thank you for this video. You really give me confidence and inspiration to learn as much as I can leading up to a rotation this spring. I especially appreciated your tip on doing some self-guided research to then bring back to my instructor for further discussion.

I’m so happy!!! I really hope you love your rotation, just try to enjoy it and learn as much as you can, but also be patient with yourself. We’re all learning, all the time.

I've known I wanted to be a CHT since since day one of my Masters in OT. Monday starts my 2nd level 1 in hands and then in January I have a level 2 in hands. I'm so excited! I bought the purple book already and have been reviewing it

Thank you so much for making this video! I will be completing my first level II placement in a hand clinic this summer, and I just purchased Cynthia Cooper's book. I am so excited to start! I'm a little worried about how much anatomy/physiology I should be learning as a FW student...how deep into the anatomy would you recommend for a student to be looking into? Also, I'm wondering about being in a situation with a client and they begin asking questions that I don't know an answer to...I want to be as confident as possible and help them get the answers they need, but how do you handle a situation like that? Any advice?

First of all, congratulations!! That's so awesome - I hope you love your fieldwork! Second, you are not alone in that worry - I struggled with that so much during Fieldwork. I definitely think that I could have known more anatomy going in, but you will definitely start to pick things up as you go (and your clinical instructor should be able to help facilitate your learning and growth). In answering questions for patients that I don't know (I still follow this today, because there's still a lot that I don't know!), I'm honest with them. I'll tell them what I know about their question, and then if I don't know the root of the answer, I'll tell them that I'm not exactly sure, or that the question may be better answered by their doctor. Depends on what it is, of course. You just never want to do harm, so you don't want to give someone information that isn't correct and could hurt them. Sometimes if it's something that I don't know but could easily do research about, I'll tell the patient "That's a great question! I want to be sure I'm giving you the right information, can I look into that and let you know?" and usually they're really happy about that. Then I can do some research and get the right answer next time I see them. But lean on your CI, as well - they should be there to help!
