I loved the topic and would like to add my two bits to it.. My son, he is 6 now, and can speak Kannada and English fluently. Usually its seen that boys start talking late, when compared to the girls. He didn't talk much till 16 months and suddenly picked up words and now can't stop talking. My experience tells me that, the more they hear, more they talk, because over and over again they hear different words and slowly start recognising what each sound means. Be more descriptive while talking to the child, even if he can't talk or answer, for example, while showing a car, say Red Car.. Or blue sky.. Something that describes the object.. And let him touch various surfaces, texture and you can teach him, words like smooth, rough, hot, cold all practically.. It will be easy for him to associate certain words with certain things. I have observed that he has an affinity towards words, and I try and use some new words. He asks for the meaning and starts using them almost immediately. Kids can learn many languages simultaneously. And yes, you have mentioned it here and I completely agree that each child is different.. Some kid will start walking early, some kid will be talking early and some get potty trained when they are young.. Does not mean that if you're child isn't speaking at 2, he has some issues. If his other developmental milestones are met then no need to panic. Many times in a nuclear family, where mom is the only person they live throughout the day and she does not speak much, the child hardly gets to hear words, and that may result in his delay in his speech development.. So its nature plus nurture and each child is different so e can't have one yardstick to measure it all..

Very well explained Roli , and one thing I noticed , children do pick words more quickly when they interact with other children ,specially at play school , nursery.Even neighbours children or parks would be helpful

So true. First daughter I was home all day every day and I would sit her in my lap and talk about everything on my mind. She said first word “pretty” right before her first bday. Then before two she surprised me by saying words like minuscule. It’s such a good thing to do for your baby

Very Interesting video. I have a 9 month who talks many words already and i think it is because like you i talk talk talk like he is a grown up, well almost. I emphasise more than to a grown up, i read alot to him and also give him opportunity to speak. A good tip for me was showing him alternatives asking what he wants. Usually though he just says mom when he wants something now since he is so young but i always say water when he drinks water for example and then he can repeat alot after me.

Totally agree. And its good to read the same books often so they make word associations. Also at this age kids pick up more than one language easily, because they don't know that they are different languages, they just know words. I find my little one saying "Box, dabba" like how yours says "pani, water". Its so interesting to see them learn.

What I think people need to understand is that babies are all different. For example, my son was speaking at four months saying mama, etc. By the time he was not even 10 months he was walking. By the time he was two, he had the vocabulary of a five year old. But, my daughter is one, and she only speaks using about four or five words, and by that I mean, she says "kitty". And, she can walk, but mostly just holds on to things still and does the crab crawl. So, this taught me that quite literally, every child is very different. My daughter is bright in different ways than my my son, but I'm not going to be freaking out thinking about why she's not talking much, etc. There's nothing wrong with a child who takes more time, honestly.

Joint family is a key to it...when there r so many ppl in the house and specially I have seen ur whole family including baa speaks,sings,play with Aryavir constantly. Good tips but trust me even u spoke few baby words to Aryavir like ghoom ghoom Jana hai n etc.so it's ok take a chill.Sometimes enjoying is more important then just being a teacher to ur kid.

christine ragnath I used to do it also but I tried as much no to and my daughter talked a lot later on. I had people tell me she talks so much for her age. I always helped her pronounce words and her talking clearly helped communicate easier helping me know what she wants

Good points. Also encourage mother tongue. I see many parents in india only speak in english. They will pick it up in school. Mother tongue is natural for them. That should come first. Plus instills some pride.

dg383 very true , I had relatives asking me ,Oh they speak in Konkani ( mother tongue ) and they don't speak english . My thoughts were clear I dont mind as long as they speak. Being in Goa they will speak in Konkani ,its so natural

Great tips. How to make the grandparents understand the importance of talking like a normal person when talking to your baby? When I tell them they simply tell me “see our children turned out perfectly fine”. It’s so difficult to do your style of parenting in a joint family.

I live in a joint family :) . I usually end up correcting the child if the child is talking baby-ish . And when the child starts talking a bit, I say “look he is speaking nicely, let’s talk normal to him,”etc . What I observed is that with the older generation you have to show them a bit of result first. Make sure you and your husband are on the same page

I am a mother of 2 yeat old baby boy. My baby make so many sounds like amma, baba , tata but if he wants only n it is very less. He do not even call me mama. If i talk to him also he does not immitate but just give response in expression. He is understanding ehat i talk but hr does not feel like talking. What i can do for him. He watches rhymes from one year old in tv. So does it effect his speech.

Please consult your paediatrician , it sounds like a speech delay and needs to be treated and consulted with a speech therapist. At 2 years of age your child should be speaking more, however you do say that he is able to use his expressions to communicate, which is brilliant ! A professional can guide you better, please consult your paediatrician. Till then :how long does he view TV ? If he is watching TV more than 20min a day, then its not good. If he is watching TV more than one hour a day, then this could be a major reason. TV not only makes the child sit without learning it also makes YOU speak less. Please cut off TV/Screen time .

My baby is suffering with same problem...consult to a doctor immediately...Autism ka problem baby boys mai hota hai ..ek baar autism ki video you tube pe daliye apko sab samjh aa jayega...apne bache ke symtom match kariye agar asa hai tou abhi se counseling lijiye...jaldi detect kar loge tou jaldi recover ho jayega sab...

I started teaching him shapes a little late, infant we still haven't learnt them a lot. Start whenever you are comfortable you can start talking about shapes from day one, they pick up really quickly :) Just keep repeating

Hi Roli. As a speech therapist and Audiologist I second you on all your tips. It has become a recent trend for parents to bring their children to us with speech delays. A lot of times this is because of either too much screen time or the fact that parents don't really talk to their child and model proper speech and language. Kudos to you!

jenni fer hi there. try to slowly cut down on the screen time. Moderate the time and try other books and games. My niece also (in spite of being a chatter box) loved to watch the ipad. But when she was younger they would slowly switch off the WiFi in the house and get her to do other activities. Although this may not work when they're older kids but it's a really nice excuse for younger ones. Also don't be scared of your child throwing tantrums when you don't give screen time (at least when you're at home as I'm sure it gets embarrassing when you're at a public place). Finally, I'd like to add that I'm not saying that all kids who get screen time end up with speech delays. How much of screen time and how language stimulating your other activities with the child are important. If you're watching Roli's videos then they're a good example on the parent child interaction.
