I love this! My dog knows "look at me" but when it comes to distractions and doing Rally, we're still working on this and you had some useful tips here that I will try out. I was rewarding from my treat pouch in so many areas of training my dog! The other struggle I have is with loose leash walking. I'm teaching him to walk besides me without needing to feel the need to look at me at all times like when we are "heeling". Poor little guy thinks he needs to look at me the entire time so I try to say "yes" and give a treat at varying times. It's still a work in progress though.

My dog did this while walking! I was practicing walking properly on a lead. I thought why not try this little trick, and she did it straight away, it was her first time ever hearing the command. Very proud

What I love is you also tell us what not to do: don’t look behind you😂 Brilliant example for out & about!

If my dog is maintaining eye contact for an extended period, do I just say ”Yes” and reward her every few seconds or should I wait for her to break it and then refocus her again?

What about a dog who cannot stop looking at and being focused on a person or a dog approaching from a distance away and going away until not seen??

This is such an underappreciated skill.

Thank you for your great tip! I am working on this because I think this is the basic and key step for further trainings.. But my dog might have been reinforced by treat..? it's hard to tell that she is looking at me or the treat in front of my face. What should I do to make sure she focuses on me?

Not sure if anyone still here to help, but I’m wondering the (usual) time frame as to when these transitions from one step to another taken place? For instance transitioning from with the food in hand to having food on pouch, etc. I’m sure it varies dog to dog, but in general, how long to master the steps in “Look at Me?” Hours, days, weeks? Thanks much!

Thank you!!!!……… I have recently got a rescue dog which loves his food and find it difficult with him jumping up from a sit to receive the treat before I can get the treat to his mouth, he is a papillon so a small dog..... can you direct me to a vid where you may have covered this. PLEASE HELP. I'M FOSTERING A 1.5 Y/O FEMALE DOBERMAN W/DOG REACTIVITY & I'M WORRIED ABOUT HER FUTURE (I don't think she is adoption ready...but she is listed for adoption) I have fostered dogs for years & am currently fostering a 1.5 y/o F Doberman. I'm worried for her, so I put her through GROUP obedience out of my pocket. She completed the 6 weeks & her socialization is still the main issue (which is why I chose GROUP class). Oddly, she lives with a male Weim-GSP, & female Am-Eng bulldog & 2 cats (does fine). She won't look at me on command. When she is distracted she intentionally avoids my eyes, & death stares at her target dog (in obedience & on walks at home...she's A BIT less reactive when instructor brings us outside for loose leash training) She improved with people reactivity BUT her dog reactivity is AWFUL. She made small progess with big dogs & NO PROGRESS with the little schnauzer in the group class (EVERY class, multiple times she zones on the schnauzer & LUNGES, GROWLS, FROTHS). She's on a Herm sprenger & she hurts herself, gets frustrated & just spirals for a good 20 seconds (feels like eternity) before she goes in a sit (she doesn't relax, she is still clearly amped). We're redoing the 6 week GROUP class. She knows the commands, I need her have coping mechanism & impulse control around other dogs. Do you have any advice on how I can stop the reactivity? It happens on leash walks too? I try to be proactive, but she knows EVERY house with a dog & the group class has dogs & becomes amped. I put her in sits, body block, "look at me" but she sits waiting me out (I have to go in the classroom &finish my dog walk, so it ends up with her hurting herself by herm sprenger correction pops or just lunging AS I tell her leave it) I have done this group class (1 & 2) with another dogs needing socializing & it's a great company with a good syllabus, spacious class etc."

I have an 8 week old Pom, and he will often run up, sit in front of me and stare at my face. I always tell him “Good boy” and fuss over him when he does it...but should I be rewarding him with a treat as well? He does it so often and without prompting that I’m unsure if I should keep acknowledging it. Thank you so much, I have learned so much from this channel!!

I'm going thru all your videos about how to get a dog's attention. I have a client that wants me to train her 8-month old puppy. He has no attention! He actively avoids eye contact. In addition, I have yet to find his motivation. He is not interested in treats or toys or affection. Tough case!

So i have a old recue dog 8 years i have been with it for 2 monts but he really doesnt cara for treats what then?

Currently, when an unfamiliar dog approaches my dog wanting to interact with my dog, my dog goes on the offense and lunges at the dog to tell the dog to go away. In order to change this behavior, II want my dog to look at me when an unfamiliar dog approaches and let me tell the unfamiliar dog to go away. Do you have any other suggestions?

How would you teach a deaf dog to look at you?

What age do you recommend working on things like this? And other basic commands? We just brought home our puppy, hes 8 weeks old. I just saw another channel that said he doesnt really start with training until they are over 5 months old. At this point they are just basically rewarding "accidental good behavior" but not asking too much of them yet. What are your thoughts?

I really need help on how to keep my dog quiet at night, he cry all night, if his not anywhere near human,he had to sleeps inside the room then he stop crying, how do i get him to stop crying at night, and stay calm until i go and get him from the play pen...

I can't tell if my dogs eyes are actually looking at my eyes unfortunately. They're just black..

Instead of saying "Look at me", could you simply say your dog's name and reinforce that they look at you at the sound of their name?
