We really like using this skill as a "starting position", or a position where they can be in a safe place when you're in a busy environment! I hope you find this video helpful with your four-legged family member. If you're currently training your dog, you'll want to check out our Grade 1 students playlist that features some of the resources we share with our obedience students: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5rVgHLnt4W0.html for watching! Happy Training! ~Ken
I am going to try this my new pet Lexi sits pretty well but she never wasn’t to sit next to me. I use the command move it in. My last girl knew exactly what that meant. Thanks for the bideo
My dog knows how to follow and automatically sits next to me now. However, he just isn't getting doing it only with verbal. I've tried to phase out the hand motion but he's just not getting it. Any tips?
My puppy is a little over 4 months and we’ve started this to help with attention exercises you teach. I was told to practice this separate from other skills which makes sense? When would you start incorporating it with others? Even though we just started it I’ve found it helpful with leash walking and socializing with our cat. Thanks!
Ah what an exciting time for you, Stringman1950! I’m so glad you’re finding our videos so helpful. Feel free to ask questions as the come up. And most importantly, Happy Training! ~Ken
Hello Ken, as always a fantastic tutorial. I wonder can you clear something up, when Beeline was by your side you gave her treats straight from the pouch. On earlier tutorials we were told to deliver the treat from below our face to maintain eye contact with our dogs. Was this an oversight on your part or intentional???
This is very helpful! I have a 17 week old Golden Retriever puppy and I'm going to start teaching him "Get In" today. He's so smart and has been learning things so quickly!
This isn't working at all with my year old Lab. She always wants to sit further away facing me. Repositioning her in the way you suggest just frustrates her.
Hi there, Janet! We do this same exercise with dogs of all shapes and sizes. From Great Danes to Chihuahua’s. With a tiny breed dog your lure may need to be a little more deliberate (slower to encourage follow) and your replacement will be exactly the same if your puppy gets up. Your challenge is to ensure that your puppy is in a sitting position when they get a reward. Be sure to not accidentally reward them when they are in a standing position. This can be a little harder to see with those little legs😉 By being consistent and clear that remaining in position is the only way to get a reward, your pup will start to put things together pretty quickly! Thanks for watching ~Ken
@@McCannDogs I find I have to be extra sure all 4 paws are down before I yes and reward. I have an 8 lb cavapoo puppy so I have to bend more and just pay extra attention to her feet.
I have a pretty smart poodle. Is 12 weeks too young to start this skill? She’s got sit/down/high five/paw/name recall very well and working on out in complex situations - she does it for toy play, working on leave it, off, spin, crawl, in my hand for fetch and wanting to work towards wait - stay - leash skills.
Need specific help please. Rescued a Walker Coonhound. Day 2. Discovered she’s never been in a house! I’m trying to teach “sit” and nothing is working. I’ve owned Bassets and Labs in the past but this 2 yr old girl is very strong! The length of her and the pushing down on her hind-end while lifting her leash is getting me no where. It seems that she is just confused by it all.
How do u get ur dog to focus on u all the time. I see in all your videos they just have their eyes fixed on u while my 3 mnth golden retriever dosent do tht
Hi from South Africa, I have recently adopted a rescue Toy Poodle whom I adore. He is totally my dog in every area except when we are sitting on the sofa he will go and sit next to my husband, our cats do the same thing. How do I get him to lie next to me. I got him as a companion dog as I have a chronic condition which limits me in terms of getting out for hours on end. Please any advice will be welcome. Thank you 🙂
Hey there Chris Kate and Gracie here from Sydney Australia Love all your lessons. They are helping us heaps. B line and gracie must be related. They look so similar .
Hey TwoBuckChuck! They are he exact same behavior and they can both be used. The word is less important than consistency. So choose the command that you want to use and stick with it! Heel, Let’s Go or whatever word you want to use will work! This command will get your dog into that heel, or Let's go position so you can begin to walk. Thanks for watching! ~Ken
Hi there, Heidi! You can start teaching this to your puppy at around 4 months. This skill will be especially helpful to stop jumping up on people which starts to become a lot less cute as you approach 16 weeks old😉 Happy Training! ~Ken
