I do this for a living and it is super rewarding when you get the person up and linking turns or just even stopping sometimes. Snowboarding has that super steep learning curve. I always will suggest getting a lesson to any first timers for a bunch of reason but he killed it.
MotoMo learning is a tall order in itself. But if you can’t stand up, you’re going to get too frustrated to want to even continue. You shouldn’t only be learning on your heel edge starting out anyways.
Logan Trischett agreed but heel edge is usually the easiest/most comfortable to learn on first because you can see where youre going. Get good at one edge first (stopping, side slipping, S turns) once that is down switch to opposite edge. dont wanna throw too much at them all at once. 😊
I always teach people to stand up from their knees on their toe edge first , then teach them the falling leaf pattern for magic carpet runs.. heel to toe side turn always takes the beginner for a loop LOL but i try to explain that they cannot rush whipping the board around to make a turn like she was doing. the speed freaks them out but its ok. i tell em make the turns as big as you want and then progress to making tighter and faster turns! great video though man i love your attitude about everything just super mellow! keep it up
+Squiggs18 dude thanks for the extra tips and great advice!!! I will totally try the knee thing next time I teach someone. Thanks for watching and enjoying 🙏🏼
You are so patient, love that. I’m 43 and have newly found passion in learning how to snowboard… I love watching all your beginner videos. I hope you keep making more!!!!!
Awesome! Bro you're really a great teacher, and now with your train the trainer vid here, I will be able to let my friends watch this first and then teach them the steps and help them through their progression, for those who are on a serious budget, instead of first sending them to super expensive Ski & Ride School. Thanks for the awesome tips! You've just saved a ton of people a lot of money!
I can still imagine me went up a chairlift when for the first time and spent two hours trying to go down an easy green and not crash into anybody. If I have u for the first day I wouldn't be so miserable lol
Thank you for this video!! Seeing someone actually learning really helped me to set the standards for the other person's pace. It's been a while since i've taught so thank you!
This is a great video... thank you so much for putting this out there! I’m about to try to teach someone I just started seeing how to snowboard for their first time ever and I’ve been having anxiety about it all week!
About halfway in so far and just a bit of constructive criticism: I noticed it may be more helpful to describe the motion needed to achieve something versus saying go on your heels (e.g. bend your knees and lift your toes). I'll have to be mindful of this when I help my friends as well. Keep it up! Always good to spread the love of snowboarding.
This is all so true. Idk why the average person thinks it's best to just bring their friends, girlfriend, etc straight to the top and then ditch them right at the top. They almost never figure it out on their own and if they do, it's not going to happen that first day. People are such bad and impatient teachers. My first experience was like this and so was literally everyone else I know who I've spoken to about this. People suck at teaching! Learn how to push around, get up, and then how to stop on both edges. Once you can do that to any level, you can go to the top where the gravity and slope actually help you alot. Then just take your time building muscle memory by stopping on both edges until it all naturally becomes easier, faster, etc. If you're new to boarding or skiing and your friends say, follow us to the top, you'll get it. Dont. Go to the bunny hill or first slope and work on those basic foundational skills. Don't trust your friends unless your friend is telling you to do the basic things first.
I know this video is older, but you have great patience and awesome demeanor. The first time I rode, he took me up the chairlift immediately after one skate and it was so scary coming down because although it was a bunny bill, first time looking down is like looking down a double black.... So scary. You're awesome tho! PS... Does she still have that jacket? I love it!😻 Ask her where she got it or what brand! 😻😻😻
Lynda Renee thanks! I know the feeling of a bunny hill looking like a black lol idk if you saw my recent how to S turn video but maybe that can help you the next time you go out. And the jacket is a volcum jacket but I know it’s like 5 years old so idk if you can still find it :/
"alot of people want to kick like a skateboard, but you can't" - what? i've been snowboarding for a long time and i always kick like a skateboard, it goes so much faster.
my wife first time on the chairlift she held on too long. So long that it started to turn around to go back down the mountain and she was still holding it. She let go and went over this rail and off this mini cliff thing (not that dangerous). It was freaking hilarious.
I taught my buddy a little last year I referenced toeside turns are like reaching for the cookie jar on the top of the fridge and heelside turns is sit in the chair 😂 worked pretty well 🙌🏻 so sick even a year later could watch this video 100 times over!! You should be an instructor buckhouse be a good coach!! 🤙🏻
On my third day so far, toe side is definitely the way to start and of couse conditions vary but the netting, people and other obstructions all feel like imminent collisions. All in all great job getting up the lift on day one. BTW watched the 1000th video clicked for shred but got what I needed instead thanka bro!
Remember when there were no magic carpets and you had to learn on tow ropes? Eeeks that was a nightmare. And I had 10 years on skis before I moved to boarding.
I went once when I was younger and gave up cause I wasn’t that good but then I got into surfing like 4 or 5 years ago and I tried snowboarding again a week ago and learned it more quickly than most people would
For anyone teaching please start by having them side slip on their toe and heel edge for like 4 runs. She took a long time to get comfortable stopping because She didn’t understand how to control herself on her heel edge
IF you had her roll over onto her knees she could have gotten up easier.. a good way to help gain balance is slide on your toe or heel edge centering weight evenly over the board and sliding down the slope. .
Did you start her out heeling down the hill? I feel like the best one size-fits-all approach (after one foot skating on flat ground) would be 1. Heel all the way down 2. Toe down 3. Leaf down on Heel 4. Leaf down on toe 5. THEN j turns The benefit of heeling down first is that when you get up from sitting, you can go straight to heeling without trying to balance in one spot!
haha I taught my ex how to snowboard...we don't talk anymore. Last year I did teach this girl I was dating but my boss told me to do it on the clock and not tell anyone else in the lesson...it went much better.
+Adam Haduck yes!!!! Please do. I hope it turns out great. I also posted a how to S turn video two days ago. Watch that video and it will help too. Have fun guys!!!
I don't know of any instructiors that would take a beginner to the top of the mountain and say "follow me, you'll figure it out" - All of the instructors I know start everyone on the bunny hill.
I went Snowboarding once and my instructor Really sucked he the took us Straight up the chair lift and when I tried to Ride Off I Went Straight to the Ground And My friend rode over my hands. I came home from that trip with a spraind wrist and knee. I really enjoyed the Snowboarding tho and I am Saving to go On a Snowboarding trip with my family
Rented one of those Burton LTRs on my last trip at the beginning of this month, not knowing is was one of the lower end models. Took it down some steep icy runs, very sketchy. Just bought a lib tech JLP Dagmar, excited to feel the difference.
Exactly how i learned to snowboard. Never had a formal lesson from an instructor or friends just watched a ton of how to videos and applied it on the mountain.
@@JohnathanBuckhouse that’s ok no hate love your videos regardless it was just aggravating watching like I was yelling at the phone cause you taught me how to snowboard and I learned based of what you said you know and I was like why aren’t you telling her😂 but I went for my first time last weekend to Bluewood in Dayton Washington surfed my whole life but I got my s turns done first hour and was shredding black diamond runs it’s better then surfing I have to say it magical on that board
