In this video Doctor O'Donovan explains key facts you need to know about a medication called Tamsulosin, also known by its brand names Flomax Relief and Flomaxtra XL.
In the video we cover:
1. What tamsulosin is and why you might take it
2. Common strengths of tablets
3. How and when to take it and what to do if if you forget to take it, or if you take too much by
accident
4. Common and important side effects to be aware of
5. And finally some commonly asked questions
Basic information:
Tamsulosin belongs to a group of medicines called alpha-blockers. It's used to treat men with symptoms of an enlarged prostate (benign prostate enlargement).
It's also occasionally taken to treat kidney stones.
Tamsulosin is available on prescription and you can also buy it from pharmacies. It comes as tablets and capsules.
If you buy tamsulosin from a pharmacy make sure you see your doctor within 6 weeks of starting your treatment to make sure it's OK for you to carry on taking this medicine.
Tamsulosin is also known by brand names such as Flomax Relief and Flomaxtra XL.
Tamsulosin is sometimes combined with other ingredients to treat bladder problems and enlarged prostate. Brand names include Vesomni (with solifenacin) and Combodart (with dutasteride).

I was told to take it at bedtime, due to orthostatic hypotension (I work on a ladder). It actually helps with sleep quality because of the less-frequent trips to the bathroom. I hope that helps someone.

Finally got off that crap. ED, Retrograde Ejaculation and now I'm supposed to have cataract surgery and I find out that Tamsulosin can also cause IFIS or floppy iris syndrome. I have been taking Tamsulosin for 7 years. I take it after dinner. First dose sent me to the ER. Tamsulosin in the evening plus BP pills in the a,m. caused a lower BP. Survived that and ever since no problems. I'm 82 and I still take Sildenafil occasionally. My GF is 78 and she needs me.

Better avoid this and try exercise and watermelon tomato pumpkin seed. I started these recently, seems to get some good result. Will update after 3-4 weeks.

I’m on blood pressure medication, also tamsulosin…. Side effect is I can’t ejaculate ropes like I used to…. Seems to reduce the explosive nature of climax. It sputters and doesn’t feel as good as it used to. I stopped taking it but it becomes very difficult to urinate. Doctor seems to think I shouldn’t enjoy sex at my age but I disagree with that. I have an enlarged prostate, I take tamsulosin and finasteride for it. Last year when I it was diagnosed, my prostate weighed 63.1 grams. I started taking supplements to shrink the prostate 4 months ago. Zinc bisglycinate, copper to balance out the zinc, saw palmetto with pygeum and pumpkin seed oil, cloves and Moringa. I had another ultrasound to see if it has shrunk. To my horror, it now weighs 74 grams. Clearly something is amiss, any ideas?

Very informative, thank you. I have been taking Tamsulosin for many months due to a slightly enlarged prostate and having to pee up to five or six times a night. Never any problems during the day so I take the tablet once a day each evening. I now pee no more than once or twice a night. But since starting treatment I have suffered increasing episodes of heart beat irregularity - palpitations and sometimes mild chest pains, plus poor circulation in my left hand causing daily tingling and mild numbness. I had once 5 minute ECG at the surgery which raised no concerns, followed by a 24 hour ECG 3 weeks ago and I'm still waiting for the results. Some days I have very regular palpitations - "missed" (extra?) beat every four or five beats and slight breathlessness, although I'm active and walk miles. Tamsulosin can cause palpitations in rare cases according to the leaflet, but my doctor told me she had never heard of it causing heart problems. I had two Astra Zeneca covid jabs way back (followed by a booster of Pfizer) and I know AZ has been linked to heart irregularities albeit mostly mild or short-lived. Should I be worried or going to A&E when the episodes are very regular?
@avs4365
@avs4365 Год назад
Hi, and sorry for taking so long to reply - yes have had similar but I suffered a serious neck injury and legs, hands can tingle anyway. As with you had some weird heartbeats at time but find breathing and staying calm helps until it eases off. Found the menopausal sweats difficult but went onto sage and it helped a bit. Often thought about going to A&E at times but I figure if the heart attack happens it happens. Like you have had numerous checks over the now 5 years and at 75 still here so no complaints -symptoms in my case, did ease after the first year - am active and walk for an hour or so each day - so no complaints. Hope you find a way through - No it's not easy Mate - wish you well.

I have been taking Tamsulosin for approximately eight years now since having radiation for prostate cancer. I take two capsules a night 0.4mg each. (Started with one and it was raised to two.) There can be downsides like the stuffy or runny nose issues, dry climax, weird dreams, feeling faint etc. issues. However, the body does learn to adjust to most of them, given the chance. It doesn't adjust to peeing without it. So, the tradeoff is, do you want to wear a catheter and see how well the climax fairs then? Is wearing a bag a better trade off than a stuffy or runny nose etc. You decide, frankly I don't like the side effects, but the alternative is not the better for me. I'll keep on taking the Tamsulosin. Prostate pain is no fun, for such a small organ it can be such a heavy weight on the body and the mind.

@@darylre7935 I agree that having a catheter in is a living hell. Unfortunately my luck with surgery and drugs has been so bad that I’m afraid that I may find myself coming home from my appointment tomorrow with a catheter implanted again.

I’ve been taking Tamsulosin for about 10 years. I had a liver transplant about 15 years ago. Thankfully, I’ve had diminished semen side effects. I take it every night at 10pm. One night about a month ago, I forgot to take it. The next morning I could barely urinate. A couple hours later I had to drive my self to the ER where they inserted a catheter and after an extremely painful morning, I urinated. Do not forget to take your Tamsulosin.

There is a cranberry supplement by Nature’s Bounty and does not appear to have any artificial or natural sugar. I’m going to give it a try. They claim helps maintain a healthy urinary tract. I was drinking and loved cranberry juice but it’s loaded either with cane sugar or artificial sweeteners in the diet version, which I am trying to stop the sweetener/ sugar addiction ( it was much easier to quit smoking 15 1/2 years ago.) Good health.

Thing is when I stopped taking it there was NO change symptomatically. Of cousre the biggest problem with Flomax shows up as dementia in many of the latest studies. Hmmmmm

I just found out that I got Moderate enlarged prostate. Suppose I take Finasteride (or other molecule) for 6 months, will it shrink the prostate? Once I stop taking it, if the side-effects stop, will the prostate get big again? meaning: are the results valid only as long as I'm on medication?

Thank you so much for watching the video and taking time to leave a comment. Unfortunately (and I know this will be frustrating for you), I am unable to give individual medical advice out on this channel. This is because of medico-legal reasons, not knowing your full case, circumstances, and it would be unethical of me to do so otherwise. I have included the general resources I used to make this video in the description box but I have to advise that you speak to your own health provider (e.g. doctor, nurse) so that they can properly assess your case. This is the safest and most ethical advice I can give since this is just intended as a general educational resource. Thanks for understanding.
