Part one of my comprehensive guide on how to do your best to survive Rush/Glowflies in Salmon Run!
This advice is mostly tailored towards Freelance games but also has stuff that will help you overall, regardless if Freelancing or Squadding. The point of this video is to help those who are struggling or those who are newer to the game, so high end min/max stuff has not been included, unless where relevant.
In the second video, I will discuss specials, strategies, meeting quota, surviving, managing this wave in Freelance and wall-clinging/stalling.

CORRECTION: Firstly, tysm for the response to the video! I’m so glad people have found it helpful. I’ve just been notified by some lovely players in the community about a mistake I’ve made during the Funamentals part of the video. In the video, I state that aggro isn’t affected by special use. Whereas this is actually wrong and was changed in a patch, a while ago, I had just never personally had it affect me nor saw it documented anywhere else. There was a patch some time ago that changed the way enemies aggro your landing spot from the Inkjet. My understanding of this was that it affected every wave type EXCEPT for Rush, however I’ve now seen footage of this extending to Rush. What this basically means is that if you are targeted when your inkjet FINISHES, the aggro will leave you and change to a different player, regardless of the timer. This works the same way for all waves. This doesn’t affect Booyah, strangely. In regular waves, you can force enemies off of you with Booyah but during Rush, they will remain targeting you unless the timer is due to switch. So apologies for the small misinformation there - it’s quite something for me to miss, actually. I will mention this in a bit more depth in Part Two as I will have a section about special usage in Rush and will show a clip provided by Sadface as an example. If there is anything else I may have gotten wrong, please let me know! It’s a testament to how much depth there is in this mode that it’s possible to miss stuff, even if you think you’ve done all the research 😅

I forgot how at launch, Booyah bomb and Inkjet used to be the reefslider of SR 😭 Meaning you would get immediately killed during of right after you used ine of those specials, lowering incredibly the mileage you get by using those. Steel eels and rush waves felt so unfair. Man, QOL updates are lifesavers, literally 🫡 Inkjet went from okay to amazing with that patch. Booyah change conditons during rush must be the same for Maws, which means no possibility lol Unless you've made an oopsie, anyone would launch their bomb once they're not targeted,,, Great guide btw!! I love how it takes on weapon roles. Would love to hear about egg running in Pt2 :)

Oh my god, yess. My thoughts exactly with sock eye station. Stay away from the spiral! My teams will lose from not hitting quota bc they cling to the spiral. It’s a trap.

depending on my freelance team, putting them on the hill makes it easier for them to comfortably manage ink and get the eggs that land on the safer upper area. I usually test it by staying near the basket and if people start dropping I move to the spiral and call people up. While this doesn't get me alotta eggs it DOES let me meet quota and for the most part with freelance that's all that matters to me

if the glowflies telegraphed which player they were going to target next (maybe even a timer can you imagine) the wave would be so much more bearable imo

Such a simple but much needed change. Like, just put a single fly directly above the head of the player who is about to gain aggro or something. With how hectic the wave can be, it really needs a mechanic like that.

THank you for being a Salmon Run Splatuber that actually acknowledges that Rush waves is heavily flawed! It feels like most of the time when a Splatuber talks about this wave they dismiss the criticisms people have about the wave and just go "git gud". The only opinion I disagree with pertains to Bonerattle Arena. Not only is that the map where I have the best success with Rush waves, but I find the rail strat works amazing as long as you rotate rails. Basically, if you find the glowflies swarming around you, I recommend going to the rail opposite the one the previous player was at, allowing two players to gather eggs while you throw bombs and the other player shoots them. This strat works 9 out of 10 times I used it, as a freelancer mind you. The only time it didn't work was when a teammate refused to use the inkrail and tried to hug the wall everytime they got surrounded by the glowflies.

Rush is very broken, will speak more about that in part two for sure. It just fundamentally doesn’t work the way it’s intended and all you have to do is look at the wave in S2 to see. That’s interesting that you’ve had better success with Bonerattle Rush, I’m glad to hear it! It really has been 50/50 for me and not a particularly fun experience either. I’ve found that players haven’t noticed when I’ve tried to steer the enemies away to allow for egg running or they just hang at basket and do nothing but hold ZR. I also didn’t want to include any of that footage in case it came across like I was targeting random players cause that’s not what I wanna do at all. But yeah I have seen some plays on this map. The good news I suppose is that the more players that do it, the more other players will see and hopefully it’ll become a recognised thing that’s done well.

Minor note for Bonerattle, if you’re stalling on the rail, moving back and forth on the rail even just a little tends to stop the chums jumping up and smacking you out of the rail

Figure I'd at least give my take on a strat for Rush on Bonerattle Arena: I personally have found the most success by rotating between two different stalling locations. The first is on the short ink rail that extends from the low middle platform (where two different corners offer single-bomb Flyfish kills in other waves) and up towards the basket. The second is on the long ink rail by the grates and up near the basket. There are two that match that description, but the one I'm referring to is within view of the first stalling spot. The first stalling point is the primary one, where the aggroed player will stall with bombs and everyone else will shoot, but the reason this is the primary one is that if positioned correctly, sometimes the stalling player can still pick up eggs when a Goldie is killed, allowing them to somewhat effectively run eggs while doing the stalling job. This is technically possible on other maps with wall clinging, but I've found it to be much easier here since you can move back and forth to prevent the Chum from jumping up at you, and you don't have to constantly turn the camera. There are still several problems with sticking too closely to this stalling strat. Quota is one, but one I more often see here is that all the eggs bunch up right where the enemies are, leading to many accidental deaths while trying to run eggs. To combat this, I suggest that once enough Goldies have been killed to litter the primary spot with eggs, the targeted player should move to stall at the second spot, away from the other three. They can't pick up eggs at the second spot, but they can still bomb the enemies and allow the rest of the team to focus on running eggs for the few seconds they get while the other player is targeted. Once the targeted player is changed, the new target can use the rails and the upper area to safely rotate to the other spot, while the others keep running eggs. It's far from a perfect strategy, and overfishing is almost impossible with this, but it's all I've been able to come up with since this stage dropped. I will say that this has been effective enough to meet quota even at Hazard Level Max, but it's always close. I do agree that this is probably the worst map for both Rush and Grillers, as yes, it does seem that the only viable strategy is stalling. I don't like stalling on the other maps as anything but a last resort, and I fully agree with everything you said about people relying too much on stalling at Sockeye Station, but for Bonerattle Arena, it seems to be the only halfway decent option, at least in Freelance. Hopefully a better, more consistent strategy is developed over time. I remember back when Marooner's Bay dropped in S3, it felt like nobody knew what to do with Rush, and I was one of them. Eventually, though, the community landed on the strat you mentioned in this video, so maybe the same will happen with Bonerattle. Great work on this video! I know you've been working hard for this one, and I'm looking forward to part 2! TL/DR: Having two stalling spots and focusing on running eggs helps a lot on Bonerattle Arena, but Rush still sucks there.

Thank you! Yeah I fully agree. I’ve had no issue with Bonerattle in squads or in Freelance games with good players but (and I didn’t wanna include the footage because it might make people think I’m targeting random players, which I do not want to do at all) I’ve struggled with Rush in FL on that map for all the reasons I listed. Stalling just doesn’t work well on any map but I think with Bonerattle we simply have no choice but to do it this way due to the layout of the stage. It’s a shame because I think Bonerattle is a really solid stage for day waves but it’s night waves are laughably bad!

Great rundown, can't wait to watch the rest! I'm low-mid EVP and I notice quite a lot of people default to stalling on Gone Fission. Always a bit frustrating because I find it the most satisfying rush map when everyone uses the ramp method. Jumping to the other side to let off some of the heat always feels like a superhero move. 😆

The mention of switching Inkrails on Bonerattle's Rush is so imperative and I am glad you mentioned it. If the team uses the same rail the entire time, trying to get the eggs is a death sentence, but switching between two adjacent rails allows you downtime to get the eggs with relatively low risk. Also glad that you mentioned bombing them even while targeted on an Inkrail, that's another mistake I often see. While you didn't mention them, I believe Snatchers can also carry eggs to the basket platform, but I've found that can be hard with bomb AOE.

I’ve found the best way to play bone rattle arena FOR ME is to sit on the shortest ink rail near the left side of the map (facing where low tide would be) And constantly spamming bombs if you’re the targeted player… I think it’s prolly one of the better options because the eggs can spawn on the top or right next to the wall near basket- The downsides are- You have to assume your teammates will get eggs.. which in most cases they won’t and will be more focused on killing the chum- or sitting on the same ink rail without being targeted ☹️ I think bone rattle is great for its ability to outrun/stall the lessor salmons but absolutely terrible for egg collection. Mostly because there’s not really any way to kill the goldie’s near the basket safely.

Yeah agreed! It’s such a tricky map for Rush (and Grillers!) and as a result I don’t particularly enjoy it. But I’m hopeful that as we play the map more, the strats become more fine tuned or something better is discovered.

One of the main issues I get from Rush is that the flies get to me while I’m in midair so I’m already dead by the time I hit the ground 😭 I started to dislike the wall method when realizing how far down you had to go just to get the eggs and the popular areas tend to be narrow spots, which makes it harder to avoid the chums. It also can screw up your camera, so you don’t realize you’re targeted next when you touch the ground. I can see use for the wall cling if you want to move the chums away from the area so your team can pick up the eggs though, but I’d rather not deal with shark pits with that method the whole round.

Yeah the wall method is not ideal when you need quota. I think it’s fine after quota is met or if things are crazy but it can be really tough to meet quota when people are stalling the entire wave.

I think that glowfly rush is the wave type that was hit the hardest by the overall difficulty increase between S2SR and SRNW as it was already a difficult wave in S2 but is now even more so by the increased speed and knockback from lessers in NW

Also while I can't get empirical evidence I'm pretty sure from looking over S2 & S3 footage that chum spawn in greater numbers at once S3. Basically instead of spawning 1 or two at once it spawns 3 or 4 at equal hazard levels

I wouldn’t mind the glowfly mode as much if it was coded so that it would never appear on 1st wave. In teams of random players the first wave is usually spent getting used to how the others play.

My very first wave on Bonerattle was glowfly rush and it was right at the minute the map entered rotation so no one knew what to do. We instinctively gathered at the grate bridges and were pretty successful. Since then, I've exclusively used the inkrail method and nearly every rush wave has gone smoothly, but I will admit it's just a little boring compared to the uh honorable stand-and-fight method. Honestly I can't wait for there to be a more solid strat for bonerattle bc I don't think I've ever had night waves for rush or griller time out more on a map in freelance. Everyone always seems really confused on what to do and there's always somebody hiding in a rail all wave. I really do love playing on this map otherwise. Thanks for the video!

Awesome video! I love how in detail you go into it! I really like your note about freelance and having to adapt to strategies you don't want to play. I hate the Sockeye wall-hugging but a bunch of freelancers love it, so optimizing those strats can net you a few more ugly wins. Feel similarly about Bonerattle. Where I feel like there's gotta be a more consistent way than stalling, but that's what most everyone knows... So may as well get better at running the eggs for now. Maybe a different dominant strategy will open up later. The one thing that gets me about Marooners Bay Glowflies is that people don't wanna run eggs for some reason. It's weird. Quota was rarely a problem in Glowflies in Splatoon 2 on that map. Looking forward to Part 2!

Thank you! Yeah I really dislike stalling without good means. But I do it often in FL because it’s just the vibe of the team and sometimes you’ll have to work around that rather than against it. I’m gonna talk about Bay in Part 2! I can’t believe how easy it was in S2 in comparison lol the mode is so much more buggier now that the one thing Bay had going for it is now questionable at best.

Something about this wave definitely needs to be changed because the fact that it can become so overwhelming with no real way to coordinate with freelance teams is soooo frustrating… Sometimes I think it shouldn’t even have a chance to spawn unless you’re in lower levels of evp or your games hazard level is at a certain percent

What I usually do on bonerattle is the rail cling strat but depending on where the snatchers are, i cling to the rail that alines with the basket of it, tbh idk if it really helps now i think about it bcs u usually kill snatchers too bcs theyre just there in the way of the rush, but i like to think it helps, at least its something. but yeah, this map basically ur just forced to go down and throw in eggs. i agree, this is the worst map to rush and grillers

I've had the opposite issue during rush, where EVERYONE wants to run and get eggs and no one is killing chum, resulting in instant death. As soon as an egg drops everyone stops shooting and rushes towards it. I saw a comment on another video that suggested eliminating Glow flies on the first wave. I think it's a great suggestion. It give you time to see how your teammates work and get a feel for the map and weapons in action before being bombarded.

Yeah, I just read that comment too, it’s an interesting premise that would help in a lot of ways. And about your experiences, it’s so tough. Cause if you’ve got a weapon that can slay well then you can just let your teammates run those eggs and deal with killing. But if you’ve got a splatling or something, it ain’t easy. I’ve actually got plans to discuss some of this in part two, cause the egg running part of rush can be super tricky.

@@rachelskiiiiiii I just had this happen to me about an hour ago 😅 thankfully I had the Jet Squelcher which took care of most of it but as soon as I ran out of ink, it was a bit of chaos. Thankfully we didn't fail the shift. All of your tips and strategies are so helpful and I love watching your MHL and Big Run videos. You've got a true talent for blasting Salmonids and I'm here for it💜

It's really frustrating how many freelancers don't understand that surviving and spawning tons of eggs is useless if they spawn in a location where they can't easily be run. That's the main way I lose this wave. I also think this is Nintendo is at fault for not having an "advanced guide" that explains all this. If you are going to insist on a communication scheme with little to no communication you really need to tell people everything they need to know to succeed. The easiest way Nintendo could fix this wave is to allow the players to throw eggs at 0 ink cost. They could have Mr Grizz give some BS excuse like the Glowflies are also overclocking all the egg tossers. This way it wouldn't matter where the inklings were bunkering in and spawning eggs, running them wouldn't be a chore.

Completely agree about the lack of “teaching” from the game. It’s a core problem with Nintendo games and I actually think it harms more than they realise. You’ll often see so much misinformation as a result and a completely misunderstanding of certain things. I don’t think everybody should be aiming to OF or play seriously all the time, but a little more direction from the game itself would go such a long way!

i like to add on that bay nt has this small issue where the salmon get confused for a second and stop moving, causing them to even take longer to approach. ht or other maps don't have this. afaik this hasn't been fixed yet since i was grinding the last bay which gave us a lot of rush. i think glowflies needs to be reworked even when players have an idea on what to do, it sounds intense in a fun way in execution but it functions even less now that they're faster most of the time and the quotas were higher, balancing eggs and surviving is difficult. like i should not get aggrod on when i got revived 2 frames ago and i still have inv frames on me. this is inspired by another comment but i think it should take tips from joe or grillers even. i've recently grown an appreciation for joe recently. i think its the king with the best fight due to how manipulating him can reward you while being absolutely chaotic and you get a chance to do this often due to him letting you know that you are the next target and it's not like rush where someone might get targeted 30 times while their weapon is perfect for filtering. he tends to follow a pattern where he picks each player one by one unless they die. glowflies following a pattern of players would be incredible so people get the chance to position themselves even if there's no indicator

Rush waves are hard most due to bad players than map layout. So many time I played in freelance with good weapon comp, but lost cuz my teammates were just anything but do the objective...

Yeah I’ll speak more about things like that in part two. Rush in Freelance is hell and I fully agree, I lose often. But there are some things you can do to help and I will speak more about strats for part two.

My major problem is that I am too stubborn to go help them and stay alone in the proper position mashing "this way" and die =/ Still, I don't expect all randoms to be profissional players that alweys get gold medals and play at 333% hazard, but i expect them to at least inform themselves on how to play the game.

⁠​⁠@@EduSolsafull tea spamming this way is worse than inefficient teammates. if your teammates aren’t doing exactly what you want, forcing them to go a man down is counterproductive, especially when you can’t even explain what to do correctly. buck up and play the team game with your team

I rarely get past EVP 200 in Freelance, Glowflies or no. Still, excellent information.

The only time I ever use the wall strat is when the quota is reached. But with how many freelancers keep relying on sockeye station's spiral tower, that stage and bonerattle are my least favorites because of the "safely stalling" strategy.

@@YoBoyRona your welcome. I am very happy that you played Rachel, andremember thou too there is a Chewoomy out there playing salmon too. Chewoomy and Rachel have known each other since splatoon 2. Unfortunately I bump into Chewoomy and Chewoomy knew about me after I told Chewoomy about my ingame name. Also I played Rachel too and won two games, and one of them is on her live twitch stream of reaching 999 in Bonerattle, and I recognized her immediately, while she has no idea about me.😀😀👍👍👏👏 Keep on playing with Rachel as many times as you want.

Tbh hydra splating aka year of a dragon named weapon fully charged is 30 damage not 60. Also if i had a splat or tetra brella i can release the canopy into facing a wall in a certain way when being glowflied you can kill chums causing more chums and goldies to spawn especially that you can tell if goldie by hearing the goldie noises. Also I know that there is a lot more stalling in sock eye station, especially the spiral wall, and the entrance of a spiral especially that Chewoomy, i definitely know that played with Chewoomy and Chewoomy knows you, the second time Chewoomy in one my matches, using a dynamo roller on the entrance of spiral thou i died too in this one but Chewoomy revived me as always and somehow me and Chewoomy with our team won, but not jsj, marooner's bay, spawning grounds, and salmon smokeyard. I did have more success of the same strategy of Bonerattle arena of what you showed, but I always seen them doing 100%. Also this happened to me twice that is an extremely rare chance that you won't even gey glowflies at all, and i was happy and lucky to not get glowflies at all. I mostly collect eggs in the basket with most weapon types, but rollers as if i put it close to the basket. I really don't like it when I paint the walls the rush appeared, and i got glowflies with my teammates saying this way, so i have to be with my teammates. I also got splated way to many times especially trying to get eggs into the basket, but got glowflies and immediately i died, plus i laughed my self for this one. Good thing i am not in this video. Everybody likes your great video and I definitely recommend this one.😀😀👍👍👍👏👏.
