Never grip a tailshaft tube in a vice to hold it or you may damage it. This will cause imbalance and render the shaft unserviceable.

One of the better videos of a carrier bearing replacement! One thing I would add is to smack the driveshaft by the u joint after installing the u joint to release the tension on the part due to pressing in the joint to the shaft. Ypu are a really good technician, keep up the great work.

Thanks Chris! Just another tip, Although possible without a bench vice it is definitely the way to do it. Esp to get the carrier bearing itself off. Great video! I need to do this on my 2004 Tacoma, so I'm assuming it will be very similar. I was very intimidated by the u-joint removal/replacement part of this, but you did a great job explaining that, and I think I can tackle that now. One thing that may be an issue for me on the replacement carrier bearing (already en route to my house) is that part that sticks up on each side of the top. I have a carrier bearing drop (spacers) installed currently (to help w/ vibes after lifting the truck), and it looks like those "ledges" slide over that bracket that the bearing screws into. Thank you for taking the time to film this!
@Adv4x4
@Adv4x4 2 года назад
Hey no problem! With a 2004 Tacoma I don’t believe you have to even take apart the ujoint itself. I think it’s a double Cardan joint with a flange that unbolts giving you access to the large but you need to remove to slide the flange off and remove carrier bearing itself
@eljefeslash
@eljefeslash 2 года назад
@@Adv4x4 yep, I just looked, and you're absolutely right! That should make it even easier. I've had some random, violent shaking under the floorboard (no specific speeds but recently happened while on the interstate), and I'm hoping this solves the problem. There isn't a ton of play in the carrier bearing, but it can't hurt to install a new one anyway.

As many of them as I’ve done like this I haven’t had any problems so I’d be willing to say you won’t have any issues! Either way works I prefer the hammer and socket method it’s fun, quick, and easy instead of messing with the press kits!

Do you know the part number of the yoke that you have to slip off to get the carrier bearing off. I can’t find a part number for it and all the part stores want me to buy a whole driveshaft. Just trying to see if I can find another way. Any help would great thanks.

I’m sorry I do not have that part number!

The worst part of this job is the dang needle bearings falling into the bottom of the cap when you install the cap. Aggravating it was. I'd keep adding more grease thinking it would hold them in place but it just takes one to fall off to screw up the whole operation.

is this Dorman part still going good 3+ years later? just curious.. i bot a genuine Yota OEM on one of the online dealer parts sale (40% off MSRP) ... it was still quite a bit over 100$ for the part

I will be doing an updated video I’m replacing my carrier bearing with an aftermarket solid unit! www.mitchmadeinc.com/product-page/toyota-center-support-bearing

I read in a tacoma forum that you first have to torque it to 134 ft lbs and then loosen it up and torque again to only 51 ft lbs. Is that information correct. Everything else in the videos is great very detailed. Thanks
@Adv4x4
@Adv4x4 3 года назад
I pulled the torque spec information from All Data which is a huge automotive database used by I’d imagine almost every auto repair shop and I just followed their instructions for that part. So it is correct to the best of my knowledge 👍🏼

Thank you very much for the reply. 134 ft lbs it is, I'll be doing this in a couple of weeks to my 07 Tacoma. 👍👍👍

Great video! Dorman parts are a little questionable for me, but if it works for you, can’t argue with that. I like using OEM Toyota parts as sometimes it’s the same price as aftermarket or cheaper. To each their own.

I’ve typically had good luck with Dorman but everyone seems to have different experiences. I do agree oem is best!

Thanks for making this! How did you know your carrier bearing was bad? I think mine may be.
@Adv4x4
@Adv4x4 4 года назад
You will get a slight vibration on acceleration when you take off from a light! Or you can get under the truck and you can see how much slop it has. Mine was visibly bad as well. Drive line was sagging in the bushing 👍🏼
