is this possible?
@10rowsaday
@10rowsaday 3 года назад
@@CMorin-qj1on It depends on the yarn. Both "worsted" and "DK" is a range of thicknesses. It is safer to rely on the method explained in this tutorial then the system of yarn weights.

Exactly what I am looking for. I am knitting for the first time in years and am trying to match a pattern to the wool I want to buy. This is amazing information. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I was looking at the gauge in each yarn when comparing. So I was off. I have to find my gauge for any yarn that I use. Thank you, thank you, thank you.!!!!

Irish you would have gone further into substitutions with different weight yarn (like two strands of fingering equals ? Two strand sport equals?

Great suggestion, Dianne. I'll make a separate tutorial about it one day. Thank you :-)

Hello just wondering I knitting squares can I use 4ply and 8ply seperately .
@10rowsaday
@10rowsaday Год назад
Hello Maureen. The number of plies is not as important as the yardage in a certain number of grams / ounces. Here's a tutorial with more details about this method - www.10rowsaday.com/substitute-yarn Happy knitting :-)

Hi I am in NZ the wool I have is 8ply.however the crochet beanies I want to do is 10ply, how many extra stitches would I need to do??
@10rowsaday
@10rowsaday 3 года назад
Hi Amelia. As explained in this tutorial, do not rely on the name of the yarn (8 ply, 10 ply, Sport weight, DK weight, etc.) because the thickness of the yarn within the same group differs a lot. It is better to look at the yardage. You'll find more details about this approach in the full tutorial at www.10rowsaday.com/substitute-yarn

What about plies? Could a pattern using a single ply acrylic be done with a 4 Ply 100% wool?
@10rowsaday
@10rowsaday 3 года назад
Plies are irrelevant. If you follow the steps outlined in this tutorial, you'll be able to easily substitute yarns. Happy knitting!

Thank you! I agree with Dianne -- would it be possible for you to do a video on substituting different weights of yarn? Such as a pattern calls for DK weight but all I have is worsted -- how would the subsitution work? Thanks again!!

Believe it or not, I've had that tutorial on my to-do list for quite some time. I keep postponing it because it involves some math and I don't want to add more complications to your knitting life :-) On the other hand, it IS quite handy to know how to convert yarns, so I'll probably take a chance and make that tutorial despite the risk of boring you with the calculations :-)

I am faced with the same problem. Most RU-vid and Google answers I found were about substituting the yarn but it's the same weight. I'm trying to make a fingerless glove that's knitted in Sport Yarn(Malabrigo Arroyo) but for reasons(can't buy) I only have Fingering/Sock Yarns in my home. So now I'm wondering if I should just add 2 more stitches since the gauges seem to only have a 2 stitch difference

How would you substitute unique yarns?
@10rowsaday
@10rowsaday 4 года назад
Hi Alicia. When it comes to unique yarns, substitution could be tricky. These yarns usually create an unusual texture or colourway. When we use basic yarns instead, this effect is lost entirely. It seems that the best way to substitute a unique yarn is to use some other unique yarn. The project will most likely look very different than the project featured in the pattern, but at least, you'll keep the "uniqueness" of it. Happy knitting :-)

what about the weight of the yarn???
@10rowsaday
@10rowsaday 5 лет назад
When using the method described in this tutorial, the name of yarn weight is not relevant. Look for the fibre content and the actual length of yarn (in meters or yards) in the actual weight (in grams or ounces).
