Thanks for explaining country swing, I see a lot of this dance in clubs danced by younger dancers. This explains a lot as to what their dancing.

You're welcome. It has become very popular with younger, "unlearned" dancers. We think (hope) the style will eventually mature as all of the other styles have done.

There is a local group in Tulsa that does the 1940's style swing. There is even one lady there who was a real "Rosy the Riveter". She still dances! A lot of young people make up the majority of members. Thanks for another informative video! You guys are awesome!

That sounds awesome! We love and appreciate all forms of partner dance and have been to several retro swing functions. Very cool people and fun dancing.

Hi, I've never danced a day in my life , but told my wife that we should try it out and she agreed. Finding this video has helped me decide which dance we're going to use. Between this , foxtrot and waltz. Right now it's very confusing. This looks informative. Although I'm still not certain what one to begin with out of the three. You two seem to be within the same height as her and I think these videos will be efficacious in helping us out. Thank you

I like the little history lesson. Gives it a perspective or framework to better understand it all. I like Country Swing too, but struggle with it because I like to be given explicit directions. Not comfortable enough to compose and respond to it myself.

You know... one of the most difficult things for us in making these videos is sometimes just getting Anthony to stop talking hahaha Thank you so much for watching. We’re so glad you enjoyed it :-)

As someone who has done quite a bit of country swing, I would say there are some set steps. When dancing with a new partner I know what moves they are trying to get me to do, and while I may not be able to recall all of them by name, they are the basic steps that I've seen most people learn and teach. There is a lot of room for experimentation, which makes the style quite fun.

Hi there. We agree that there are certain common “moves”. Remembering their names doesn’t really matter since they would be called something different in a different region anyway lol. The issue isn’t with the moves. It’s with the lack of structure. There doesn’t seem to be a set “rhythm” or set “footwork” that has been established as a standard. When we talk about “moves” in country swing, it seems most people are talking about the upper body including the hands, arms, and dance positions. The problem is with the lower half of the body including what are the steps and what is the rhythm that you take the steps. Without a standardized rhythm or set of basic footwork, country swing will continue to be something that lacks consistency between partners. With a disregard to a standard count (or many times a disregard to the tempo of the music), it’s not really “dancing”. It’s partnered movement while music is playing.

Love watching your videos as I’ve always wanted to learn how to dance. Biggest problem I’ve got right now is no one to practice with. Sounds strange but is there something I could do to learn on my own

Great videos. Question what you teach as east coast swing, I learned as doubletome east coast swing. I learned east coast swing as slow slow, rock step , - rock step as a quick quick, is there a reason you did not mention this version? Thank you.
@countrydancex
@countrydancex 4 года назад
There are actually three versions (2 are danced commonly). This is what is called triple swing... with a triple step taking up 2 beats of music. You are referring to single swing ... danced with a single slow step taking up 2 beats of music. There is a third version few people talk about which is double swing... danced with a “tap step” taking up 2 beats of music. The structure is pretty much all the same. Single swing is not commonly danced with country music. It is typically for when the music is very very fast (normally big band type music). Being that this is a country dance channel, we teach triple time east coast swing which is what is danced primarily to country music.

The most polite way to describe country swing is the idea of more studied ways to do a thing versus less studied ways to do a thing. Country swing is a less studied approach 2 swing dance.

That's an interesting point of view. We agree that the whole appeal of Country Swing is the lack of structure, rhythm, and technical requirements. Basically, anyone can do it. That's great for building our dance community.

Where I've danced there is basic footwork for country swing. I can even think of an alternative style that I've seen... There's a side to side step. I can't really explain
@countrydancex
@countrydancex 4 года назад
We’d love love love it if there was a definitive version of a standardized footwork for country swing. We just haven’t found it yet. Most country swing dancers don’t even care. We think it will eventually come along (and hope it does). Some dance instructors teach “single swing” (or single time East coast swing) as country swing. Others teach something similar to hustle. One of the franchises teaches a dance they made up called “push pull swing”. Most country swing dancers just have a hard time breaking the footwork down. Let us know if you can find anything. We’d love to see it!

@@countrydancex In the club that is at my college the popular dances are East coast single time, west coast, and country. We are all taught the same version there, and while most who come already are familiar with single time east coast, some have seen the step we use for country in the past. I have also seen it briefly used in some videos on show her off dance's videos. If you can get me an email address or something I can send you a video of our club doing our step to country!

I have to disagree with you that the west coast swing is dance to same music at east coast. EC is for much faster songs and WC is more for slightly slower, bluesy type songs,, at least in country music. BUT,, to each their own. Im sure we've all seen someone dancing the east coast to what we feel is a WC and vice versa.
@countrydancex
@countrydancex 4 года назад
Gotta hand it to you... you ALMOST made us spend the time to rewatch one of our own videos hahaha! But then, we thought to ourselves that we’d never say that “west coast swing is dance to the same music at east coast”... that wouldn’t be true and we know better than that. ECS is typically faster (wcs can be danced to multiple tempos and musical genres - not just slower, bluesy type songs). Without knowing where in the video you think we said that, it’s likely that we may have said it “can” be danced to some ecs music, not that it “is”. That would be a true statement. But, giving you the benefit of a doubt, where did we say that?

I didn’t know that ‘flailing’ is actually ‘country swing!’ I’m going to continue to call it ‘flailing’ and I think it ‘sucks’

Country Dance X I’ve been following you for awhile, and have taught dancing clear back in the disco era. I have always taught that you move ‘with’ the music. I think you are proponents of that philosophy. 😊 you do a nice job with your videos.

We don’t do much country swing dancing ourselves... but we do think it’s great for our community. Anything that can get people out on the dance floor is a good thing, right?

Country Dance X I liken it to a concert I heard once in Manhattan. There was a conductor and a small concert band and the musicians were allowed to independently play whatever notes they chose. The entire concert was like this. There was no ‘score’ for them to read. It was some sort of ‘music’ but painful to watch. LOL (true story)
