In this tip, I'm going to show you how to take a divot. This is not about hitting down on the ball or leaning the shaft forward. In no way do I want you doing that. Instead, there's a different way. It's simple and will allow you start taking perfect divots in minutes.
Pick Up Free Samples of The Body Swing here: bodyswing.com/...
So many people have tried to take divots in the past by hitting down on the ball or hitting ahead of the ball. If this actually worked, you wouldn't be here watching this tip. So it's obviously not working which means it's time to try something different.
First, we're going to understand why you even take a divot. If you don't know this, you will never get it. So I'll explain it so you finally understand why you take a divot.
Once you understand how to take a divot, we're on to the secret fix. This is a new feeling that you need to try. Keep feeling this for about 5-10 mins and no joke you'll finally start taking divots without ever having to purposely hit down on the ball.

Your videos are amazing! Started playing 6 weeks ago, I keep thinking I've "got the body swing" then sadly realising I haven't... until today the video you talk about throwing a ball and that movement of the lower body finally helped it all click. I went to the range today and in the last 15 balls it worked. Taking a divot with each shot used 5 iron then 9 iron and boom still taking a divot. I honestly thought the club had got stuck in the ground until I lifted my head and saw the ball dissappearing straight and long and the club hinged up above my head. It felt bizzare but so good! Not sure if I'll be able to do it next time but I'll give it a go! Thanks Paul your explanations are so clear and easy to understand!

Been playing 25 years and have never had a divot in front of the ball. Tried this and was amazed how well the ball would go even with extremely loose arms but still no divot after a 60 ball bucket. Well, a few trenches behind the ball but nothing in front. I'm sure my arm is still chicken winging but I can't seem to stop it. Maybe I'm not keeping my arm loose enough but at a certain point I can't isolate the looseness to my arm and everything falls apart and I start shanking, duffing, pulling, etc.. I still feel this is really good advice so will keep trying but just pointing out that results won't be instantaneous for some of us.

I have been getting people to take divots for year by loosening them up. Problem is people don't want to let go. They want control. If you turned your arms completely off though would you not have to use your body for power? Power it with your body and you are doing what pros do.

I would attest! I watched and studied PW's golf instruction videos 2 years ago and my golf game totally changed. I went from hitting my 8 iron 135, to now hitting it 150-155. 7 iron from 150, no now hitting it 165-170. I also brought my handicap down to a 9 from a 15. I couldn't understand why my golf buddies could hit the ball a mile. I am now taking divots on every shot, pressing the ball, decreasing the degrees on my clubs and increasing distance. I have been telling others about Paul for the past 2 years and how his golf instruction works. When on the range and hitting pure sounding balls with divots, i love when someone asks me "who taught you how to hit the ball like that?" I will always direct them to Paul Wilson. Thanks Paul!

I was playing 18 holes of golf a little while ago and a few times I took a divot, the ball traveled much better. The problem I have is too much practice on these mats they have at the driving range are too hard, no good for irons in my opinion, and also here in this apartment one can only swing and barely scrape the floor, you can hear a fart a mile away, and so taking a divot outside for me has not been programmed in my memory banks to do such a thing:) Now, as of 2hrs ago I'm officially retired, I'm going to work my way down to China, that's my new job, when I climb out I'll be swinging like a batter outta hell, well a least hot out of the oven:) These tips are coming in handy more and more, Doc Wilson is my Tip Teacher, number one that is. Got to be a reason people don't take divots and why it is your average to poorer golfer. So over 30 years of loosening people up and they start taking divots that is most likely the answer. Stay loose and you will get them.

Hi Paul… any chance of a video on practicing on mats. In the UK it’s hard to find practice ranges that allow you to strike of the grass. Once I get longer tan an eight iron I use a short tee on the mat and consciously strike the mat in front of the tee. This tip I think explains why that works for me.
@paulwilsongolf

Well, you need to keep working on the fundamentals. I could care less if I am on mats but I am making good contact. If you hit the mat first you need to add more body. Taking a divot is the hardest thing to replicate in golf, but it can be done! 1 : your grip has to be very soft and in the last 2 fingers of your left hand., with very loose wrists and I can't emphasis this enough. 2 : don't ever try and take the club head back to the ball. Let the golf club do it's thing at the top. Never rush it, just feel it floating forever, in transition and with loose wrists combined with a soft grip : sureder to gravity : ie feel it floating up : stopping and floating down, without presuming that it's ever going to come down!
@paulwilsongolf

Mo Norman, the greatest ball striker of all time, never took a divot. "Slice of bacon - never a pork chop" was his motto. Thanks for the video Paul but you haven't successfully explained the importance of taking a divot except that it's the 'thing to do'.

I grew up 10 mins from Moe and met him many times. Bacon strips for sure. He did say that which makes sense. No one should be taking super deep divots. Started on hole 4 today, nice lush fairways. Hit a lovely divot iron a la this video. The next 17 holes had dirt fairways burnt to a crisp. I kept hitting nice looking divots but the ball-flight felt...slippery. Is it still possible to use this kind of ballstriking pattern on burnt-out fairways? PS. worked from the rough several times and from the driving range grass which was nice and soft, so I believe in the principles, just wondering if I need a better venue to practice on or, could it be that perfecting divot shots on turf like this will make me even more solid on soft fairways?

Well, you need some grass. If I had a bare lie I would hitting knock down/punch shots all day. Those tight lies are tricky so playing it back makes it easier. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NeY3UjiN_Ts.html Give that shot a try. You should have this shot in your bag anyway as it is such an advantage in windy conditions as well as bare lies. When you have a half decent like with come grass then do your normal shot.

Amazing. Literally will save so many people from injuries. Making your back follow the force from your arms is why so many people develop lower back issues. Your arms following you body ensures there is no excess force on your back when swinging

@paulwilsongolf love all your vids. They are so good. I have a question/observation: Not once(yet)have I heard you say "Keep your left arm straight" and "Keep you head down"! I notice watching you swing that you actually do bend your left arm slightly in your back swing. Does your philosophy of keeping the arms relaxed(like Jell-O) negate the straight left arm or modify this thought in some way?

'it's a huge problem for 90% of golfers' you say...but why exactly? you've not given a simple reason WHY it's important to take a divot. 🙄 the problem for most is surely striking it fat, taking too much turf with the ball. so if its verging on risky, why is it important to take divots?

Why not watch the whole tip (which you didn't) because at 9:03 I clearly say why to take a divot? Plus, all throughout I say it's get a descending blow. So just keep building the swing and you will get the properly contact.

Your hitting it pretty good so not sure if you would or not. Need to see why you are not taking them. Maybe a slight chicken wing or sometime long ago you trained yourself to come out of it a little so the club never enters the ground. You can try loosening as I suggest. See if it helps. If you are getting those yardages swinging hard and I get you the same yardages feeling nothing then that would be a big benefit.

@paulwilsongolf Месяц назад
Weight is not on the back foot. As you fire your lower body the upper tilts more than it was at set up. Every pro does this. The longer the club the more you fire the more tilt you get. Driver is going to be 25-30 degrees spine tilt at impact. All other clubs would be less than that. I explain in the video as to why a divot is taken. So work on the fundamentals and stop hitting with arms you get the tilt and the divot. Most are trying to hit down and move forward coming down which will never work because it sends the average person over the top. Look up Calvin Peete. Arguably the most consistent golfer of all time. Same thing he had. The bend in the arm is not big deal so long as you extend it to it's widest point. The problem is when someone can straighten their arm yet they have it bend. Now that is the arm getting shorter. Although yours is bent you have it extended to it widest point. So don't see see this as a disadvantage. You shouldn't have any problem taking divots. The issue is hitting and causing the arm to buckle more. So let it extend and you will get it.

If I do anything when swinging, it's that my head stays down, but my body straightens at impact.

So the answer is in this tip. Understand it. If you are not buckling your arms then you are raising up or not creating the tilt as you go between the 2 axis.

does spine angle matter ???

Not hitting with your arms helps you maintain spine angle.

Mr. Wilson, you do a fantastic job with your instructional videos. Why living/working in Las Vegas however? It is a desert! I am still not quite duplicating your swing or the swing of other professional golfers, but I am very close. When I do a practice swing, it is perfect, but when I stand about the ball, I still do not hit the ball perfectly before taking a divot. My hands are ahead of the ball holding the club and I try to treat my arms are merely connectors to the club, then let the full force of my untwisting body be applied to contact with the ball. Occasionally, it is perfect (I video-record myself), but more often I am slightly off. In any case, excellent instruction!

Glad you like them. Thanks. It's great here. No humidity. No rain. Love it. Hard to teach in the rain. With the ball you are still hitting at the ball. Need to go out and swing 50%. Forget distance. The new swing is new. So you need to do it slowly until you can take it to the course. Everyone always wants to go full speed and hit their best shots. Do the new thing but do it slow and get used to it. No divot is the tell tale sign you are hitting.

Great video but I just did the math and on average you would have had to teach two people a day every single day for the last 29 years to be able to teach tens of thousands of people. I think you may be overestimating.

Yeah, I've been teaching since 1991. In Canada in the summer I would do 10 -12 lesson per day every day 7 days a week for the whole summer. Then winters another 600 to 800 indoors at a dome. Then schools of upwards of 10 to 20 people over the last 30 years. So yes, I have taught tens of thousands of people.

Hey, I remembered your comment where you didn't think I taught tens of thousands of people. I just saw a new product. In it the guy says he has taught over 200,000 people. Now, I'm thinking that's a stretch. Hope you call him out on it: www.performancegolf.com/deep-to-shallow/store/video-sc Read it under the orange button.

Hey parents yelling at you is a small price to pay for taking divots. Let's see if you can get it at the course. Stay focused.

A very very important thing to make this happen that a lot of people have a hard time doing is KEEP YOUR HEAD DOWN all the way through impact and into your follow through. That takes a lot of discipline to do that because we all want to see where the ball goes. But we have to believe that if we just keep our down, the ball will in fact go where we want it to go. And staying down will allow the divot to happen too.

For sure. You need to watch what you are hitting. Come out of it and you will never take divots. I just did this one the other day. Give it a watch: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vZ4jKpIscJU.html
