Jacks are the masters of snags and can be found in various types of water and around different forms of structure. Mangrove lined creeks and estuaries, canals and offshore reefs can all hold these angry red fish at various times of their lifecycles and with that in mind, they’re often encountered by mistake.
With that in mind, a first encounter with a jack is often short lived. A snap of the rod, a steaming drag and then a ‘pop’... that seems to be a common scenario when fisho's are undergunned or unprepared. Oh, and jacks have a nasty habit of claiming ownership of fancy new lures.
