Let’s delve in to the care of a species who has been for the longest time given an unfair reputation of being impossible to keep - Oxymonacanthus longirostris.
I’ll go over finding the right specimen, weaning on to prepared aquarium foods, generall feeding and other requirements.

Helfrichi firefish would look cool in this tank. These filefish are def a dream fish of mine. Can't wait to get some in the future.

That’s something I’ve been considering. Just need a lid for the tank before taking the plunge.

Hello! I have been keeping Oxymonacanthus for more than three years, they can be fattened for artemia and weaned from eating acropores. They can safely live in a mixed reef, in a soft reef. And there are corals both hard and soft to which they are completely indifferent

Funnily enough my guys hardly look at frozen foods. I try every day but they just go “where the hell are the pellets dude” 🤣

That is amazing.. I was wondering if this applies to other fish like butteflies and Moorish idol..!
@viking_reefing

Idols are fairly easy to feed, their challenge is different. This would definitely work with coralivore butterflies though.

I kept one for a cpl yes feeding it clams, oysters, and other shellfish from grocery store. It was a ravenous clam eater. Including tridacnas, w is how I discovered they WD eat shellfish.
@viking_reefing

Damn! That’s one way to find out lol. I’ve planned some clams for this tank…we’ll see how that works out.

They are cool fish. What about some seahorses? Get some gorgonians. With it being a low flow reef

Indeed the are! Actually not a huge fan of sea horses. I will however get an assortment of pipefish and some gorgonians :)

Well as we don’t have the same lights my direct schedule won’t help much but I run my whites at 65-100% throughout the day :)

What is mastic? Around here mastic refers to the crystalized sap of the mastic tree (an evergreen). It is ridiculously expensive and I doubt that a filefish would eat it. Is that what you used?

No, definitely not. However, I wouldn’t recommend buying fish that you can’t inspect in person at all if you can help it. Just sounds risky to me

Ok so you just got some unhealthy fish. Because orange spotted file fish are farley easy to keep. I had mine eatting flake food and brine shrimp.
@viking_reefing
@viking_reefing 10 месяцев назад
I’d say you are mistaken in that based on most people’s experience with them..if you are referring to oxymonacanthus longirostris. The success rate with this species is extremely low. However, it’s great that you got a pair that were super easy but that’s not the norm.
