I was actually looking into getting a conure, but last time you talked about MyRightBird, I went and took the quiz. It recommended that a cockatiel would suit me better and after a bunch of research, the quiz was right - so guess what I'm getting this sunday ;) Thank you for making me aware of the cute website, Tyler

When I first got a cockatiel I let it sit in its cage for two hours while I was playing on my computer somewhat near it, afterwards I really wanted to get to know it so I took it out and about an hour later it was on my shoulder loving me and letting me pet his head softly, it was really cute. Two weeks later I take it outside with no problem and just hang out with my bird not having to fight it to stay with me. A week after that I take him on a bike ride through a "Green Belt" (a pathway in a suburban type area that looks like a forest but if you walk 50 feet out, there are houses) and no matter how fast or slow I went he just wanted to hang out with me. To me this proves how different birds can be from each other, was it dangerous? yeah probably. But I had bonded with my bird so closely that I was never worried. Of course, I would never recommend this, but moral of the story, I believe that taming a bird not only takes your own pace but the bird's pace as well. I just so happened to get very lucky.

I had to tame my cockatiel. 💕 I got her when I was 8, my parents did a lot of the cleaning and feeding and water changes back then but she was my second pet ever. She was vary skittish and agressive. So I would just sit by the cage and read to her for the longest time. She bit most other members of the family but not me. Eventually I started reaching into the cage but i left one perch as her "safe place" when she stepped on it I would close the cage and wait for her to relax. After a 4 months I had her completely tamed. She even learned a few tricks, she would climb all over my room and sit on my shoulder. I had her for exactly 8 years and then a few days after my birthday a lump appeared just behind her left leg... We scheduled an appointment for the fallowing thursday (3 days after the lump appeared) but the next day the lump was a masive fluid filled sack and we rushed her to the animal hospital. Turns out it was a hernia, they told me They couldn't operate because of her age and the position of the abdominal tear. They drained the sack and sent me home with a bunch of pain killers to give her. They told me that if her condition worsened, or the sack changed color It would be best to bring her back and have her put down. I had to bathe her twice every day because the poop would dry on the hernia. It was the best part of her day because she got to relax in the water and take the weight off her belly. 3 days of this tho and I finally I cracked and scheduled the appointment to have her euthanized. She was my best friend for so long that I told myself I'd never get another bird. . Then... A few months before my 21st birthday I changed my mind and started looking into English Budgies (still not sure when or if I'll ever adopt another cokatiel). My parents, also bird lovers, missed my cockatiel so much that the offered to get the budgie for me for my birthday and we ended up adopting two of them from a local bird rescue/sanctuary. . They are far from tame right now, but I read to them every day... They bring an entirely new light back into my life but I still miss my baby...

If you’re considering getting a bird (RESEARCH!) *definitely* consider adoption there are SO many birds in shelters and foster homes that need a permanent home. Birds are the third most abandoned pet & 85% of parrots are re-homed after only two years of being “adopted”/bought. Parrots are pets that require *a lot* of attention and special care, because they’re still wild animals. If you research bird/parrot care before buying/adopting, they can be lifetime companions that will love you so much.

@existentialcrisis5169
@existentialcrisis5169 6 лет назад
Get A Penguin Exactly, houseofhades had it right. Sometimes (actually quite often) it takes a while for birds to warm up to you. I’ve heard of cases when it can take months or even years before a bird isn’t scared around their human. The best thing to do is take it slow. It’s better to have a slow and steady bonding time than to try and rush it, because your bird may get frightened and you’ll have to start over again. They have to get past the stage where they think you’re a predator and then they also need to accept you into their “flock”. Parrots have the mental capacity, like humans, to be picky in who they like or dislike. Occasionally, birds will never warm up to you. But, if you’re the main caregiver and spend a few hours a day with your bird (give him/her treats when your there so the bird associates you with good feelings), it shouldn’t take long (unless you or a previous caregiver has traumatized the bird in some way) before it likes you. Remember: research, take it slow and spend lots of time with your bird!

Bird Flight- My kitchen and living room are also one connected space. I am very careful about turning on the fan on my cooktop when cooking on the stove or in the oven to minimize any fumes. When it comes to birds, it's all about building and gaining trust. And from that trust can you develop a loving, bonded relationship with your bird. But, it takes a long time to build trust, and you can NOT rush it. It all has to be at your bird's pace. It took me years to develop the loving, bonded relationship I have with my green cheek conure (who still hates everyone besides me lol). You have to understand that most birds come from traumatic situations that they were imprinted with, unless they were hand raised from a loving breeder (which usually is not the scenario). It takes time, but be patient and compassionate to your bird and it's needs.

I got a green check recently and he’s adorable! He likes to either sit on top of his cage or fly to my shoulder (He spends all of his cage time trying to push the door open!) The only issue is that he is extremely bitey (major takes skin off bites) He is absolutely not afraid of me (which might be easier to be honest) and he’s super happy about sunflower seeds and cantaloupe. I love him but I want to pull my hair out lol

Hi! I got a love bird around 6 months ago. He was very much quiet the first month. Literally thought the birb was broken 🤣. One day he was in his cage and in my room and a song was playing- he suddenly started to scream and just a bunch of different noises. Slowly he began to scream, for songs or when we talked or when he head other birds outside. Later he figured out how to open his cage and fly out. We had to catch him every night tho. Then we pegged the cage door and let him out in the morning and taking him back in by night. He eats anything- actually even stuff we eat. He always sits on my shoulder when I'm getting my food, or just wants to see what I am up to. The only thing is he is scared when I approach him. Sometimes he ate from my hand but then recently he flies off. I watched a bunch of videos and realized I have not been taking good care if my bird, and now I know I should be doing. But what more can I do?

With my experience it's very hard to tame a bird when it's old. When a bird is about 10-12 months old, that's when they start to get aggressive or more cautious. When a bird is young and not that aggressive, that's when you start to play with them and bond with them. If your bird doesn't want to go out or interact, that's maybe because you didn't introduce yourself when you first got them. If you just got your bird, let it settle for a few hours and then that's when you interact. Keep in mind when buying an old bird that's not tamed or handfed, the process will take longer. Let them settle, don't wait a week but instead immediately introduce yourself to them when they seem calm. Be gentle and spend time with your bird with it in it's cage. Remember to be patient, every bird is different

He liked to play, he understood the context of words he was taught, he liked to make people laugh, he was toilet trained, ect... They are an incredibly smart animal and people underestimate their intelligence when getting then as pets

I know this goes against people who are totally against pet stores, but I have found that the time with my local pet store has been imperative in choosing the right bird for me. I went to my local pet store 4 different days where they hand hand-reared baby birds who were constantly loved on and given all of the toys they could possibly want. I was thinking to myself many thoughts when trying to choose a bird like, "Wow, this macaw is so cute-ouch, he keeps biting me," or, "Oh, she is so cute but I'm not really in love with her." It took 4 times for me to go there, often spending multiple hours watching and petting the babies, until I found this one black-headed caique who seemed instantaneously attached to me. Obviously, I fell in love with her and the rest is history. This experience has shown me how important it is to really spend time and know the bird and her personality before you purchase it. You might be thinking you want a Hahn's macaw - like I previously did - and you might find that they really aren't suited for you. If you really want to know what you want in a bird, go to the seller or adoption agency and spend time. Enjoy yourself. You will know when the right bird comes along. You won't choose them; They will choose you.

My Bird, Ollie is almost a year old, so we have been together for a long time, he trusts me to feed him with my hand and to step up on my hand, he likes to be pet, the grooming place still isn't gonna be trimming wings for a while so I hold his back carefully and hang out by his cage to keep him from flying. He still can bite and doesn't trust me too much yet. The main issue is that I am the youngest / smallest (kid) so Ollie tends to look for my older brothers if they are in. Me and my family loves Ollie, and Ollie loves us too, so we are doing great so far, thanks for giving all these tips! Quick Edit : Sorry if this is a bit too long for some of you to read.

If it won't step up and just bite/attack you or fly away, you can try and dim down the lights to the point where you can barely see the bird but it can't see you, now get it to step up normally with the command and put it back in... I think this works because the bird will be a bit hesitant to start flying in the dark and they won't fight back because they don't know it's your hand. Youre welcome
@paytonhubert8808

Jamie Yutzy if you have a lot of time don’t handle the bird... put their favorite treat in there cage and they’ll probably get bored after a while and wander in. If you don’t have a lot of time get there food bowl and they’ll usually step up on it and you can get them in the cage. Hopefully this works for you!

Letting my 2 parakeets out of their cage was such a great way of taming. And I found, as you said, it was 10 times easier for them to step up. After about two times of saying ‘up’ and putting a little pressure just above their feet, they were perching in my finger just by me saying ‘up.’ Twice Ace, my parakeet, flew around and landed on my head! He chilled there for awhile before migrating down to my shoulder. The tips really helped, and now they are becoming easier to handle! Thanks again! 🦜🦜🐾🐾

took me 3 months for my bird finger remover to finally chill out and not attempt to deglove my finger. hes great now. i actually just bought a small bird stand would let him out of his cage and let him just go and do what he wants got a training stick just to have him climb up on it since he didnt like hands. i got the small stand for him to stand on and just carry him around the house to where ever i would go. then started feeding him sunflower seeds and snack occasionally learning what he likes and doest food wise. noise wise watching his sleep pattern normally they start yelling late at night if they wanna sleep at least mine do if there on my shoulder. two green cheeks conures . both males and i think they are bonding unsure but see lots of attempted feeding mouth wise im the ones that jealous now.

My tip might seem bad and maybe evil, but in dire situations where the bird is really hostile or evasive, my tip worked. If you have a trouble bird, try getting it into a situation where it is not capable of getting out, or something he needs help to do. Get stuck, and more, but without them knowing you did it. Then proceed to save them and give them treats and reassuring words. They will associate you with being safe/secure. Only use this if there is no other way, some might think of it as animal abuse.

Michael Leon just don't allow them to be in the same room with each other. Causes unnecessary stress and introduces a possible dangerous situation should your dog get ahold of the bird.

6 months ago I got a budgie. My budgie is fully trained. We leave the bird cage open and she always flies everywhere. First of all to make your bird happy, buy it a lot of toys. The toy that matters to me is a mirror and a swing. Next is to be gentle with it all the time. My tita (aunt in Tagalog) had wild birds but they flew away. My cousin really loved my budgie and decided to get one. Now she has a cute blue budgie. First of all my other tita tried to force her to go on her finger. She’s not anymore. I hope. Next I named their bird hurricane. How I figured out with the name is they named it tornado then I gave this name suggestion. Don’t be scared with your first budgie. It will not bite it’s too shy

********** ######### I'm taking my birds out of the cage daily and now we actually get along! They'll let me pick them up, hand feed them and put them. So try taking them out of the cage for 2-3 hours a day, so that you can bond with them.

Budgies are so different in trusting people. I got a budgie and he was so nice and tame after one Week i could touch him and he sat on my head and fingers. A few month later we bought him a little buddy and he was scared of everything. He never got tame and just when entered the room he was so scared and was hiding and flew away.

Ive had a hans macaw that only let me pet him without trying to bite, an african grey that wouldv say,"come here" and tilt his head for u to pet it but then he would snap his head up and try to bite and then laugh. I also had a cockatiel that was grey and white with the yello w crest and orange feathers over his ear. He was very sweet. He *LOVED* strawberry flavored yogurt covered papya pieces. Then i got a younger cockatiel (light yellow with orange ear spots) and she was very fiesty(she was very young she didnt have all of her feathers yet and i she is now old enough that she just laid her 1st egg a few months ago). She wouldnt let you touch her but if you started to leave the room she starts loudly chirping/screaming at you and want you to stay and talk to her. No matter how much i tried to socialize and handle her she wouldnt let me. She was my wild woman. 😊 I've tried all of the taming techniques i could find. The female cockatiel(Radar) also had a habit of grabbing a piece of food and carrying it over to her water bowl and eating on her water bowl. She would then proceed to drop 50% of the food she tried to eat into her water dish....

I'm so glad I found this video. I've been trying the treat this ng and is has helped. I just inherited and pineapple conure and a Quaker parrot. It has been a different experience. I already have a macaw and we've living together for 10 years. We kinda of are a stalemate. He tolerates me. If he could find another human to run away with he would. Needless to say I've made a lot of mistakes with him. He was my very first bird ever. So with these two I'm trying to get it right. I've had them for about a month now and they really want to be where I am but don't really trust me. Just giving it time and lots of treats. Doing the same with the macaw. It's never too Male for him to like me again. Thanks for posting.

I really appreciate this video I just got a sunconure and her name is echo and she is 4 months old and apparently she was hand trained before we bought her and I really appreciate this because I was getting worried that she didn’t like me but after this I realized I actually did almost all of those steps her cage is in the family room and on weekends the second I wake up I go downstairs change her water and open her cage and I allways give her peanuts or oranges when she goes on my hand or shoulder sometimes my head thank u so much for putting my worries at ease btw on school days the second I get home I open the door the only thing I need to do is spend a ton more time with her one time I laying down on the couch for like a hour watching a movie and she was just sitting on my head it was so great anyways thank u so so so so much really appreciate u u should be like a bird handler or bird teacher ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️😭

With my last birdie (peach faced lovebird), I found that other pets can really get to a bird. I have three cats, yes I know great combo, but they were pretty trustworthy, and if the cats were around at all, Dover would get all prissy and attack my hand (or ear lobe) like her life depended on it. So my advice to everyone is to make sure to train your other pets as well. Keep them at a distance until they earn some trust with each other.

Hi. I realize my cockatiel is special needs and this might be beyond your experience, But what do I do when my bird cant fly? She is missing a leg and when we set her down on the grass whenever we clean her cage, she won't ever fly. So we know she isn't able to due to balance issues I guess. She never leaves the cage, we leave it open all the time and she is extremely aggressive to anyone passing by. I'm doing my best to ingratiate her to me so I'll be patient.
