Kathryn 'Kay' Reynolds in the middle as 'Miss Smith aka Smitty'. She was pushing 40 when they filmed this and looked good even next to 25 year old Michelle Lee!

You make it sound like "pushing 40" is over the hill and a long ways off from 25 when really it's only 15yrs. It's not like Kay was pushing 50 or 60. lol

I searched her up, apparently she was born in 1951 and this movie came out in 1967. She wasn’t pushing 40, she would have been...a teenager at the time. Unless if her birthdate as shown on google is incorrect...she would have been quite young at the time then.

It made $6.3 million. Not sure of the budget. Nowhere near the success of the play (which was hugely successful and won a Pulitzer and many Tonys), but as many have pointed out, the climate changed a lot from the early 1960s to when the film was released in 1967.

If the film version had kept all the songs from the original show and the dances, that made it a smash hit - it might have had a chance - but they dropped them. It flopped because everyone who had loved the show were mightily disappointed in the film. They didn't actually make a film of it, they just put the camera in front of the actors and hoped for the best. It was screaming out for a director who knew what to do with stage material, but they didn't have one, sadly, and it bombed.
