I'm guilty of laying the cue flat on the table when I have to leave the room for a moment . Your reason for not doing that makes sense , I won't being doing that anymore .

I have 6 very good cues, all with carbon fiber shafts that I would clean if they felt like they were getting a little sticky. After watching this video, I started cleaning them after every time I used them with a microfiber cloth and 70% isopropyl alcohol which is what's on Predator's wipes. The difference, after one month is astounding. The shafts are now all silky smooth in the hand and the cues just feel so much better. After watching your other table maintenance video, I also started to use the Simonis cloth cleaning tool every morning before I start my drills. It took a while, but it finally got all of the blue Predator chalk marks out of the cloth. I'm now using Master chalk which seems to leave not so much dust on the table. Thanks for the great advice.

Another good practice. Chalk over the floor with the stick at an angle allowing the excess chalk to land on the floor. Not the table, rails and bridge hand or glove. Recently started using a glove after moving to a very humid ocean front community. The glove shields the wood shaft from hand oil, dirt and moisture. Another discovery was finding a shaft wood sealer, was skeptical to start with. Found it very effective sealing the wood pours with a slick surface.

I NEVER thought to clean the shaft except with a rag while I played. Paper towel and some alcohol and I cannot believe how blue the towel was nor how dirty the shaft was. Thanks, I needed that.

I was actually told by a cuemaker that a DRY mr clean magic eraser on the shaft works. I can confirm it works wonders on my handmade shafts and they are as good as the day I bought them.

Great instruction. After step one I put the video on pause and got up - grabbed paper towel & alcohol & cleaned shaft on the new Pure X I won & my existing Cuetec. After video I read through the comments & saw uh-oh it’s better not to use paper towel. Will use soft cloth going forward.

Do as you wish, or circumstances require, but I had a teammate who left his new Meucci in his car all day before going to "league night", the heat popped all the inlays in his cue, ruined it, he was very upset. This was Atlanta GA summer heat.

Thank you guys for watching and thank you for all of your comments and recommendations. There seems to be a lot of discussion about ways to clean your shaft. THE CUE MANUFACTURERS recommend (alcohol on a clean rag ) unless you use some other solution or wax designed for pool cues. Putting anything else on your shaft is a roll of the dice. Lighter fluid is an example of the quickest way to void your warranty. Since my daughter was 2 years old I taught her to: USE THINGS FOR THAT WHICH THEY ARE DESIGNED.

I primarily use a Lucasi Custom and normally i wipe it down real good with only a jewelry polishing cloth before putting it back in the case. Now that's going onna year, I've noticed a little more friction than when i first got it.. Nothing serious, but I'll often consider using powder so now I'm at a point where I'm wondering about how to make it slick again. Perfect timing for this video!

@AJ Ramos Hi AJ- Several years ago I bought my Cues from Dan Janes that is owner of JOSS CUES and he recommended the Jewelry cleaning cloth as well To clean the shafts. It works very well. I’d burnish it after with a piece of leather or a $5 Bill. It really makes it slick and shines. But that being said- I did just try the alcohol as told in this video and it cleans remarkably fast. Only thing is I would still burnish after cleaning.

I use the same wipes used to clean the leather inside my car. You would be amazed at how dirty the grip is and we cant see it.

Please forgive me ahead of time here but I see virtually no reason to spend what people do on cues. I've had the opportunity to shoot with all kinds of very expensive sticks over the years & even though there is a noticeable difference with LD shafts, it's not enough to warrant spending that kind of money. It's far better to have a stick that is straight & "feels" correctly to you weight wise & above all else, like you said, has a very good quality tip. My "in house" sticks are all McDermott with Kamui medium tips & my "pool hall" stick is a vintage 40 year old Mali again with a Kamui medium tip. As far as caring for my cues, I follow just about all of your advice that you gave. You do provide outstanding advice Bryan & everyone should maintain their equipment to the best of their ability. My mentor or as I prefer to call him, "My Yoda" shoots with a $2000.00 Joss with a carbon Fiber LD shaft & has the same tip as me. Although he does school me quite often, even he admits that it has more to do with his experience (he's 80) than it does his cue. Tips are top brother. Be well, Al-Fu

I watched the video thinking you would surely cover how to take care of a mushrooming tip and I don't mean obscenely mushrooming I mean when it just starts and exactly how you burnish it and get it back where it's perfect again something I need to learn and was hoping in taking care of your cue it would have been number one after cleaning or before cleaning thanks Brian

Man wood takes so much care even coated wood cues. I leave my cue in my case in my closet and boom the shaft is already warped

Back in the day, in Chicago, I used one of those little scotch brite green pads to get dirt off the shaft, not as bad as sandpaper, but not optimal either.

HI BRIAN! just became a subscriber a couple of days ago and have been able to fix a couple of my flaws thanks to your videos! been playing since i could reach the table and all of my play has been figure it out as i go! primarily bar play and using bar sticks 99 percent of the time! I would like to know the best way to go about finding a stick that will work for me, i once used a guys stick that i was playing ang he was winning more than i was and he was nice enough to let me use his $800 stick and i beat him bad enough the five or six games we played he put it back in his car! i need a good stick for a fair price so i dont have to use bar sticks! 0pen for advice! Thank you for your understandable instruction! for those of us that gotta see it to do it !

If I had to do it all over again, I would get a cheap, non-fancy, but well made cue and put all my money into shafts and tips. Go to a pawn shop and buy a used Viking or McDermott or similar for starters. I have 3k in Schons, but this is a much better, more bang for your buck, approach.

Love your videos. Could you do a very detailed one on the grip. Ive been playing now around 10 months. Playing only 9 ball. I think it teaches best cue control. Ive been going back and forth on my loose grip. Full hand , three fingers, big gap on grip, smaller gap. What do you think about the loose grip. Whats too loose vs whats right. Ive settled on full hand with finger locked on thumb with a gap for clearance.

I’ve mentioned it in about a dozen videos you grip is very simple. Hold the cue with the same pressure you would hold a baby bird- you don’t want to fall out of your hand and you don’t want to kill it -

Just a thought. The ferrule is ...in my opinion ...a very important part of aiming process. How about keeping it white instead of blue and or dirty. I try to get as much chalk residue off as I can during my cleaning process. Any suggestions? What do you think? Thanks for all. I am a recently new subscriber.

I myself have used quite a few different tips in all the years I have been playing but I have found a few tips that I prefer over others I would have to say that I prefer either a LePro or recently I discovered another brand of tip called a Samsara True both of these tips are very good quality and hold up under multiple nights of shooting everyweek

I use to wipe my tip with my finger when done playing before putting it in my case..chalk gets everywhere. What process do you use for cleaning the chalk off the tip when your done playing

My chef got dinged up and I use some 3000 grit and took off a little bit of the varnish but I found that my hand doesn’t get so sticky when I’m shooting and I don’t need a glove hardly ever

New fan of this content creator, much appreciation for sharing the wealth of knowledge. Question: Is it a common or accepted practice to use a different shaft with the same base cue? Second question: I have an Irish tweed grip, recommendation on how to clean that? Thanks in advance to any feedback.

It’s no problem, practicing with one shaft and playing with another or changing them. As far as the linen wrap, a lightly moistened rag, should be enough to wipe it down when you’re done playing but if it’s dirty and needs a good cleaning im not much help. I’m sorry I could not help you because I almost never play with those wraps. I recommend calling a Cue retailer.

Bought a cheaper cue at the tail end of last year and I follow that advice, although the weather here is hot and humid and I might carry a microfiber wipe with me or something. The cue came with a LePro tip and after playing with other similar cues with better tips, I think I'll also switch to a more expensive one when the time comes for a change. Any suggestions on that front? How important is it to have a separate break cue for a beginner like me? Thanks for the videos and the input.

More people seem to like Kamui soft or SS than any other tip. I will use Moori, Kamui, or Victory tips. I have never had issue with any of them over the last 20 years. The only thing I demand of a tip is that it is soft or medium, Multi layered and laminated.

Thanks for your time in making these videos. Regarding sanding the shaft, point well taken. There is a product called Q-Wiz, cleaner and burnished. The manufacturer claims it is safe for wooden shafts. Do you agree? Also, any need for Q wax?

I never used any wax on my shaft but the product you’re talking about I do believe it’s safe unless it’s abused. It’s so fine that I don’t think it would harm your cue.

Bryan! Thanks for the video. Funny thing about the tip situation..I play over at Markley Billiards, maybe you've heard of it or been up that way. Regardless, my old friend that teaches me how to play shoots with a 20 year old Meucci and bought a set of tips for like 20 dollars, the cheapest stuff ever and you can see the difference in his shot. Finally someone saying NOT TO USE SANDPAPER! If you use wax you can remove it with all the dirt and chalk residue. A good alcohol wipe will remove the wax slowly. So wax it every 6 months or so.

Good video coach. I also spent a lot of money on Aramith balls. It’s a pain in the ass to clean them the way I would like. Takes a half hour or so by hand. Do you recommend machines like ball star?

FXBilliards my bad for having more that one question but it’s a very relevant question to me. What is your opinion on the new McDermott defy carbon shaft? Have you ever had the chance to play with it. All my gear is McDermott and as much as I like what I hear of the product of the revo I find myself in a position where I do can a better discounted deal on the already cheaper stick defy which supposedly has less deflection than the revo and now both brands now have a visible vault plate. Just wondering which shaft is the best option? We are talking 340 and everything in the name matches or 500 and the predator revo

B Dudley I’ve been shooting with a Pechauer for close to 20 years. I’ve tried other cues but keep coming back to my cue. I think it’s a matter of personal preference, the Pechauer just works well for me. That being said, a Pechauer would not be a wrong choice, but it might not be the right choice for you. I would suggest going to a reputable billiard shop/pool hall and trying several different brands that are in your price range. Go with the one that feels the best to you.

Had someone tell me about using rubbing alcohol and a magic eraser and it works magic to stripping everything off the shaft and the ferrule the only thing is be careful around the swear coat line on your shaft because it can take that off too

I got a predator revo shaft, and when I encounter other people with one, most of them have swapped the tip out. I personally thought the standard tip it came with is great. Any thoughts on the predator tip? Perhaps suggestions for upgrades?

I think honestly people who swapped tips simply didn’t know any better. Most don’t know the difference between a quality tip and the pebble glued to the end of their cue- but in their minds they like one brand over another so that’s what they go with. Every one of my cues has either a victory tip or a kamui tip, and I’m certainly not going to take a victory tip off of the cue to put a kamui on there. I would find that to be a tremendous waste. But as I said a lot of times, people do things because they think they know what they’re doing, and they really have no clue.

For years I used medium tips today I use only soft I use victory brand tips and predator chalk. Medium tips last longer than soft but I replace my tips every six months either way.

I’m a newer player just bought my first cue in January, a players cue. Just got my own table 6 weeks ago, a 7 foot is the biggest size I could fit. I’d like to get a break cue, and a jump cue. Or a break/jump cue? I don’t know how to jump the cue ball yet. What’s the difference between them beside just the length. What should I be looking for when purchasing without really knowing how to jump balls yet?

For a beginner I would recommend a break/jump. You will not get enough time using a jump cue to make it worth buying one at this point. As you move up and that jump becomes more important, maybe then you get a jump cue. The designated jump cue will be lighter and be shaped better for jump shots. But for now, I don't think it makes much sense.

If a wooden shaft is like a wooden floor, the alcohol will eventually damage it. What about vinegar? At a 1 part vinegar to 4 parts water it doesn't damage the finish.

Predator and other cue companies recommend alcohol for cleaning your cue. I have been using it for over 20 years and have not had issue with any of my cues. Most of my shafts are more than 12 years old.

If it’s a one piece Cue I put it vertically in the rack but for all of my two-piece cues I’m fortunate enough to have cases for them. They are usually in a case that sits vertically on the floor. I keep flirting with the idea of getting a display case but they’re so expensive.

I would buy a Victory or Kamui soft or medium. Have a professional put it on. Do not do it yourself. Btw the mediums last a bit longer. But the soft gives you more grip.

Not at all. It evaporates very fast and it’s what the tip cue manufacturers recommend.

Is it alright to use furniture polish on your cue shaft

I’ve tried to figure out a reason that would be a bad idea, but didn’t come up with anything. But I personally wouldn’t do it. And I definitely would not use it on the shaft. I try to use products that are designed for that which I am using them.

I use the Revo wipes. They work on any carbon fiber.

do you have to worry about carbon fiber shafts in your car? I heard carbon fiber is not susceptible to damage like wooden shafts to the large temperature and humidity changes. Also, do you have to worry about it leaning against a wall because it won't warp. Thanks in advance for taking the time to view my comment and replying...

I can only anticipate the carbon fiber won’t have a problem and changing temperature conditions. But there’s still the wooden butt of your cue you should take care of For the long run

Curious as to why it's important to put your cue away every night if it's in a holder and not leaning awkwardly against anything. I understand the cleaning/wiping down when done.

Besides being a good habit, you limit the bad things that could happen to it. Getting dropped, bumped etc. . You also protect it from temp changes, humidity, and other environmental issues. (An issue for some more than others.) There are a ton of guys with tables in their garage or areas without climate control. Kids that can knock it over. Things like that. It's really up to the player. I personally have never once in 30 years left a cue out overnight. BUT, THERE IS ONE GOOD REASON to not put it away. Even though it takes LESS THAN 60 SECONDS to take a cue out of the case and be ready to shoot: some guys are more likely to practice if the cue is sitting out and ready to go. I do leave my break cue out at all times. And it's a pretty nice cue.

Just to tickle my interest, what reason would you not want to sand your shaft (assuming you have no warranty). Coming from a carpenter’s perspective, it can not hurt in any form unless you used a rough grit or for some reason decided to wet sand?

For starters, the least expensive quality cue (shaft only) will run north of $250. Even with a fine sandpaper 95% of the public is not going to sand it uniformly. And you’re taking something that has been meticulously calibrated, and slowly, but surely changing the diameter. For a weak player with cheap equipment, it won’t matter - for a good player with quality equipment it matters greatly. If it’s going to be done, it should be done by professionals.

Hi Jacob Baz here I've been working on cue's for years ....( Timber worker making kitchen's etc ) too many idiots end up thinning the shaft and making oval or uneven flat spots . A very light ( 6/800 grit ) per year is acceptable with one coat of Danish oil wiped dry after a minute then polished off with dry tissue once dry

I don't think that is possible - but if it's a two piece cue, you can just buy a new shaft for it.

That is not true - every major cue manufacturer recommends cleaning their shafts with alcohol. It evaporates very quickly, and it does not hurt the wood.

@FXBilliards southeastern wisconsin. I was wondering if there was a place online that i could get 2 cues, for me and my wife. Preferably in the 100 to 125 dollar range. I tried dunhams but the selection was very poor and half the cues were warped

How do you keep your cue super smooth? I've been using wood oil for a few years but it doesn't seem to be as effective as it has always been.

If you wipe them down with rubbing alcohol after each use, they will stay nice and clean and smoothies. I did a video called how to clean your pool cue it’s really short one minute you should check it out

Im sorry to bother you but if you have time can you please help me with a question I have. What do you recommend doing for joint maintenance? Like say its tight to screw on or unscrew or even squeaky when you screw it on? Any sort of lubricant I should be using to make it a smoother experience? I went through all of your videos but I didn't see anything on what Im asking.... Thank you.

I don’t know what kind of lubricant you could use but cleaning the joint with a paper towel and alcohol might help. Also a Q-tip to get down in the areas you can’t reach

Predator makes wipes for the Revo. They will work on any fiberglass or carbon fiber cue. Alcohol on a paper towel will also work.

Hi! I was always told to avoid moisture with my cue. Is the alcohol an exception for some reason? Also, I just recently got a break/jump cue. I'm new to more advanced equipment, so I'm curious if there's anything different with taking care of that. For example, you aren't supposed to shape the tip for that, right? Thanks for the help! I appreciate the video.

Alcohol evaporates so quickly it doesn’t become an issue. And correct you should not try to shape the phenolic tips on a break cue

@@DavidParraHenry yes. alcohol evaporates like crazy; it's used for some technology because of how fast it evaporates. i'd go with the 91-93%, not the 70's

@@DavidParraHenry No. Rubbing alcohol contains oils such as witch hazel and camphor. You want *isopropyl* alcohol, also available at CVS. It has no oil additives. Also: unlike water, alcohol will not expand wood fibers.

I use McDermott Ultra Glide Shaft Conditioner, it's a Silicone liquid , and it works really well.

I have used it for about a year. I use 3in1 silicone lubricant spray. It outlasts anything else I have tried and is quick to apply. I used to use McDermott Caranuba wax that took longer to apply and didn't last all that long. The silicone does not hurt the wood at all that I can see. I also use a Chem-Pak Q cloth sprayed with a little silicone between cue cleaning it to keep the shaft smooth all the time.

hey Bryan, I keep a package of wet wipes in my bag to clean my hands with. after playing a match one day my hand was blue from the table. I think it is a good idea, but I follow you alot on your videos. please let me know if caring these wipes is a good idea. thanks for all that you do for the game of pool. James

I never leave my cue alone for one minute. I even take it to the bathroom. I don't let it out of my sight. Never let someone "just want to try your cue" for any reason. You will never get it back the same.

Mike Massey told me he "just tried out" some guys break cue, and he broke it. He had to buy the guy another shaft. I'm with you Barry. I actually keep a cheep (well less expensive) shaft in my bag, in case I need to loan a student or another player a cue.

I use fast orange hand cleaner to clean my sticks and I use car wax to keep it nice and slick I have done that for years with all of my sticks and I don't own cheap sticks

Good advice here. Only 1 very minor issue with what was said and it has to do with using paper towels to clean the cue. I know from wearing glasses that cleaning the lenses with paper towels is a no no. Too abrasive. Some kind of micro fiber cloth or a 100 percent cotton rag or tee shirt is best. I use a carbon fiber shafts. If using a wood shaft I can't imagine using paper towels would be wrong. Cheers, John Noe

I dont use either on my CF shaft. I use the Predator wipes. But I get you point about the paper towel. It IS what the cue manufacturers recommended. But a soft towel would be a better option. Thanks for watching and thanks for supporting the channel.

I think you mean cleaning the Farrule. I tend to use the same cloth that I’m cleaning the shaft with each time I clean the shaft. This is probably not the best way to keep it clean but it’s what I do.
