How to SUP Surf - PADDLE SWITCH CUTBACKS

I went the first 6 years of SUP surfing without ever doing this maneuver and simply keeping the paddle on my toeside. I won 7 SUP Surf contests without ever performing a single paddle switch and still before I could even think of performing this move with confidence, in or out of a contest jersey.
Also known as the 'cross bow' or something like that, the frontside paddle switch cutback has become a mandatory progression point for the advanced SUP surfer. Adding this to my repertoire has increased variation on my waves exponentially, and most importantly, it is SO FUN when done properly!
I broke the paddle switch down into 3 categories or 3 variations: the down carve, the roundhouse cutback, and the tailslide.
Drop a comment!!! Let me know what you think and what you would like to see in the future HOW TO SUP SURF episodes! Thank you everyone!

Thank you for working on this video.....as a beginner to SUP Surfing, this helps a lot. I have watched this several times now... but when in the ocean, I cannot seem to remember all these moves. Your frontside cutback reentry switch is pro level.....like Ben Carpentier.....or Keahi. Good Job, Mahalos 🤙🤙

Aloha Stanton! Always appreciate your feedback, the kind words, and the video watches!!! Beniot and keahi are definitely the flow masters, stoked be even around their level! Remembering the moves just comes with time and seeing that similar section over and over and over again! Grind it!!! Yewwwwww

I was also watching it again and I was like, no no no don't hit the beer at 1:22 and 2:15 but luckily nothing happened (otherwise you maybe didn't post it) anyway love the content, I been watching it now for the 3rd time so really nice, keep it grooving. What I really like was your example of the #APP guy on Instagram, it was easy to find what you meant. My preference would be for a next how-to is maybe foot placement for turning, you're one step ahead for me to explain the turns and I'm just checking where my back foot needs to be every time for every turn. If you could break that down would be so cool, like the how-to "dropping in late"! Maybe it's a big step but you could also make a how-to do an air on a SUP (that will do for a lot of hits on RU-vid), like the air you did in the pool that you also posted on Instagram and on of you latest vids, but that won't be usable for me but just cool to see. Cheers Levon

Nice! Agree that it's overused for sure. But when it works, it works. Best one I ever saw was Bullet Obra at the 2018 Backdoor Shootout final. Threw a big snap, and was on the paddle so hard, I thought it was going to snap :-) Next you need to do a tutorial on where to put the paddle when in the barrel. I think it's one of the most challenging things with SUP... I see most people keep in on the toe side, regardless of frontside or backside. I feel that I can't rotate my shoulders open like on a shortboard if you have to keep both hands on the same side, so I mostly hold it on the heel side. Works, but it's not what I see most people doing, so you wonder if you're missing something.
@Twonicles
@Twonicles 3 года назад
when it works, it works!!!! Bullet is the man. Probably top 10 sup surfers / free surfers of all time. So underrated. Yea definitely still figuring out backside tube on sup. I don't get too many looks for rights around here. But I've seen a lot of techniques for that and wave size is definitely the determinant for which approach you can take.

Hey Anthony, What fin setup do you recommend for the tail slide? (Twin / Thruster /Quad)? Also, do you rocker smaller than normal fins for it?
@Twonicles
@Twonicles 3 года назад
I only ride quad fins when I sup surf!!! I use Futures fins, and I currently ride the Eric Arakawa quad set.

yo thanks alot for these. Can we talk about what you can do on crap waves to build skills, as I surf in Queens, NY where they rarely get to the level of San-O bad-wave-days. I get out alot in these crap waves, but I want to be ready when that hurricane swell comes in. Also, maybe a little more talk about what you do with your feet for the balance transfer.
@Twonicles
@Twonicles 3 года назад
Thank you Sean! always appreciate your feedback!!! I like the idea, makes sense to me. It is very small here now, with some windswell, so would be perfect to film. Some ideas for the video instantly came to mind. let's just call the video 'making the most of small waves' or something like that haha

Hey, I love your videos! I've been SUP surfing for about a year. I'm not the strongest paddler in the world, and I'm goofy foot, so I was having trouble getting rights. So, I started paddling into them with my left foot forward so I could paddle hard on the toe side. The problem is, I'm uncoordinated with my left foot forward so I often blow my bottom turn. Sometimes I paddle in left foot forward and then switch feet so I can make the bottom turn. Should I stick with that or just practice with regular foot to improve my coordination?
@Twonicles
@Twonicles 3 года назад
Thank you John!!! To clarify, you are trying to paddle into every wave frontside? So you are paddling for rights switch stance?
@jpdunham1
@jpdunham1 3 года назад
@@Twonicles Maybe I'm using the vocabulary wrong. I'm trying to paddle into every wave paddling on my toe side.
@jpdunham1
@jpdunham1 3 года назад
So, I paddle into rights with my left foot forward and lefts with my right foot forward.
@Twonicles
@Twonicles 3 года назад
@@jpdunham1 seems like you are 100% correct on lefts, but are getting off balance on rights? I always have my right foot forward both lefts and rights

Can you give a lesson on paddling into waves backside? I'm goofyfoot and seem to always catch my waves paddling on my left side even though it's more difficult to look down the wave ...catching waves paddling on my right side feels awkward, is that normal?
@Twonicles
@Twonicles 3 года назад
@@chrismonteros206 chris my last how to video has a few backside drop in clips. That may help you a bit. Backside sup surfing is always going to be a bit awkward. No matter what level you are at, front side will always provide a slight advantage when paddle surfing.
