Hi Charlee.. Thank you so much for posting this. I just purchased an Elite Desk 400 G4 with the I-5 8500T processor. The USB-C port didn't come as standard equipment on this model (at least not on the front of the box). Adding the USB-C attachment to the rear (like you did) makes the Elite Desk much more functional and opens up many possibilities. Thanks again my friend. Hope you got your computer working the way you want it now that you've added the ne part. Great job on this video.
Hey Charlee it took me less than two minutes of me starting to watch this video to realize the value of your channel to become a subscriber. I am looking forward to seeing all your videos.😊 Thank you
Back in the 1990's I was a computer support and specialist and network technician I was in the loop for all the newest advances and had access to most of the up-to-date hardware. After I got sick and ended up disabled I started losing touch with the different options available for computers and printers.until this video I wasn't aware that I could swap the vga port to usb c. I am familiar the display port as I recently purchased a bunch of hp elitedesk mini units with the display port instead of VGA. I know that several of these were sold to employees as well. The asking price originally was $150 but eventually sold for $100. No monitors just the elitedesk 800 g4 dm unit with power cord. Now that I am aware of being able to install a usb c port I will be able to help the ones that purchased the same units as I purchased. I can give them the option of installing a vga port or a usb c port. Where I live you don't get to see the changes that are evolving in the world of IT.
Glad I could help I got my start in information technology back in 2006 when windows XP was the operating system in use. I had about 12 year run until I got burned out doing Helpdesk and desktop support . Now I just try my best to keep up with the fast changing technology nowadays.
I've been working on my free time with this motherboard for months, and I didn't realize there was a second m.2 drive! I'm embarassed, thanks so much for a great guide!
Thanks for the showoff, Sir. I am considering this for a weekend media PC - and also a Lenovo720q, where the situation will presumably be very similar.
@@charleeeugene Yea, seen some Lenovo video yesterday, looks the additional card is pretty similar, only with some standoffs of sort, not directly snug to the main board. I see both Lenovo and HP have its perks, tho. Can you please advise how these expansions are officially called? I am getting full-sized cards mostly in the search results.
@@charleeeugene Thanks! Will have a look around what is available. Still waiting for confirmation what the pieces I currently have my eyes on actually have at the back.
I like the precision of both this video and the other one you did on the G2. Very helpful! The number of variants of these HP mini PCs is extremely confusing. I think the IO module on the G3 -- the model I'm interested in buying -- can be swapped in the same way as the G4's (e.g. VGA or nothing --> HDMI). Correct? Unrelated to this: I notice that you have TWO M.2 slots for memory plus a dedicated WiFi slot. As far as I understand, most (but maybe not all) G3 models have only ONE M.2 slot and one WiFi slot (which runs in the same direction, parallel to the the memory slot). The same is true of the older G2. However, one video I saw suggested that some (newer?) G3 models have a similar configuration as the G4 (2 x M.2, plus WiFi). If you're familiar with the G3, can you comment on this? I suppose if one buys from Amazon, it's going to be hit or miss (i.e. impossible to know in advance).
Thanks for watching!!! I have only worked on the G2 and G4 I would assume the G3 is similar to the G4. But like you said there’s so many different variants only thing you can do is ask the seller what’s under the hood spec wise. Tell him to take photo since it’s super easy to take off the cover. But your right it’s kind of hit or miss. My advice get a good deal on one!!!!
EliteDesk 800 G1 and G2 USFF have one M.2 SATA slot, plus one M.2 WiFi EliteDesk 800 G3 USFF have ONE M.2 NVMe slot, plus one M.2 WiFi slot. EliteDesk 800 G4 USFF have TWO M.2 NVMe slots, plus one M.2 WiFi slot. All EliteDesk have the Option Board slot… DS9 I/O, VGA, DP, HDMI USB-C… G1 G2 G3 G4 G5 G6 and TWR MT SFF USFF have different form-factors, be aware of the one you need. “Generation” did not overlap. There were no ‘early’ or ‘late’ versions. Be aware that the cover may be wrong (as in this video, Elite vice Pro) G1 G2 G3 have only one M.2 SSD I have no experience with Pro Desk models, only EliteDesk. But in general, ProDesk were simpler ‘Buisiness’ machines, with fewer connections, ports, etc. ‘Cheap’ was the word. Oops, forgot to add: EliteDesk USFF came in 35Watt and 65Watt versions. This dictated what type of CPU could be used. 65Watt models had beefed up V+ rails, coolers and fans. Also needed 95watt PSU’s. Yeah, confusing is as confusing does….
I have the same one, and in regards to that front plate that says "Prodesk" I found a replacement faceplate on a 3D print site I'm on, and I printed a new one with the USB-C port for free in like 30 minutes lol. Just an FYI.
Hi, I wanted to ask for advice, I have a HP G3 Mini 65 Watt model, for video outputs it has 3, VGA and 2 displayports. Is it possible to remove the VGA module and put an HDMI module in? It might work? Thank you
Another unrelated question: I'm really keen on buying one of these but I've just finished watching a video about the latest HP offering (see: HP Elite Mini 800 G9 Review - Project TinyMiniMicro). It mentions the huge problem of being locked out when trying to change hardware on a second-hand unit, for lack of the original HP BIOS password. Evidently, this problem could be overcome up to HP generation G4 by fiddling with a jumper on the motherboard to reset/wipe the BIOS. (No longer possible in subsequent generations for "security reasons".) Did you hear of this? Even if you didn't come across this problem, do you know where the jumpers are on your G4 motherboard? On the G3, they are right beside the same IO board that you swapped out, but I don't see them clearly in your video (G4 having a different motherboard).
@@charleeeugene No problem, I think I found it on another excellent video: "My IT Workshop". (It's under the RAM modules.) Hope this helps someone else...
Greetings Charlee, Quick question: In the video did you say you change your i5 processor out to a i7 processor? If you did, Which i7? Because I'm looking for a mini that will support a i7-4790 processor. I also saw your G4 had 2 M2 slots... I stupidly am looking to the G9 one.. but heck if your g4 will take my i7 I'll look for one of those...Thanks in advance.
go with Intel Core i7 8th Gen 8700T or lower generation make sure the T is at the end. Some people say that got regular CPU's to work without it. But they had to get a higher wattage power supply. I'd play it safe so you don't have to waste time and money. the T series Chips are lower powered and lower performance.
Curious why you didn't just cut a USB-C sized hole in the face plate, you already have the hardware behind it, personally I wouldn't care if it said prodesk or elitedesk as long as I can use the ports.
I thought about it but then the re sell value goes down if I decide to sell it in the future. But you're right about not caring whether it's says Pro or Elite Desk.
Do you know of any options to leave this open for better airflow? Hate how loud the fan is and think that this could be a solution. Would like your input.
If you have a 2.5 inch SSD switch to M.2 that way the drive caddy isn't blocking airflow. Also you might need to reapply thermal paste to your CPU. Clean your Processor fan and download a temp fan control software to regulate the fans. Hope this helps !!!!!!
@@charleeeugene thank you! I’m very new to the IT world. Finished my first semester of school so I am troubleshooting everything. Thanks again for the advice!
Hello, one question is this now working as thunderbolt? I don't know much about this ports. I mean can you add egpu now and connect with thunderbolt 3 or 4?
Not sure I only plugged in flash drives and keyboards into it. I don’t think it will support anything that needs more power. These small form factor pc’s get their power from power brick adapter. But don’t know for certain
HP USB C Flex IO Card DisplayPort this is what you might have got from ebay is there a standard usb c to hdmi or your monitor is usb c to usb c display I have portable monitor that i wanted to hookup but it needs hdmi so have to get display port to hdmi port connector
Just got one from EBay, works great running window 11, however it’s a little bit loud. Is there anything I can do to reduce the noise? Much appreciated
Did you clean your cpu fan ? Also they have fan control software and lastly you can buy a new fan they are cheap on eBay. Mine doesn’t make much noise at all. Thanks for watching!!! Much appreciated
Hi Charlene, I have the G4 also and trying to get a thunderbolt module but none anywhere in the world 😢I wonder could this IO connect to some adopter for thunderbolt? Thank you
I don’t think that’s possible due to thunderbolt being exclusively used by Apple products. I’ve only seen the 3 modules mentioned m the video. I’ll look on eBay later today and let you know. Thanks for watching!!!
@@charleeeugene if you managed to track it down you would be legend! My new music gear has thunderbolt and if I can't source the adopter I'll have to source a laptop with the connection. I've maxed up the spec of my G4 and love it as its a little beast.
@@xntricity6446 Thunderbolt and USB-C cables and ports are not the same, but they look almost identical and perform nearly the same functions. On most devices, the cables and ports are compatible so you can connect either cable to either port. But Thunderbolt connectors transfer data much faster than USB-C. If you’re connecting a USB-C cable to a Thunderbolt port or a Thunderbolt cable to a USB-C port, speed will default to the less powerful standard of USB-C. Both Thunderbolt and USB-C have the same 24-pin connector too, so the only way to visually tell the difference between Thunderbolt and USB-C is by identifying the trademark lightning symbol near the port or cable connector. Finally, a Thunderbolt port is more expensive, because it must have a Thunderbolt controller chip and certification from Intel.
@@charleeeugene there are different types of usb C. One, just for data. Other is call SS (super speed) 10 & SS 20. And then there is USB C with DP (display port). The last one with DP is going to be mainstream port in future, like all in one connection from PC or Laptop to monitor.
Hi, thanks for your video! Was really useful. After adding an NVMe Evo like you, wanted to add a usb C for my second screen. My card does data+display, so my second monitor, which is portable, can work with only one cable.
what is the module called? im trying to find an ethernet card to use in replace of that VGA. im looking for one because i want to use my 800 g3 mini as firewall.
It says with the part #3TK79AA have the Support up to 60W in (20V, 3A). However, I didn't successfully power up the system with this option card. The spec I refer is here. www8.hp.com/h20195/v2/GetPDF.aspx/c06042607.pdf
Hi, maybe you could help me out :) i have Hp prodesk 600 mini, with i5 8500T, and recently i bought hdmi port, after instaling it does not works. Do i have to enable it somewhere? Can't find anything in the web :/
Did you make sure it attached to the motherboard correctly? Also you don't have to do anything in the bios It should recognize once connected. Try another HDMI Module they are cheap and lastly I would try a more powerful Power adapter to push video to the monitor.
@@charleeeugene might be the part. I've asked the seller for a replacement. Tried reseating it 3 times but no luck, old display port worked fine when I reinstalled that so appears it must be the part. Hopefully the replacement works properly.
@@samtriglone8858since my has two display ports I ended up buying active HDMI adapter. Same money wise, same outcome. Didn't had patience to try with another HDMI port
The module with the ‘pigtail’ was the higher-current Power Delivery (PD) version of the USB-C module. Pricey little bugger, though… least I’ve seen has been $40…
@charleeeugene im need to Swap Out the Port IO Option Card on HP EliteDesk 800 mini G VGA to TYPE C I want to use the TYPE C for display / connect to DOCK station Can I do it or Type C Im need the right product for the swap and work for my requirement that is to connect the USB C port to Dock station
