As a New Yorker I can confirm to you that they do too much, it doesn’t sound that harsh. This specific type of accent is still apart of New York and we have a lot of words we still pronounce like that, but we sound pretty normal overall.
Amy is great-she knows what she's doing. Ella, good job. I'm from LA but I like the accents of NY. Makes me smile when I visit that area now and again.
I'm a born New Yorker living in North Jersey and I don't speak like that. Our accents are a little more subtle than the Hollywood nonsense most people are used to hearing.
Almost no one speaks with a thick accent any more because we communicate over so much wider of an area. Regional accents are almost nonexistent in people under age 40.
Because modern new yawk accents are not Real "New York" accents Midwestern Transplant Yuppie talk mixed with upper middle class college kids from Ohio Isn't a "new yawk" accent sorry
i'm from brazil and the english language has been a passion of mine since i was 7yo. i gotta tell you something: margot robbie played naomi in the wolf of wall street nailing that accent. since then, i've been passionate about new yorker's way of expressing and THIS is the ultimate lesson. Chee-as!
this is really useful if you're learning an accent for something like a play, but not accurate towards how most people actually talk. i'm here because i'm learning different accents for shows (this one is kinda how they talk in newsies) but i know lots of new yorkers who don't actually talk like this.
Its funny, because in switzerland we "schmiered butter ufs brötli" means but butter on bread. So schmier comes from german over jiddish to new york. I guess in english its written "shmear" or so.
This was so awesome. Ella, you totally have an Aussie accent! I think maybe because you articulate, people think it isn't Aussie, since most of us are lazy with out speech, and even fewer of us have had voice training.
just be yourself , your better off not being someone your not , that way people wont be laughing be hind your back or laughing at you with someone else , just be your self
I've lived in New York my entire life. Born in Bronx, lived in Queens for my childhood, lived in Manhattan for puberty and beyond (11 years old and beyond).
So stupid I'm from New York and I've lived their for a long time and my family history dates back far their i have a New York accent but that's not it and New York isn't one big city barely anyone talks like that but that's a mix of accents from different places
I get it. Southern accents tend to make the speaker seem …well…not that bright. I realize that’s a generalization, but the first time I heard Bill Clinton speak I never would have guessed he’s a Rhodes Scholar!
For all who are "deeply and grossly offended" stop whining and listen to what she says about generations and the accent at 2:30. I was born and raised in Hoboken. I still live in Jersey. I do say "dd" instead of "tt" and "cawfee" instead of "coffee," but I don't say "fawget about it." For the 3rd and following generations, to use the accent is considered a no, no. So over time, it disappears and becomes more general. Also you might not think you have an accent, but ask someone from another state
Guys. This is for voice actors who need to do this accent for a role. It's not meant to be offensive, it's to help people. Jeez, quit your raging it's not a personal attack.
I found Omid Djalili to be one of the best accent based comedians. It's so hard to actually tell he is a Londoner behind all his accents. It's great to see a comedian who can float between African, Asian, Middle Eastern, European, Carribean and American accents so fluidly... His nigerian accents are my favourite. Ella! Do you think you imitate a Nigerian? Or does that go too far?
Ok, then I'm relieved, my internet connection lagged just after she said "g'day, how's it going?" and I was like "What? NYC accent? this sounds like an Aussie accent lol".
Hey, Ella. How would someone fake your accent convincingly, please, hun? I love Australian and New Zealand accents, me. And no, you most certainly ain't losing it, hun. xxxx
It would be cool to hear of what brought you abroad and how it was made manifest and how it has been thus far. And also would you be willing to do a video on the Phoenix, Arizona accent.. what part of U.S. are they from... I agree with the ethnic intonations for sure!! Have you noted this? +rocketboomnyc
I'm a New Yorker and proud of it but I have to say that this accent ONLY seems to be an Italian New York City accent mostly found in the Long Island area. This accent is NOT an overall general New York accent...it's just ONE of the New York accents. I don't speak like THIS but I do say "New Yawk"..."Lawng Island" emphasizing on the "a". =)
I know 4 accents and i can speak them if i wunt and i know the new york accent usa southern accent british accent and french accent and i also can read the old egypt writing and read greek
In the "New New York" since about 1990 or so someone described the new accent just right: "I am a lifelong New Yorker. If you want to speak like me you must talk with intelligence, sophistication and proper diction. You must speak from a well rounded base and be able to comment intelligently on a wide range of topics. And you must speak with the civic pride that is a hallmark of New Yorkers. "
I was born and raised in staten island and I moved down to florida @ a year ago I'm in high school and honestly I have an accent. I mean I dnt go around saying tht forget about it crap bt wen I tlk my accent is pretty noticeable. Yes I say shmear bt honestly shes nt to far off. For kids lyk me who grew up with family members with really pronounced accents from different new york generations you'll find tht you do tlk lyk thay b/c you grew up learning english from people with accents.
I talk like a new yorker that's how i talk this is too funnie when you hear it LOL my accent sounds so funnie lol. I live in florida now and when the florida people hear my accent they make fun of it bc its so different from them I give them a dirty look then laugh lol
I have lived in new york city all my life, i have never once heard anybody talk like that, i only hear that in movies, maybe that was the old generation of new york city, nd there are several different ny accents, it depends on wat part u live, but the most common one i heard nd use is the slang ghetto one lol, nd i have lived in all parts of nyc, actually to be honest it does not feel like an accent, it feels like im speaking proper english with the american accent lol, idk it weird, but its only wen my friends from different states tell me i have a accent that i realizes i have a accent
I'm from New York; and i couldnt stop laughing at this video because she made it seem like we all sound Italian. i do put a "A" at the end of everything mostly but besides that way off.
I definitely felt like people spoke like this in New York when I came the first time, some aren't as bad others I hardly understood. You get use to hearing it though and it sounds less but I'm just saying #Indiana #Tennessee
