Plus he goes step by step and does not have to use that confusing chart, I don't use it, I have been playing for fifty years.

Use your ears, first and foremost. Just pretend the “chart” isn’t there if it’s distracting for you. It’s only meant to be a visual representation an additional learning tool for those that read music, as we try to cater to folks with different learning styles. Also remember that this Lesson #7 in a 14 Lesson Course designed for intermediate players.
