@@SimplyMadeHomestead I bought six quails and they are now 10 weeks old. I also bought 30 eggs. This morning could see a little hole in a celadon egg. At the end of this morning a checked and the machine 'died' . I was so so sad. I openened real carefull one egg and there was a perfect little bird in it. I know, never open an egg. But in this case? Now we put the eggs in a box with a heatinglight above, temp is just belowe 38 degrees celcius. I wet them with a plantenspuit. No idea what the english word for that is. I am really not hopefull, but want to give this a day extra to try. And the little bird from last evening didn't dry up nice. There was a little bit that was hard and stuck on it. I put it in a bath this morning and yes: he/she liked it. I have dried it very well and put it in the brooder with his little friends. After about an our it started to move, eat and drink. O, after bath and drying i gave it a few drops of luke warm water with a tiny bit of vitamins. I do care for my animals, but it would be nice if the incubator would work with me and not against me. It;s a learning process , isn't it ?! Next step: shall i give myself a new incubator and if so, wich one? Or shall i only buy quails ? Or....shall i try a serama hen to brood on the eggs? I do not now yet, first things first.....coffee that is.

@@SimplyMadeHomestead Hi there, i could not see a product with the first link. The second, i have seen these ports before. Looks nice! I made a feeder from an empty jar, made 4 holes in it, 6 cm above the floor. Then made 4 circels of 4 cm diameter and 2 cm wide. I glued them in the holes. Put in some pellets, placed it in the cage, took a chair and sat down to see what happened. They finally got it en put their head into a hole....grapped a pellet ....took it out en throw it around. They seemed to enjoy it, i didn't! so now what....shall i grind up the pellets ??

Hi there, just starting up with quails again. I really want to know more about flooring. I would like to have a floor that is comfortable on there feet and were the droppings fall through. Now , i have seen different kinds of floors. Rabbit-floor, a black thick floor with spacings. Looks sturdy but the spacing is 2 x 6,5 cm, That wil not work i guess. Then i saw floors with spacings from 1.5 x 3 cm. And one with 1.6 x 1.6 cm and 2.2 x 2.2 cm. All made from a plastic, can't really tell if the bars are rounded or not. I do want to have the rounded bars. Also, you can cut them up with siccors (or saw) to your size needed. What do i look for when i am buying this ?? I have some rabbit cages with drawers, in the drawers i want to put some pineshavings (is that how you call it?) But the quail must be on a wired floor.....but what ??
@SimplyMadeHomestead
@SimplyMadeHomestead Год назад
Building our quail cage was our very first video and IF you're raising your quail for meat, meaning they will only be around for about 8 to 12 weeks, the regular 1/4" hardware cloth is fine. BUT, if you are keeping your quail for longer then that or using them for the eggs only, meaning they could live on the wire for 18 to 24 months, I would recommend the coated 1/4" hardware cloth, much easier on their feet. I have noticed that raising quail on the regular wire for a longer periods of time, will produce swollen pads on their feet that have to be soaked and cared for. You could also make a section of the floor with plywood to give them an area off the wire. But if you do that you will have to clean it more often than dumping trays that catch the debris that has fallen through the hardware cloth. If you use the plywood section, cover it with a piece of linoleum flooring and then shavings or straw. I did that in our previous hen house and it really made the clean up super easy. Here are a couple of links that help you in your endeavor. I hope this helps and I'd love to hear what you decide. Hi there, can you tell me from what age you can tell i the quail is male or female?
@SimplyMadeHomestead
@SimplyMadeHomestead 2 года назад
The feather sexable you’ll be able to tell at about 3 to 4 weeks. But as for the non-feather sexable, it could be more towards 6 to 8 weeks. It does get easier with practice though. You’ll begin feeling more and more confident with what you actually looking at, male or female. But I do highly recommend keeping a really good eye out on them until you know for sure. If a female is left in a cage with a bunch of males she’ll be overbred and you’d have to cull her. Watch for eggs. If an egg appears in the male pen, then it’s time to give them all another look. Hope that helps and thank you so much for watching! If you haven’t already, subscribe, we’d love to have you along.

@SimplyMadeHomestead
@SimplyMadeHomestead 5 месяцев назад
It will become more obvious over the next week. And if you gently mash on the little poochy part and white stuff comes out, that’s a male. Rewatch the video and keep looking. Even after doing it for awhile I’d miss a female and suddenly have an egg in the pen. That would totally freak me out and my husband and I both would be on a major hunt until we found her. Even then sometimes another female might turn up. Don’t be hard on yourself but keep a close check on them. You’ll be fine.

Goodmorning everyone. My quails did very well, but overnight something happened. I have one white quail, three dark ones and two light brown. The white one had blood all over and his/her head had get pecked 'till it was open. We have now treated that , took the white quail out and put it in another cage. Yep, they just do that and i don't like that. However, ik wanted to ask something and maybe you or someone else here could give comments, tips, tricks? I have read that colored light (red?) would work against this pecking (hope it is the right word for this behaviour) What to do when this happens? pleas let me now, i am here to learn after all. Kind regards, Paula

I’m so sorry that happened to one of your little ones. I’ve heard that too much can create one to be territorial. You really need to find the bully and pull that one. I’ve had bully’s and it awful what they do to another bird. They’ll blind them and completely tear the top of their head up. So this is my advice: 1. Keep the injured isolated and spray its head with Vetericyn 2 to 3 times a day (or something equivalent). 2. Find the bully and isolate him or her. I would find it another home or send to freezer camp. 3. One the injured bird is healed, re integrate to the pen with the others at night when everyone is settled. They’ll wake up together and hopefully everyone will get along. Sometimes the bully can be more than one and they just didn’t like that particular bird for whatever reason. So you’ll just have to see how it goes. If everyone gets along while the injured is healing, you may have to find it a new home or acquire some more quail for the injured to live with. I know that’s a lot but I hope it helps. I’m here if you need me. Best of luck!

Hi there, thanks !! He, or she, is doing it bit better. eating and drinking and in company of another. We have treated it with a spray, but i really don't know how it's called in English. Vetericyn, i looked it up and it is availeble in Holland. Yeeeh. I am going to buy this. Just need to read a bit more about this product because there are several products. The bully seems to be one of the light quails.But not sure about that. Did you mean that too much light could cause this pecking? Or did i not understand correctly? They are indoors and there is really not a lot of light, also not a lot of daylight here this time of year. The chickens need a certain amount of daylight to keep laying eggs. I suppose it's the same for quail? Maybe , i thought, it is there age? They were born on november 26th. They haven't laid an egg yet.
@SimplyMadeHomestead
@SimplyMadeHomestead Год назад
I really don’t think the amount of light would make them be aggressive. Some of them just get that way sometimes. And yes, they need a certain amount of light to lay but I figure they need a break. Glad to hear the little one is doing better.
