Could you please list the research you are referring to?

Yes! The step-by-step process mentioned in the video is from LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling). Another great text is Building Academic Vocabulary by Robert Marzano. Gamez & Lesaux (2012) have newer research out about using academic language in the classroom and how it affects student vocabulary growth. In terms of how many words should be taught explicitly, the number I shared in this video is based off Biemiller's work in 2009 (Teaching Vocabulary in the Primary Grades) - you can find this online to read and it has a BUNCH of great information!

Thank you so much. I’m homeschooling my twin grandchildren and your tips help so much. They both love learning and using new words.

Thanks god we have kindersarten online. I got rit of my learning kids, however seems that are always new kids online that wants to replace your kids and be students instead of finding the right personal for their level. I dont know what to say anymore, it is intoxicating to speak with other´s kids , especially when they have such poor vocabulary. I d prefer that I talk with my natural kids, instead to educate others online... Be aware of your skills, dont became pedagog if you dont like kids....Change your homeschooling instead to an online school, with real tutors suited for your level,

Wow, as a new teacher for kindergarten I must admit it’s a bit daunting to think of explicitly teaching 10 to 12 words a week. In addition to the common exception words and phonics we already have to do. It’s definitely good for thought. I think I will aim for 5 a week - so 1 a day and add them into our literacy stations. Thanks as always for your highly informative videos, I look forward to them each week.

This was so helpful thank you, I teach first class in Ireland and currently teach 10 words per week but will introduce some of the techniques you have shared to reinforce these new words and will definitely be putting up a WOW display in my room to help familiarize my students with their new words from week to week, thank you so much 🙂

In reading our vocabulary words are from our Read Aloud Story. Our grade level started to focus on 2 words to teach explicitly and give the students an assessment on these words at the end of the week. Some of my first graders have been writing longer sentences. Their sentences have shown me that they have taken ownership of these vocabulary words. Also, I want to mention that you have a spelling error in your video.( the one with the 3 words-unknown is spelled incorrectly). This is a great video! Thank you. Caroldyne

ّI started with 10 words. I’m planning to reward them with insensitives. I used the app. Quizlet to check for understanding. Now, the councilor is involved and he will randomly select a word during lunch and check for understanding. I shared with him live document contains our week words.Families were involved too. 😊

I love your seasonal Close Reading Passages that are found on TPT. Using these would be a great way for teachers to jump into teaching vocabulary and comprehension. Your packs for each season have 5 fiction and 5 nonfiction passages. It would be easy for teachers to start here and then expand to their own read alouds and choose vocabulary words that are best for their class. Using them is like taking a mini PD in how to choose words and teach them.

1st grade. I use our unit planner to get a phonics concept for each week and find the corresponding word list on my fav teacher site. Our list are 10 words.

Wonders. 5/week. I'm a student teacher, and this is the system that is in place in the classroom.
