A quick tutorial on how to demolish slime biomes, short version throw down some deoderizers and rip the biome up. Long version come in from the top. Slime is pretty much a non issue right now so with a tiny bit of preparation you should have no issues dealing with it.

I saw this hit my feed yesterday and have been excited to watch it. I've got 75 hours played over multiple saves and have never dug out of the starting biome. The advanced mechanics of this game are, to me, pretty daunting. My biggest issue is not knowing what to do, when or in conjunction with what. I love this video as it's short, to the point and walks you through it. Most "tutorials" I have found searching are either old and outdated or they are buried in a 30 minute video (or worse a 4 hour live stream) and you have no idea where to find it and when you do, they typically bounce around multiple times during the process so you never really can follow what the original point was. Kudos to you. I would LOVE to see an entire series of these dealing with the various biomes and then also various advanced mechanics in the game (SPOM, Water Cleaning, Water Cooling/Heating, etc). Anyway, thanks again!

I couldn't have said it better. I, too, am a new user.. 47 hours according to steam, and I face the same challenges in not knowing how to tackle things, so there's a lot of googling going on and I usually end up finding the same type of videos as you did Ragin. It does get frustrating also when you try something that was published a couple of months ago, but that no longer applies for whatever reasons. (updates?) I'm seriously considering shelving that game for a few months until things get a bit more stable and there's ref material as good as Francis' videos to rely on.

I'd leave the home biome to find a geyser quickly. I got really far with research and dupe skills and ran out of coal. Found a natural gas geyser and it went dormant almost right after I setup a power station....so by Bye power. I now have no power, 35+ cycles till the geyser turns back on. Food stored in a ice biome which means dupes get hypothermia when they get food. , Losing oxygen quickly AND slime lung spreading into the O2 of my base because of the low pressure. I know where another geyser is but its faaaar away and couple of my dupes are pukeing and wetting themselves from stress trying to get to it. ... Sooo much ugh. So yah... Find a geyser build that powerstation ... Or two before say cycle 50.. Or around then. Don't wait till cycle 100-120 like I did.

When I started playing this game I was really daunted by the fact that you'd run out of materials because at some point you make polluted water and you have to clean that water or you are losing water and that uses sand and power both of which seemed finite to me but after watching your videos I've realised that while sand is finite it's at the level where you won't run out for a very long time and there is actually an infinite source of water in steam vents. I was also worried that making power from hydrogen by splitting water would result in less power than was used to split the water but that's not the case either although it is in real life. Basically I was worried about mass deleting (sand goes away when you change dirty water into clean water where as it should turn into some sort of mixture of sand + whatever was making the water dirty) and entropy in that you'd run out of resources to create energy but I've come to realise that 1 there is a stupidly large amount of materials and there are also resource taps in the form of vents and space debris so you could use regolith from space instead of sand. Anyway that's just to say I was very wary of this game when I first played it and I always tried to create a very small base when really I should have just watched some videos to understand the mechanics of things rather than assuming they work in a real world way. So thanks

Slimelung used to be super annoying given that you are almost surrounded by slime. But they nerfed it way too much :/ * a nice trick is to plant a buddy bud at at the entrance/exit of the slime biome. Two germs can't occupy the same space so it blocks the slimelung from spreading * I like to place two hand sanitizes there too, so they wash their hands. Brand new player here: there really should be better descriptions on the algae terrariums, because it doesn't actually say anywhere that they release polluted oxygen. I only discovered this by trying, because the gas pressure in my base was too high for oxygen diffusers to work properly (which probably means I had enough oxygen already?) Also when did deodorizers start requiring power?
@DMunz1
@DMunz1 2 года назад
I know your comment is 8 months old at this point but all the buildings have a requirements section and an effects section that says what it needs to operate and what it will produce so it says polluted oxygen under "effects". I recommend a quality of life mod called "more building info" which tells you more information about each building which is helpful. They also added power to deodorizers when the Spaced Out DLC came out. Hope this helps!
@hbarudi
@hbarudi 3 года назад
My base, every vertical ladder to go up and down has a fire pole on one side and mesh tile with deodorizer on the other side. Now the DLC requires electricity for deodorizers so best to use a unique electric grid for them as they consume 5w each allowing 200 on normal wires and 400 on conductive wires.

@ZombiePete1

Slime can be converted into water, and food (mushroom farm). It does have some uses. Letting it convert into polluted oxygen also gives you easy polluted oxygen to run through deoderizers. The de-oderizers will give you a lot of clay, which means you have a lot of materials for ceramic, which is the best insulation in the game at the moment. (not sure what they have done with abyssalite)
@alexanderharrison7421

@TheBlastMage
@TheBlastMage 4 года назад
Best way would be to dig out and around (with atmo suits due to the distance) then hit it from the middle or top. Seal in the bottom so it doesn't spill then just dig the top out and work your way down. Clean it out, then optionally pump out the water if you want to use the space near the bottom for stuff. If you absolutely cannot dig around it at all, seal in a small shaft with deodorizors and find a spot without water so you can dig up to the top, then carefully drain the water into one location so it doesn't flood your shaft. Not as clean that way, but gets the job done and gives you space to work.

I know this vid is old. But I really hope they fix this. I play on default settings. And I don't leave my biome until after insulating. And medical room setup. Then build airlock setup with sinks for the purpose of entering swamp biome. Including storage submerged in 3 tiles of water..And setup deodorizers. I have oxygen mask dock on my side of the airlock. Therefore to be completely safe to go in this biome. I don't even go into any other biome until atmo suit. Even though I know it's unnecessary. Something more like this sort of precaution should be default basic settings. In the current design medical stuff and oxygen mask is just meaningless and unused.

I like to make a few storage bins in the remaining water of the first slime biome I excavate set them to only accept slime and put the priority on 9 until they contain all the slime. Because all the slime is localised the dupes sort it out in very short order. Then I destroy the storage again. And for my money the greatest problem (these days) with any kind of gas other than oxygen in your base is that it causes oxygen to disperse more slowly. The oxygen can't disperse as quickly because it has to get around moving squares of the other gas. O2 and CO2 alone are fine, but add a third gas and it becomes extremely chaotic. Just cleaning out polluted oxygen will often cause corners of your base that have lower levels of oxygen to become properly ventilated within a few cycles as long as the CO2 has somewhere to go.
@tejing2001
@tejing2001 5 лет назад
Slimelung can also be dangerous if your base is fairly overrun with CO2 or another unbreathable gas, since dupes can have trouble getting basic tasks (like going to the bathroom) done in the time before their breath runs low and they run off to breath... In some cases this can get them stuck in an infinite loop and they can (ironically) starve to death.

I suggest keeping your excavation to one condensed entry point into the biome so you can set a whole bunch in close proximity, that way the wiring is manageable and no air can escape without going past 67 deodorizers. His approach is a bit too open in my opinion but I think I've just played too much at this point. It would still be workable though. If the deodorizers are on a dedicated line a full 40kj battery could probably keep 10 going for several cycles on one charge.

A little, slimelung use to be deadly and could kill bases but they nerfed it into the ground. So long as you spam some deoderizers and put the slime under water so it's can't keep off gassing it's a non issue.

Hello Francis! Thank you for this fantastic guide. Even though I have been playing this game for years, I actually learned a lot and changed the way I approach a slime biome. I had a couple questions for you. Could you possibly make a guide for people who play the hardest difficulty, especially the part about carrying the slime around to change it into algae. I have had a lot of troubles carrying slimes with dupes because of the thousands of germs they put on themselves requiring them to use 6-7-8 sinks in a row sometimes. I'm not sure if it would be better to use the shipping / convoys system instead? I also run into a lot of troubles with dupes carrying slime, then go do something else ending up contaminating other materials and eventually these materials full of simelung get into the main base and it becomes very tedious doing a lot of reloading of saved games to get it under control. It would be interesting to see how you set your priorities on dupes to make sure that such things do not happen. It would also be interesting to cover the part about slimelung in other gas such as co2 or H2. I have managed to destroy co2 simply by using carbon skimmers but it seems like the polluted water that the carbon skimmer outputs will have slimelung so it's important to make sure to drop it in a polluted water container outside of the main base. Finally, I know that slimelung is not that dangerous but I like to play the game fully immersed. As a result, I consider slimelung a very serious deal and I also try to avoid using mechanics or building/positioning tricks that do not make sense in real life as much as possible. For example, I don't use the salt water tiles to keep gas inside a room. Instead, I build decompression areas.
@matteocdt5214
@matteocdt5214 4 года назад
I still don't trust slimelung. Therefore i usually dig into a pool from up, place a ladder to the bottom, throw some clean water for stop the polluted water from offgassing and then i just dig from the bottom, so the slime falls into the water pool, then my dupes bring the slime into a storage facility placed into a frozen biome with some crude oil placed around the compactors. The slime is stored here, the cold enviroment makes a quick job of the slimelung and boom, free germ-free slime

Dump some clean water on that polluted water to cap its p oxygen production, dunk a compactor into that water and sweep the slime into there. That way you don't have to keep running to refill deodorizers and the oxygen will become 100% pure

From the other side of the spectrum, how do you create polluted oxygen on maps without slime biomes. I am having problems getting clay to make ceramics early game.
@dsch772
@dsch772 5 лет назад
Helicard If you don’t have a geyser, the more efficient way is to farm morbs. They spawn after an outhouse has been out of order (full) for about a cycle. You need quite a lot of them to have a consistent polluted oxygen production. Another easier but less efficient option is polluted dirt or a layer of polluted water. I don’t find polluted water emitting polluted oxygen very often anymore in the current version, but at least it used to work.

Algae Terrariums, can use that in a Puft stable. Also can filter pO2 and dump it back into the stable with a mini pump. All other gases go out of the stable. Although that will never be enough clay, just a supplement. Keep hunting out pockets of swamp biome & polluted water in your asteroid.
@wreckcelsior
@wreckcelsior 5 лет назад
Toilet water dumped into a pit... you can either leave it as liquid, or mop it into bottles, but don't empty the bottles, let them off-gas. Ultimately you would seal off the room, (door is fine) with a pump inside to remove *some* of the air, leave around 1000g to be safe; too much air pressure and *nothing* will off-gas. The air pressure control is also recommended for the 2 suggestions above. cheers.

To add to the below fill a liquid tank with 5 tons of polluted water then deconstruct the liquid tank leaving behind a 5 ton bottle of water. The Polluted water will off gas at quite a reasonable rate. Stick some deoderizers above it and reap the clay. To get the polluted water carbon skimmers or maybe mass showers :)

@OgdenM
@OgdenM Год назад
Deodorizes now need power so, it's a bit more complicated. Also side note people, you need multiple sources of power quickly. I ran out of coal around cycle 120, found a natural gas geyser, built a power station but the geyser went dormant very fast after. I'm trying to recover by rushing to another far away geyser, put my food in a ice biome..dupes really don't like hypothermia when they are getting food. . But it's not looking good. My O2 level is dropping and slime lung is getting into my base from the low low pressure. (I even had to switch to alage piles for O2 production... And 8 isn't cutting it. .. Pressure is 800 and falling. And my dupes are insanely stressed out from low morale (trained in things that aren't faves) not enough + to morale.... And the constant slime lung while trying to get to the 2nd geyser and daily hypothermia is stressing then out. ... I'm debating going back to a very old save from the beginning on this map and correcting my errors...... ... But, idk, trying to salvage this sounds like a challenge.

@mowana1232
@mowana1232 5 лет назад
Another option if you have discovered a cold biome is to put the slime in a storage compactor in there next to a deodorizer that will neutralize the polluted oxygen it off-gases. Slimelung rapidly dies once the temperature of the slime is less than +20 C degrees. One or two cycles should be enough to get rid of the slimelung.
@weltraumvogel2
@weltraumvogel2 5 лет назад
@@mowana1232 yeah thanks. I did not think about freezing them to death yet - good point.
@gimmethegepgun
@gimmethegepgun 5 лет назад
Or you can store them surrounded by chlorine which will rapidly kill it off (though you'll need an airlock solution to keep the chlorine where it's supposed to be) But regardless, for mushrooms, you can just store it underwater until it's transported for fertilization. It doesn't offgas while it's in the farm (I don't think it does when it's being carried either) and the germs disappear with the slime so it'll just make the dupes get covered in it and put some on your ladders, which doesn't do anything.

Depending upon the map i start a balm lily farm early and create medical packs, combined with a sick bay it solves any slimelung issues.
