This is great. Can you show me how you would work out if the fraction being subtracted is bigger than the fractional part of the mixed number. I.e. if it crosses the whole, is there a method?

Well .. in this case you can just ignore the 4 because 3/4 is smaller than 9/10 which means that the answer is going to be 4 something. 9/10 - 3/4 = 36/40 - 30/40 = 6/40 = 3/20 answer 4 3/20 A harder question would be 4 3/4 - 9/10 = ?
