Alternate method: Be patient and loving with your bird, don't force something when they don't want, don't cut their wings, let it ride your shoulder...cause they like it. Eventually it will trust and like you and come to your hand, fly to you, sing for you, cuddle with you and be your buddy. Just be nice :) you don't need to dominate a bird.

@@guermanruschke944 except you are wrong. Before I got my cockatiel one year ago I saw this video. Thanks to the many people in the comments section who said it was clearly a bad approach to tame a cockatiel, I did my own research. Birds are prey animals and they're not mammals. A cockatiel won't fly to your head because it wants to be dominant, it will fly to your head or shoulder because he can see predators from there and because it trusts you and feel safe there. Now boundaries are important with animals and if you don't want your cockatiel on your head that's fine. But his mentality is completely wrong and it's a bad approach to have in general. One year later, my cockatiel is now a grown up and he's really social, flies to strangers and let them pet him. He has a small vocabulary, knows 4 songs and is just an overall bliss. Read about it, don't just stop and believe some rando on the internet.

The only thing he got right was that you shouldn't give them attention for negative behavior, other than that I'd warn against basically every single other point in this video. I mean seriously, wonder at how every other instructional video on the subject on RU-vid has people with birds that barely work for the video because they're already too friendly while this guy has one that bites at him every time he comes close. And jesus christ... Imagine having a bird and NOT letting it trust you enough around you to perch on your shoulder or head or whatever. It might work with some people but it won't be a good experience for the bird. The bird needs to have a choice to do things, with a scared untamed bird they think that you want to trap them and you want to kill them. The only reason he was stepping up was because when you push your finger into the bird's chest theu lose their balance and are forced to step up. You should get your bird to step up by slowly introducing the hand to the bird and giving them a choice to take food from it or step onto it. If your relationship is built on trust your bird will want to come out of the cage for YOU and not force so while this might "work" it is certainly not ideal if you want a real bond with your bird.

A relationship with any bird should be built with trust, not colored treats that it doesn't even like. Before taming my cockatiel I had never watched a video on that subject, but I had a really vague idea of how you can do it Our relationship was built with patience and trust, I treated him like my equal. I kept him in the cage for 3 days and just talked to her every now and then, and when I was gone I left the TV on. The first time getting him out of the cage I left him to do whatever he wishes, but not get in trouble (he was very little, and he could only glide) I felt bad when I had to get him back in, because I had to grab him and it's threatening for birds. The second day when I left him out I was slowly approaching him with a perch which he stood up on immediately, then flew after a few seconds I repeated with 5 minute breaks and then getting him in the cage was easy. The third day of going out I slowly introduced my finger, and he stepped up, and then things very quickly grew from there, the same day he would sit on my shoulder, and the day after he would let me pet his head. A few months later he lets me grab him, and soon after that he slept belly up in my hands After that I got him some accesories (a bandana and a hat) and I didn't need to teach him anything cause he just put his head through These days I'm teaching him a song, he's not really getting the hang of it, but he can do it.

It isn't about trust it's about discipline. If you're all "love" and no discipline with any animal or children they will not know what behaviours are bad. If you are talking about parrots then you are correct. Parrots and relatives are flock birds and do not have a pecking order with each other. There are birds with dominance systems though, you clearly have never owned chickens or other members of the pheasant family... Their dominance system is very long and complex, that's why we say pecking order when talking about a system of dominance. Chickens have a pecking order and are very well known for it.

Chris B I just got a cockatiel and I may not know a lot about them but I know enough that your not supposed to “push” into a birds chest or agitate them If they are defending themselves (the biting) There are others ways to get a bird to want to be around you, it’s not gonna want a person who is consistently tiring them out by making them step up 20 times or blowing on the because they ^Are^ Defending themselves. The cockatiel showed a lot of body language that the guy ignored.. The cockatiel was obviously unhappy :/
@Pixiewolf
@Pixiewolf 4 года назад
Chris B How about you read up on them instead and maybe do a little research, bucko! You’d find that cockatiels are prey animals and are very very f*cking skittish (to the point of having night frights and severely injuring themselves if you don’t get there in time and they are freaked out enough to cage thrash). Cockatiels as a whole are pretty forgiving, but if you do the shit this guy shows all the freaking time, your birds not gonna like you. Birds are creatures of habit. This is where depression or feather plucking (form of self harm for birds) stuff happens because people like you think “Dominating” is the way to go. And then these birds end up in shelters because “They are aggressive, and untameable, and a big bad mean bird!” Or people don’t do their freaking research and get them without knowledge of their noise levels or possible destructive habits that could have been prevented or redirected at toys or something of the sort. If they are afraid, they are gonna bite and defend themselves. It’s nothing personal, just a “I don’t understand what you are doing, please back off because it’s scaring me” This cockatiel in the video was obviously handled a lot to even be tolerant of that. Yes. He/she is pretty tolerant to that dudes antics. I had Soba for 4 weeks now... He’s 9 months old and was never handled and he’ll try to fly away before even thinking of biting, which is harmful to him because the place I got him from had his wings clipped and he will fall in an effort to get away or thrash around the cage (I have to wait for him to be in a certain part of the cage for me to change his food dishes without him freaking out.. The less stress I cause him the better!). If I’m being totally honest however, I’d honestly rather him bite and be aggressive than flap around and hurt himself! But that is not how he is.. and I’ll have to work at his pace. Even if he did bite, it would still work this way, since forcing yourself into interacting with you will create a not so great bond. A bond where they will most likely develop or worsen cage aggression, and a bond where they are only interacting with you because “it’s just better If they do what you want but I’ll be more relaxed and safer in my cage”. A bond of stress. The best route for right now is just to go at his pace. Stay hands off till he’s ready to to take that next step. Play music (soba likes MxMtoons, cavetown, soft piano music, budgie taming music, and if on low volume Britney Spears, and Memories by maroon 5) read, slowly get close with him. And lots and lots of millet. I’m also currently working on his diet. All pellets only is just as bad as a seed only diet.. I’m trying to get him to try some chop and get a variation in seeds and millet as everyday treats.

In the wild Cockatiels do not have dominant birds...you should never ever treat a bird as if you are more dominant as this promotes distrust. Always treat a Cockatiel as your equal, always. Any bird really. Birds are companions not pets. You have dominance over pets, but you are equal to your companions.
@SuperMichelleDJ
@SuperMichelleDJ 8 лет назад
Actually, I don't believe in dominating any animal. They must be trained and learn manners, but they are companions, not slaves.
@makenzietibbs2360
@makenzietibbs2360 8 лет назад
+SuperMichelleDJ being dominant over an animal is not necessarily making them a slave....dogs for example, if you look at a pack of stray dogs there is a dominant leader. So even if you try to be equal to a dog, they will still think either you or they are dominant because it is in their nature to either be dominant or dominated. Many dogs that are considered "mean" just believe they are the dominant pack leader. And if you know anything about cats, you know that you only do things on their terms, which is because they believe they are dominant over you. But birds view each other and their owners as equals, if they are properly trained and taken care of. If you try to be dominant over a bird, they will view you as a thing to not be trusted. Thus causing biting and other unwanted behavior
@Blue_Anzu

@makenzietibbs2360 7 лет назад
Robert Sabolcki all I can say is look it up. Cockatiels have no structured hierarchy in a flock. This means that there is no "alpha" or ruling pair. Which also means that you will never find a "dominant" cockatiel. They may have behavioral problems but that is the fault of the owner either a) trying to be dominant or b) not giving them all that they need. If you doubt me you can look up "social hierarchy of cockatiels" or "cockatiel flock behavior" and you will find your answer. But you have to remember cockatiels are birds, not dogs. While dogs RELY on dominance cockatiels will not take your dominance over them lightly. Predators have "dominance" over cockatiels, cockatiels in the same flock (this includes the owner usually) are equal.

This isn't how you tame a cockatiel you have to tame it with patient and love and not force it to step up on your hand, first teach them to eat from your hand, give them some toys to play with (a small ball would do), put on some charming music for it, eventually he or she would trust you and get on your hand he/she might bite in the process but just don't have a instant reaction.

This video made me sad. Ive only had a cockatiel for three weeks and I know this is wrong. My little dude used to bite, but he stopped that within a week because he started to trust me. Biting is their way of telling you that you’re too close and need to back off. This guy acts way too superior to birds. Having a pet is like having a roommate, you have to respect them because you’re sharing your space with them. I love it when my bird is vocal or cuddles up on my shoulder. This info is bad and it’ll make your bird distrust you. Just love your little buddy and respect them.

Magicdolphin30 I think he talks like that about taming. He respects birds but birds are birds, and in order to make them trust you, you should make sure bird does respect you too. If you give them the ability to clim up on you too early, without being tamed, they would just yell and scream and thats all.

Erdem Gündoğdu Erdem Gündoğdu Yes I know but he still acts like hes so above them. I guess I just dont like the way he talks. Maybe hes not like that. I think a mutual trust and relationship would be the best, thats what I have with my bird. I think you can still have respect that way. I still think you shouldn't let your bird climb on your head or things like that, but I dont see why they can't be equals.

The whole NO to bird being on shoulder is actually incorrect and way overblown. Yes people have been bitten, but usually for a reason and in most cases could have easily been avoided. Usually what I see is people that are inexperienced and put bird on shoulder and can see it in their face they are scared to begin with. Shame about it they put their bird on shoulder without any training, or experience whatsoever, all due to they see people like me do it at ease and walk around even at stores with a bird on my shoulder. The thing about it not easy as it seems. I train birds and dogs at one point in my life for a living and had parrots for over 25 years and counting. It takes a lot of training and trust to get your bird to that point. Being a professional trainer in the past and having parrots for most of my life and currently two Cockatoos of my own. The whole dominant and territorial issues can be way overblown. Yes they can be dominant and have territorial issues being on your shoulder. I find in most case it due to the bird bonded with only one, or two people and what causes the issues. You have to socialize the bird to different people to break these habits and when they get territorial you put the bird in time out and don’t give them a reaction. It take them a couple of time to realize it won’t get them anywhere. Then you have teach the bird shoulder a privilege and only granted when they listen. You have to teach the bird when to step down off you shoulder on command. If you do this you have success with your bird being on your shoulder without the worry being bitten. Then remember not all birds can be on allow on shoulder. It depends on their behavior and personality. You have to learn their personality mainly and in most cases then you can see the bite coming and defuse the whole situation. Some birds like Cockatoos are more temperamental then others. Most birds do give off warning signs. Only time they don’t is if they fear, or don’t trust you to begin with. What I call the fear bite. That the one that a larger bird like a cockatoo can sent you to the hospital. Main reason don’t recommend any larger bird to inexperience people, they are not a beginner bird and requires a lifetime commitment.

I will say, with my personal experience, I have owned three cockatiels & a parakeet, at different times in my life, & I was always able to put them up on my shoulder without them being a problem. They were very gentle & it didn't make them anymore noisy. I think it just depends on the personality of the bird.

I know this is an old post but I have to say I got my very first cockatiel two weeks ago. He has a great personality and he will let you know by hissing if he wants you close to him or not. But when I have to put him back into the cage he always argues with me and doesn't want to go back in so I have to get him tired and grab a little towel and throw it onto him so he can't fly anymore to get him back into his cage. I feel this method sucks because I don't want him to be scared even though he does. I wish I could do something better but for now until he trusts me I have to do this. I don't want to keep him inside his cage 24 hours a day because that isn't healthy for him.

My budgie used to bite anyone and everyone. Until one day I had had enough of it! So I asked him to step up, now... he bit me, and by this I mean he realllly bit me. And I DID NOT MOVE, JUMP, OR MAKE A SOUND. I then followed through and pushed gently onto hid tummy and he stepped up.. he never hurt me since. And now we share a lot of time together. Birds bit when they are scared.. so I did not "punish" him and make him even more scared. I followed through, and showed him I would not hurt him. And now we have an amazing trust in each other, and he has not bitten me since, because he is not scared of me anymore, I have gained his trust, by not harming or threatening or punishing the bird. Within one day, I gained the trust from him and him I... this is not necessary, and this is animal cruelty!

I don't want to be an ass but this taming method is very bad for SO many reasons its telling your bird that it should fear you if you're making it unbalanced so it steps of your finger this also tells your bird it cant trust you unless you want to actually enjoy spending time with your bird and create a respecting bond allow your bird to step onto your hand and bribe it with a treat so it knows your not going to hurt it but you want to be trusted. I honestly think this guy has the wrong perspective of taming a bird. Plus training it not to bite its only gonna be scared of you and further training is going to be way harder.

That sound that it makes means it's uncomfortable or bothered, and if it bites you, pet it. DO NOT BLOW ON IT BECAUSE IT WILL FEEL UPSET. Don't bounce it because it could fly off and gt hurt, my sister bounced my cockatiel once because she was playing with him and he flew off and got hurt. Always show signs of love and never try to dominate it, that's not how a relationship works. When it becomes mischievous, pet it and tell it not to do that, shake your head, or shake your finger so that it understands. If a mother raised her child like that it wouldn't grow up to love its mother, it would just fear ot and acknowledge her as its master, not mother. What you're doing is just mest up.

With birds I've always done the opposite, so I guess there are multiple ways of taming. Instead of asserting dominance I aquess dominance. I place the cage next to me and sit down next to it and make eye contact. Then I close my eyes and slowly lower my head towards the ground with my eyes still closed then bring my head back up and finally open my eyes. Then ignore the bird and don't look anywhere near it's direction. Repeat the first step every once in awhile while talking to the bird and eventually the bird comes to me by it's own free will. The eye closing and head Bob trick works with wild birds too. I have a daily visiting Mocking Bird that convienently enough is also very territorial or perhaps possessive of me and chases away the pigeons when I motion towards them and hiss. Of all the birds I've "had" I find the interaction with the Mocking Bird the most sincere and rewarding.

What if you can't even get the bird on your finger? I have a cockatiel who I would say is about 6 years old maybe, and if I'm too late on this I understand. But when we first got him he would get on our fingers, let us pet him, rarely if ever tried to bite. One day something changed and we can't get near him. Any time a hand or finger goes into his cage he immediately gets defensive - backing up and opening his mouth and occasionally going for the bite. We do let him out of his cage but it's like it's on his terms; we just open the door and he comes out when he's ready because again all he does is try to bite if we go to get him to step up. Is there any way to get the old nicer bird back?

Dantheman9000 you have to show them that you love them. If they bite don’t move and do anything then they will know they can trust you. Trust me, I have a VERY stubborn cockatiel that bites me everyday before I used to give it time out, but the situation got worse. I made it clear that he could trust me and then he did and he loves me and I love him. Don’t do what’s in this video. Don’t make your bird afraid of you. Put him on your shoulder. You are both equal he is a friend not a pet help captive

*THE REAL WAY TO HELP BUILD TRUST*: what I did is I talked to my bird for a good few minutes a day or whenever I was walking by the cage and had time I’d sit and whistle, bob my head up and down, ask how her day is, say “I’m a pretty bird”, and if I was sitting by it, I would leave one of the doors open, he also had a big cage, which helped it exercise and feel happy about herself. Also, I hand trained her for a good week straight, she LOVES it on my shoulder, since, she enjoys climbing and flying, also a tip, only clip your birds wings while your getting it used to you. It causes a lot of mental issues with the bird when they cannot fly. Do NOT force anything on your bird! Edit: I’m not doing this to my bird, I could tell from the way your bird treated you it didn’t like you and was stressed. Poor thing.

I and my divorced mother used to raise these critters when I was a boy. I learned so much about cockatiels then. The best way to tame a bird down; is to get a new baby bird and raise it yourself with a medicine dropper; with baby cereal as food. You cannot keep the baby around other birds too much as you raise it. That bird will then grow to see you as its daddy. It will talk to you and even let you pet it. You don't have to tame it down at all. A handfed baby will automatically be tame. As soon as the baby you tamed goes back to being around other birds; it starts to get a wild streak, but the bird never forgets that you raised it. It will come to you in a walk in cage of 20 cockatiels. The other 19 cockatiels will fly around wildly when you enter the cage; but that 20 th one; you raised as a baby, knows you are its daddy. It will remember you, talk to you, perch on your finger...and sing you songs. Kisses come too. The trick is to somewhat isolate a baby bird from population and spend time with it every day. If a baby bird is not available; look into getting hand fed young cockatiels from the pet store. There is such thing as hand fed; young cockatiels. That is the entire secret friends; on this issue. I raised 19 cockatiels; I know what I am talking about. I also invested my own money in building an aviary as a 16 year old boy. The cage was so big; you could walk into it. The birds that we especially liked; we would rob from the nest, and feed them ourselves. That is what made the most tame bird alive. I remember "spuds" that was a handfed chick showing all his gratitude as a adult. It is amazing what I experienced. Even when we released him back with the other birds; he always remember, and showed gratitude through love.

Level 2- fear bite- YOU are to blame, the bird bites and backs up Level 3- defense or just aggression bite- DON’T yell! Sternly say no, don’t raise your voice, only say “hey, no” or “no, we don’t do that” Please don’t be rude with a bird!!

+Figy Figvam When my family first got ours it was a biter, hard enough to break the skin. We just kept it's cage in our living area and would spend a lot of time near her. Then we started just opening up it's cage so it could get out. And again would spend a lot of time next to her. Eventually we could get near her and it would only bite at us but no longer actual biting. Now it climbs up on my finger and loves being petted. It's no longer scared of me. But it will hiss at anyone it doesn't like. TL;DR spend a lot of time near it, eventually it will trust that you won't hurt it.

IMPORTANT WARNING FOR PET BIRD OWNERS: The food that we normally give to the canaries (and other companion birds) consisting of a "complete, balanced and top-quality seeds mixture" bought in pet shops or supermarkets, makes the owners trust that their pet is well fed, but it is not like that: indeed the health of the pets is at imminent and serious risk. The owners of canaries, parrots, cockatoos, parakeets, cockatiels, etc., WE MUST PAY ATTENTION TO DOMESTIC BIRD BREEDERS AND VETS and keep in mind that although we feed them with such a typical seeds mixture, our birds are very likely in danger of suffering an unexpected, painful and practically inevitable PREMATURE DEATH BY FATTY LIVER HEPATITIS. Canaries, for example, will surely die at 4 - 6 years of age of the more than 14 that they can live. It is discouraging that in a time like nowadays, in which food is studied in detail for other pets such as dogs and cats, pet birds are condemned to die painfully and prematurely in so many cases. You have to warn people so they can avoid it! This deadly disease is very common in pet birds but owners usually don’t know or detect it in time. And we can not imagine that THE CAUSE IS IN THE FOOD ITSELF that we provide to our birds, in which such a typical mixture contains low-fat seeds such as canary seed together with other VERY fatty seeds such as niger, hemp or nabine and, in addition, the birds usually prefer to eat the fatty seeds, so that their REAL DIET is unbalanced by excessive fat, gradually causes the fatty infiltration of the liver and in a few years causes fatty liver hepatitis and PREMATURE DEATH to companion birds in general. It is a cruel disease that progresses silently and, when its unexpected symptoms suddenly begin, they are imprecise, easily confused with other ailments, so the owners usually postpone the visit to the vet at a time already critical for the life of the bird (besides that not all vets are trained to recognize this elusive disease, even to administer lipotropic and regenerative liver protectors in curative doses, just in case it is that and not a supposed blow). It's a process of slow and asymptomatic progression, but when their visible symptoms unexpectedly begin (acute phase) the disease accelerates. SYMPTOMS OF THE ACUTE PHASE OF FATTY LIVER DISEASE: First, emotional decay or progressive lack of interest, hard belly (in many specimens, with a dark spot with a half-moon shape on the belly, to see it you have to wet your fingers to remove the down), falls from the sticks of the cage that seem for "errors of calculation" and then lameness more or less accentuated (that make believe that they are by the previous falls, but both symptoms are due to that it hurts the liver), lack of flight and singing, the bird fluffs up his feathers or inclines more or less slowly; Then, within a few weeks and even in a few days, forced breathing with an open beak, remaining lying on the floor of the cage near the food, sudden spasms from time to time (which make people believe that the bird is "epileptic" or which has a "tumor" but it are twinges of pain of diseased liver), abundant greenish stools (caused by biliverdin which if it's not fasting, it means hepatic harm), then black and watery (from hepatic hemorrhages), then a strange somehow purple color of skin and beak, an exaggerated appetite and the final "improvement" of a few days (in the last phase, the already degenerated liver becomes deflated by what seems to be getting better), after which it suddenly dies among seizures (which may seem a heart infarct). For the first symptoms the liver has already degenerated to 80% and only an urgent (and accurate) veterinary action can save your bird and revert the liver situation. If you simply feed your bird with the loose seeds mixture (even if you give it fresh fruits and vegetables and let it exercise, for example by letting it out of the cage at home), right now your pet's liver is degenerating, and neither you nor your bird know. Also the breeding paste and its pigments and sunflower seeds can attack the liver if they are taken too much or for too long. Without liver protectors, it is almost certain that your bird will prematurely die and in many cases you will not be able to determine its real cause. Hepatic lipidosis it's not only deadly by itself when the visible symptoms begin (sometimes even it does not warn at all until few moments before the death). Even before the acute phase it predisposes the bird to suffer infections, as it weakens the immune system. Furthermore, obese pet birds have an increased risk of many other diseases, including arthritis, heart disease and cancer. Obesity in birds it's not so apparent but it's more dangerous than in other animals like mammals. For these reasons, in addition to administering to the birds lipotropic and detoxifying / regenerating hepatic protectors preventatively and routinely, breeders usually make their own mixtures with low fat seeds. PREVENTION AND/OR TREATMENT: The time to act is NOW that your pet does not have yet the visible symptoms. It is necessary to ACTIVELY PREVENT THE HEPATIC DEGENERATION. Fortunately it is easy to do it: You have to substitute the mixture of loose seeds for some pellets compound feed of seeds and fruits / vegetables (preferably those that already include liver protectors), because this prevents the bird from eating mostly what it likes the most and, whatever the diet, it is ESSENTIAL to add every day to the drinking water or to the food a LIPOTROPIC LIVER PROTECTOR that includes the famous carnitine (which is also indicated for humans) and / or choline, betaine, methionine, threonine, lysine (and it is very convenient to supplement with a DETOXIFYING and REGENERATING LIVER PROTECTOR with thistle milk, boldo, artichoke extract). The liver protectors are amino acids, vitamins (of which they have a protective effect on the liver, such as vitamin C), fatty acids and essential oils that remove the fat from the liver, clean it, protect it and favor its recovery. They are cheap food supplements and it is essential to add them to your pet birds diet to conserve their liver. It is something that professionals as breeders and vets know, but we the owners usually don't know. Even, it are increasingly appearing in the market compound feed for pet birds that don’t include fatty seeds and that already include several liver protectors. But the vast majority of owners still confidently feed their birds with the typical mixture of loose seeds with little fat and other very fatty seeds... And their birds continue dying of hepatitis due to fatty liver in a large number of cases (probably, in most cases). Now we know that, as fatty liver disease develops from the daily food itself, it’s most likely THE FIRST CAUSE OF DEATH OF PET BIRDS, and more likely as the bird ages. Some web pages that I have found about it (in Spanish). For example, this page echoes the wrong food situation in which these animals are too often: www.timbrado.com/malnutricion.shtml And on this other page: www.veterinaria.org/revistas/redvet/n111110B/111004B.pdf it’s described that the clinical manifestations of hepatic diseases in ornamental birds are much more frequent than people could imagine and that in many cases they are not appreciated, progress in a silent way and when they are evident, veterinary action may (usually) arrive late. To remark that, in general, practically any avian symptomatology should be considered as if it were a pathology that could be serious, and not allow the disease to develop because then it will probably be too late. To do this, we must thoroughly investigate the symptoms, take preventive measures that do not harm (such as giving liver and intestinal protectors according to the leaflet) ask for advice from veterinarians, breeders, etc. and administer the most appropriate treatment RAPIDLY, but without rushing in the treatment or with the doses in such small animals. If the days go by and the bird does not improve, it is necessary to continue investigating and, if necessary, change the medication in an informed and contrasted manner. Doing nothing or stopping research usually ends up with the bird dead, but acting without being sure of what is done and in what dose, it likely ends the same way. Finally, it is necessary to obtain and confirm the sufficient veterinary experience and have the serenity to determine in each case whether it is convenient to hasten to do and / or administer what medicine and in what dose, or if it is better not to do and let the situation evolve without medicating for the time being, or according to the medication that has already been administered. And that a limp in a bird is not always an injury caused by a blow, but the symptom of a disease of some organ (usually the liver or an intestinal disease) that needs to be discovered and treated as soon as possible. When in doubt, change diet to one with the lowest possible fats (only birdseed, or birdseed with other low-fat seeds such as millet, chia, fresh fruits and vegetables) and administer lipotropic and regenerating liver protectors in curative doses immediately ... although nothing could foreshadow a fatal outcome. Acidcare also has protective properties of the intestinal mucosa and stimulants of the immune system. In doses according to the leaflet do not cause damage and will surely save the life of your bird (if it is not too late). Hopefully these comments will be useful to save your pet birds from an absurd death and to keep them with a basic wellness.

Clipping prevents them from flying far my bird is still flying but she doesn’t fly into stuff you see. You shouldn't make videos like this. I'll tell you why: 1.the wings are clipped from the cockatiel. Clipped! Do you want to cut off your legs so you can't leave? Cockatiels are flight animals and so you take away their natural instinct! He MUST climb from finger to finger, because otherwise he would fall. 2. You are trying hard to give him the papaya? Surely you can tell even at the first attempt that he does not want it. 3. you blow on him because he bites you? Would you also like this if someone sticks his finger in your face and you say "stop it"? 4. to gain trust takes time and you want to achieve it by blowing and shaking? You will only intimidate him! 5. a cockatiel is not a dog and does not know when he has done something wrong and can start with punishment, such as ignore nothing and learn from it. Maybe you inform yourself before you upload such videos and give new inexperienced bird owners such false information! It always hurts me when I see videos of the wrong handling of these wonderful animals. Since I'm glad that my 4 cockatiels are not in their hands but unfortunately too many out there in the wrong.

There are plenty of good resources on how to take care of a tiel, and this isn't one of them. PS. The whole thing about keeping birds on your shoulder is total BS. I’d recommend BirdTricks for any advice regarding taming parrots. Videos like this make me cringe. I have a year old Indian ringneck male and a 6 month old cockatiel and the only way to build trust with a bird is to show them that you AREN’T a threat to them and allow the bird to WANT to interact with you. My Ringneck chews on me like a chew toy but it isn’t out of fear, he wants to be around me all the time but we just have to work towards breaking a bad habit. Only had my cockatiel for about 3 days and the poor thing was traumatized by being grabbed by pet store employees and hated my hands. Slowly building trust by hanging out with him, giving him offerings / treats and working at his pace allowed him to already start trusting me and will now happily step up and groom himself on my hand. “Dominance” training is BS and will only make your bird not want to interact with you. Finding a means of communication is essential to a happy relationship with your bird. Be patient and caring always.

These tips are absolutely horrible. 1) Don’t punish yourself bird. Ever. Any progress you’ve made with it will be ruined as it won’t associate it’s previous action with punishment. Instead, it will associate You as a person with punishment and no longer trust you. 2) You can put your bird on your shoulder. I have no idea why he said that this is a bad thing, birds like high places and a steady perch, both of which your shoulder is. It also associates you and your shoulder as a safe and comfortable place to perch. 3) Your goal is not to “control” the bird. This is a companion pet, not a robot. You cannot expected to be able to complete control over it while having a good bond with it. I wouldn’t listen to this guy

Didnt start off with gaining its trust. NEVER grab a bird from a cage, also DONT shake the bird. The objective of gaining a birds trust is always having a positive experince. The best way to gain its trust is by giving it a treat that it likes. So you want to come in everyday, say the birds name and greet it. Then, put the treat between the bars. If its not taking after 5 or 10 mins, put the treat in its food bowl and try again the next day until it does. Note that this can take a while so please be patient and consistant. Once the bird is taking treats, eventually, you can open the cage, and see if it will come out and take the treat directly from your hands, if so, then put one hand infront of the treat until it hops on the hand infront to get to the treat. Now you have a bird that will come to you. From there on, teach it step up and other tricks with the treat as an insentive. If the bird bites you at all during this process, do not flinch or freat out. Grit your teeth calmly put it in the cage and come back the next day. This truly teaches the bird that it did something bad without being scared it or going through a bad time. Giving the bird positive reinforcement, having the confidense to not flinch or give the bird any sign of control as well as understanding the psychology that goes in a parrots head is key. These guys are very very smart and super self aware. Do not treat them like dogs or cats, and instead, treat them like you would with a person in gaining its trust, especially with the big guys like macaws, aftican grays, and amazons. Im forever having to inform this to people in and out of stores, and AI will continue to do that, as parrots and small birds lay subject to being mistreated simply because the owner doesnt know how to train/interact with the bird, leaving it in its cage doing nothing but eating and sleeping for the rest of its sad life.

I have two cockatiels and I feel so bad for the one in the video. I am not a professional but I can tell that the bird is not happy. One of my birds used to be really shy and she didn’t wanted me to tame her but everyday I would go to her cage and do my best to make her trust me. I would give it space by opening the cage and sometimes I would try to pick her up ( not by “the claw” method but by making her step on my finger). With a lot of patience and time she starters trusting me more and more and now she loves being near me and so do i. I never made the things the guy in the video is suggesting to to do because it makes the bird feel unsafe and scared. In order for the cockatiel to do tricks, sing and be comfortable with you, they need to feel SAFE and believe me, forcing them to step on your finger, blowing on it will not help with that. In fact blowing on them is a terrible idea. I used to blow on their foods to take off the useless seeds that had been eaten and my bird got sick, had to take 8 medicines and is still recovering. Please do your research before following any tutorial on the internet!!!
