Oss sensei. Somewhere this video made me emotional sensei. 10 years ago I wanted to be a professional martial arts teacher. But when I became an instructor , I faced the hard reality. My senior sensei use to tell me that I should be strict and very firm with kids. But that was not my style of teaching. I always believed that fear is gained but respect is earned. I believe if the kids can't love me they will never love my classes and will never love martial arts and in the end fear is not respect. And some masters teach martial arts for money and not for real teaching. Even though I don't have my own house and living in rent for 23 years now I never wanted to earn money by teaching martial arts. I wanted to teach martial arts because I love karate. And maybe I'm living a poor life but still I'll never teach to earn money. Martial arts is not a source of income, thats what I personally believe. And I'm have a very tough time now but still I believe 1 thing. You can't sell your love! Or share your love in exchange of money. Love is respect. And for me Karate is Love. After watching Sensei's videos I realised that I was right. I feel very lucky to be a part of Jesse Sensei's RU-vid follower. And though we never met but still I'll always call him my Sensei coz he taught me so many things. Sensei if you are reading this I just want to thank you for motivating me through your videos. Teaching martial arts is surprisingly difficult, everybody likes to be a smartass and to show off in front of the newbies, but very few can deliver the message in a humble and easy to understand fashion. Great job mate!

I'm preparing for my instructor degree in september, I teach kids and adults classes every saturday morning. This video only confirms some things that I came to understand lately through my little experience of teaching: humility (especially when you're teaching your friends) and striving for perfection. Martial arts instructor here... I decided to watch this video because I have been doubting myself along with my teaching and instruction. I can relate to many things you said here. Ive been doing Kendo for 13 years now and i am very passionate about it. I started instructing beginners after a while and now i am the head teacher. And knowing the "why" can only be achieved by challenging yourself and what you have learned. In that process i found my personal Approach to the Art which is great.

I was just looking for a video like this from you! I wanted some tips, because I’m going to start leadership training at my dojo (which includes helping with the kids), and eventually become a teacher there! This is literally all I’ve ever wanted since I was a seven year-old watching “Karate Kid” as often as I could. I finally started taking classes last year, but for me, my journey didn’t start there. I was a Karate-ka long before that when I was mimicking Mr. Miyagi (and later on, you) trying to learn all I could, searching on RU-vid, trying to teach myself ‘till I could finally take classes. Now can’t believe that dream’s coming to realization! (And to think it only took 9 years) Thank you so much for this video and all of the inspiration/knowledge you’ve given me. I plan on, within the next couple years, going to that annual seminar you do (the one with the pink belts). Well, we’ll see. Domo arigato goziashimas! 😊 Edit: YES!! Sorry, so excited. So, I just talked to my sensei and he wants me to start helping with the kids class on Wednesdays, (not teaching as a job, just like a junior helper training to teach someday) so I would be doing that an hour before my class that day, and instead of just sitting around for an hour my sensei said that I could just jump in the Kobudo class (which I planned on doing eventually anyway) FOR FREE!! 😁 👏I'M👏SO👏EXCITED👏!!!

What u said about being a professional really was an eye opener for me. i have been teaching karate since last year and i learned a lot from teaching but i got busy with my own personal life and kind of neglected my duities an now after listening to your definition of a professional i kind of get it that i had the wrong mindset all along I hope that i can build a proper mindset and keep on teaching karate

Hi Jesse, though I do not practice Karate, but I agree to what you said in the video “The best way to improve your martial arts is to practice another martial arts because when you actually done something for a long time you become blind to it. You can rediscover concepts or principles in another arts then you will see those in your own art but before you couldn’t see it”. I mainly practices Kali and Taekwondo but I do dabble in Kuntau Silat, Muay Thai, Kapap and Brunei Silat. It helps me see the differences and similarities in the different arts and their strength and weaknesses. I really enjoyed your videos very much!

Nicely done on the seminar. Here is another phrase that you may like. Remember the saying: "practice makes perfect" I had a great instructor in the 90's who pulled up someone in the class for saying exactly that. He went on to say that "perfect practice makes perfect" His reasoning was that you may practice & practice & practice but if you don't strive to improve on your technique, then you will still have sloppy technique years later as you are only practicing sloppy technique. It has stuck with me since that day.

And the simplicity and clarity to import that wisdom.

A few weeks ago, my Sensei and i had a conversation and he wanted me to become the new teacher of his class. He wanted to take a step back and the pandemic would be the right Time to do so. I am a assistant or "Co-trainer" for a few years now and i'm struggeling a bit because of this new Kind of roll i suddenly have to fit in. I Always tried to give the students a good Time, have a laugh or two an teach them the way of the japanese sword. Everyone liked it, but now i've had the feeling of changing things, because i'm something more "official". But watching this, hearing your words and reflecting about my time as a assistant teacher, i realise, that i don't have to change anything. I've starting learning martial arts when I was a kid. I always loved it and dreamed of being a teacher, like a real sensei. I'm an instructor, I've helped teach woman's self defense seminars, blind students and a bunch of awesome kids. But I have yet to get my black belt because of being in and out of training and having 3 kids. So it can be discouraging sometimes. Your video and you in general Jesse are very inspiring, thank you very much *bows*

I'm a Dentist and I just started my Karate classes with only 8 pupils at the little coast town where I live, this is far from the city so is completely something new here. No money in between, at my small dojo in my patio .. is my social proyect to make better persons in this small town .. keep youth away from bad habits ... Very inspiring, nice and simple explained. Besides you are obviously marshal arts expert, I think you are also excellent instructor, coach and teacher and, I also think, very normal person. Being paid for your work in completely normal. As you said, it is important what you give back to people for being paid, even for me the money is not the biggest issue, it is imported to try to fulfill people expectations as best as possible. Professionalism, for me, means first to really know what are you doing, and after that to do that as best as you can, like as you doing it always for yourself, and not to be selfish and vain... This is maybe not easy, but it makes the difference and gives every teacher (in any field of activity) opportunity to be really (but really) respected.
